Translation note
The hyrax (BDB: “hyrax syriacus”) is a small animal of the rocks, resembling a rabbit. Neither it nor the hare chews the cud as a cow does, though they move their mouths as if they did; it can be understood that the text describes what is seen.
The context
4But these you shall not eat, among those that chew the cud or among those that divide the hoof: the camel, for it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof; it shall be unclean for you.
5 · This verse (above)
6And the hare, for it chews the cud but does not divide the hoof; it shall be unclean for you.
