Edom
Today: southern Jordan and the southern Negev
A mountain region south of the Dead Sea, in what is now southwest Jordan.
The Edomites came from Esau, Jacob's brother (Gen 36:1). Edom would not let Israel pass through its land (Num 20:14-21).
The context
17Please let us pass through your land. We will not pass through field or through vineyard, and we will not drink water from a well. We will go along the way of the king; we will not turn aside to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.”
18 · This verse (above)
19And the sons of Israel said to him, “We will go up by the highway, and if we drink your water, I and my livestock, then I will pay its price. Only it is nothing: let me pass through on foot.”
