Adonai, Lord

"Adonai": "my Lord", said only to God. It is a title of respect that acknowledges his authority. It is not another god besides YHWH: often it goes with his name, "Adonai YHWH", Lord YHWH.

Where else “adona” appears
YHWHיְהוִהyehvi

YHWH (with Adonai)

The four letters of God's name, YHWH (see "YHWH"). They almost always go with "Adonai"; then Jews, when reading, said "Elohim" so as not to repeat "Adonai".

the mannerתּוֹרַתtorat

Manner, custom, way of acting. It is a form of the word "instruction" (torah) and appears only once with this sense (2 Samuel 7:19); so its translation is not certain.

human being

All humankind, men and women, as creatures God formed.

Where else “adam” appears

Translation note

The last phrase is brief and difficult in Hebrew: “and this is the manner of humankind.” The word is the same as “instruction” (torah); the lexicon understands it here as “manner, custom.” It may be an exclamation of amazement (“so you treat a man!”) or it may say that this promise is a teaching for humanity. It is translated word for word.

2 Samuel 7:18-29

18Then King David went in and sat before YHWH and said, “Who am I, Adonai YHWH, and who is my house, that you have brought me this far? 19And this was still small in your eyes, Adonai YHWH; and you have spoken also of the house of your servant for a long time to come; and this is the manner of humankind, Adonai YHWH! 20And what can David add further to say to you? You know your servant, Adonai YHWH. 21For the sake of your word and according to your heart you have done all this greatness, to make it known to your servant. 22Therefore you are great, Adonai YHWH; for there is none like you, and there is no Elohim besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 23And who is like your people, like Israel, one nation on the earth, whom Elohim went to rescue for himself as a people, and to make for himself a name, and to do for you the greatness and awesome things for your land, before your people, whom you rescued for yourself from Egypt, from nations and its gods? 24You made firm for yourself your people Israel to be your people forever; and you, YHWH, have become their Elohim. 25And now, YHWH Elohim, the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, confirm it forever, and do as you have spoken. 26And may your name be great forever, so that it is said, ‘YHWH Tsevaot is Elohim over Israel’; and may the house of your servant David be established before you. 27For you, YHWH Tsevaot, Elohim of Israel, have made this known to your servant, saying, ‘A house I will build for you’; therefore your servant has found his heart to pray to you this prayer. 28And now, Adonai YHWH, you are Elohim, and your words are truth, and you have spoken to your servant this good thing. 29And now, be pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may be forever before you; for you, Adonai YHWH, have spoken, and with your blessing let the house of your servant be blessed forever.”

1 Chronicles 17:16-27

16Then King David went in and sat before YHWH and said, “Who am I, YHWH Elohim, and who is my house, that you have brought me this far? 17And this was small in your eyes, Elohim; and you have spoken of the house of your servant for a long time to come; and you have regarded me according to the rank of a man of high degree, YHWH Elohim. 18What more can David add to you for the honor of your servant? You know your servant. 19YHWH, for the sake of your servant and according to your heart you have done all this greatness, to make known all the great things. 20YHWH, there is none like you, and there is no Elohim besides you, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 21And who is like your people Israel, one nation on the earth, whom Elohim went to rescue for himself as a people, to make for yourself a name of great things and awesome things, by driving out nations from before your people whom you rescued from Egypt? 22You made your people Israel to be your people forever; and you, YHWH, have become their Elohim. 23And now, YHWH, the word that you have spoken concerning your servant and concerning his house, let it stand firm forever, and do as you have spoken. 24Let it stand firm, and let your name be great forever, so that it is said, ‘YHWH Tsevaot, the Elohim of Israel, is Elohim for Israel’; and may the house of David your servant be established before you. 25For you, my Elohim, have made it known to your servant that you will build him a house; therefore your servant has found courage to pray before you. 26And now, YHWH, you are Elohim, and you have spoken concerning your servant this good thing. 27And now, you have been pleased to bless the house of your servant, that it may be forever before you; for you, YHWH, have blessed, and it will be blessed forever.”
