1Babylon
Today: Babylon ruins, near Hillah, Iraq
A great city on the Euphrates River, in present-day Iraq, about 53 miles (85 km) south of Baghdad.
In its land the languages were confused at Babel (Gen 11:9). Nebuchadnezzar destroyed Jerusalem and took the people captive there (2 Kgs 25:1-11). Daniel lived there (Dan 1:1-6).
2Zion
Today: Mount Zion hill, Jerusalem
A hill in Jerusalem; it first named the fortress David captured, and later sometimes the whole city.
David captured the stronghold of Zion and called it the city of David (2 Sam 5:7). The Psalms and prophets call it the place where God lives among his people (Ps 48:2).
The context
27Slay all her bulls; let them go down to the slaughter! Woe to them, for their day has come, the time of their punishment.
28 · This verse (above)
29Summon against Babylon archers, all who bend the bow; encamp against her all around; let there be no escape for her. Repay her according to her deeds; according to all that she has done, do to her; for against YHWH she has acted insolently, against the Holy One of Israel.
