He placedוַיִּתֶּןa forceחַיִלin allבְּכָלthe fortifiedהַבְּצֻרוֹתcitiesעָרֵיof Judah,יְהוּדָהand setוַיִּתֵּןgarrisonsנְצִיבִיםin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Judahיְהוּדָהand in the citiesוּבְעָרֵיof EphraimאֶפְרַיִםthatאֲשֶׁרAsaאָסָאhis fatherאָבִיוhad captured.לָכַד
YHWHיְהוָהwasוַיְהִיwithעִםJehoshaphat,יְהוֹשָׁפָטbecauseכִּיhe walkedהָלַךְin the firstבְּ הָרִאשֹׁנִיםwaysדַרְכֵיof Davidדָּוִידhis father,אָבִיוand did notוְלֹאseekדָרַשׁthe Baals,לַבְּעָלִים
butכִּיthe Elohimלֵאלֹהֵיof his fatherאָבִיוhe sought,דָּרָשׁand in his commandmentsוּבְמִצְוֺתָיוhe walked,הָלָךְand notוְלֹאaccording to the doingsכְּמַעֲשֵׂהof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
YHWHיְהוָהestablishedוַיָּכֶןthe kingdomהַמַּמְלָכָהin his hand,בְּיָדוֹand allוַ כָלJudahיְהוּדָהgaveיִּתְּנוּtributeמִנְחָהto Jehoshaphat;לִיהוֹשָׁפָטand he hadוַיְהִי לוֹrichesעֹשֶׁרand gloryוְכָבוֹדin abundance.לָרֹב
His heartלִבּוֹwas exaltedוַיִּגְבַּהּin the waysבְּדַרְכֵיof YHWH;יְהוָהand moreoverוְעוֹדhe removedהֵסִירthe high placesהַבָּמוֹתandוְthe Asherahsהָאֲשֵׁרִיםfrom Judah.מִיהוּדָה
In the thirdשָׁלוֹשׁyearוּבִשְׁנַתof his reignלְמָלְכוֹhe sentשָׁלַחhis officials,לְשָׂרָיוBen-hail,לְבֶן חַיִלObadiah,וּלְעֹבַדְיָהZechariah,וְלִזְכַרְיָהNethanel,וְלִנְתַנְאֵלand Micaiah,וּלְמִיכָיָהוּto teachלְלַמֵּדin the citiesבְּעָרֵיof Judah;יְהוּדָה
and with themוְעִמָּהֶםthe LevitesהַלְוִיִּםShemaiah,שְׁמַעְיָהוּNethaniah,וּנְתַנְיָהוּZebadiah,וּזְבַדְיָהוּAsahel,וַעֲשָׂהאֵלShemiramoth,וּשְׁמִירָמוֹתJonathan,וִיהוֹנָתָןAdonijah,וַאֲדֹנִיָּהוּTobijah,וְטוֹבִיָּהוּand Tob-adonijah,וְטוֹב אֲדוֹנִיָּהthe Levites;הַלְוִיִּםand with themוְעִמָּהֶםElishamaאֱלִישָׁמָעand Joram,וִיהוֹרָםthe priests.הַכֹּהֲנִים
They taughtוַיְלַמְּדוּin Judah,בִּיהוּדָהand with themוְעִמָּהֶםwas the bookסֵפֶרof the lawתּוֹרַתof YHWH;יְהוָהthey went aroundוַיָּסֹבּוּthrough allבְּכָלthe citiesעָרֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהand taughtוַיְלַמְּדוּamong the people.בָּעָם
The dreadפַּחַדof YHWHיְהוָהwasוַיְהִיonעַלallכָּלthe kingdomsמַמְלְכוֹתof the landsהָאֲרָצוֹתthatאֲשֶׁרwere aroundסְבִיבוֹתJudah,יְהוּדָהand they did notוְלֹאfightנִלְחֲמוּagainstעִםJehoshaphat.יְהוֹשָׁפָט
Fromוּמִןthe Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּיםsome were bringingמְבִיאִיםto Jehoshaphatלִיהוֹשָׁפָטtributeמִנְחָהand silverוְכֶסֶףas a load;מַשָּׂאalsoגַּםthe Arabsהָעַרְבִיאִיםwere bringingמְבִיאִיםhimלוֹsheep and goats:צֹאןrams,אֵילִיםsevenשִׁבְעַתthousandאֲלָפִיםand sevenוּשְׁבַעhundred,מֵאוֹתand male goats,וּתְיָשִׁיםsevenשִׁבְעַתthousandאֲלָפִיםand sevenוּשְׁבַעhundred.מֵאוֹת
Jehoshaphatיְהוֹשָׁפָטkept growingוַיְהִי הֹלֵךְ וְגָדֵלgreater and greater,עַד לְמָעְלָהand he builtוַיִּבֶןin Judahבִּיהוּדָהcitadelsבִּירָנִיּוֹתand store cities.וְעָרֵי מִסְכְּנוֹת
Muchרַבָּהworkוּמְלָאכָהhe hadהָיָה לוֹin the citiesבְּעָרֵיof Judah,יְהוּדָהand menוְאַנְשֵׁיof war,מִלְחָמָהmighty menגִּבּוֹרֵיof valor,חַיִלin Jerusalem.בִּירוּשָׁלִָם
And thisוְאֵלֶּהis their countפְקֻדָּתָםby their fathers’ houses:לְבֵית אֲבוֹתֵיהֶםof Judah,לִיהוּדָהcommandersשָׂרֵיof thousands:אֲלָפִיםAdnahעַדְנָהthe commander,הַשָּׂרand with himוְעִמּוֹmighty menגִּבּוֹרֵיof valor,חַיִלthreeשְׁלֹשׁhundredמֵאוֹתthousand;אָלֶף
and next to himוְעַל יָדוֹJehohananיְהוֹחָנָןthe commander,הַשָּׂרand with himוְעִמּוֹtwo hundredמָאתַיִםand eightyוּשְׁמוֹנִיםthousand;אָלֶף
and next to himוְעַל יָדוֹAmasiahעֲמַסְיָהsonבֶןof Zichri,זִכְרִיwho had offered himself willinglyהַמִּתְנַדֵּבto YHWH,לַיהוָהand with himוְעִמּוֹtwo hundredמָאתַיִםthousandאֶלֶףmighty menגִּבּוֹרof valor.חָיִל
And fromוּמִןBenjamin:בִּנְיָמִןEliada,אֶלְיָדָעa mighty manגִּבּוֹרof valor,חַיִלand with himוְעִמּוֹthose armedנֹשְׁקֵיwith bowקֶשֶׁתand shield,וּמָגֵןtwo hundredמָאתַיִםthousand;אָלֶף
and next to himוְעַל יָדוֹJehozabad,יְהוֹזָבָדand with himוְעִמּוֹa hundredמֵאָהand eightyוּשְׁמוֹנִיםthousandאֶלֶףequippedחֲלוּצֵיfor the army.צָבָא
Theseאֵלֶּהwere the ones ministeringהַמְשָׁרְתִיםto the king,הַמֶּלֶךְbesidesמִלְּבַדthose whomאֲשֶׁרthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְhad placedנָתַןin the fortifiedהַמִּבְצָרcitiesבְּעָרֵיthroughout allבְּכָלJudah.יְהוּדָה
