And the sonsוַ בְנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלthe wholeכָּלcommunity,הָעֵדָהcameיָּבֹאוּinto the wildernessמִדְבַּרof Zinצִןin the firstבַּ הָרִאשׁוֹןmonth,חֹדֶשׁand the peopleוַ הָעָםstayedיֵּשֶׁבin Kadesh;בְּקָדֵשׁand Miriamוַ מִרְיָםdiedתָּמָתthereשָׁםand was buriedוַתִּקָּבֵרthere.שָׁם
Andוְthere wasהָיָהnoלֹאwaterמַיִםfor the community;לָעֵדָהand they assembledוַיִּקָּהֲלוּagainstעַלMosesמֹשֶׁהandוְagainstעַלAaron.אַהֲרֹן
And the peopleוַ הָעָםquarreledיָּרֶבwithעִםMosesמֹשֶׁהand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ לֵאמֹר“If onlyוְלוּwe had expiredגָוַעְנוּwhen our brothersבִּ אַחֵינוּexpiredגְוַעbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH!יְהוָה
And whyוְלָמָהhave you broughtהֲבֵאתֶםthe assemblyאֶת קְהַלof YHWHיְהוָהintoאֶלthisהַזֶּהwilderness,הַמִּדְבָּרto dieלָמוּתthere,שָׁםweאֲנַחְנוּand our livestock?וּבְעִירֵנוּ
And whyוְלָמָהhave you brought us upהֶעֱלִיתֻנוּfrom Egypt,מִמִּצְרַיִםto bringלְהָבִיאusאֹתָנוּtoאֶלthisהַזֶּהevilהָרָעplace?הַמָּקוֹםIt is notלֹאa placeמְקוֹםof grainזֶרַעor figsוּתְאֵנָהorוְvinesגֶפֶןorוְpomegranates,רִמּוֹןandוּthere is noאַיִןwaterמַיִםto drink.”לִשְׁתּוֹת
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהandוְAaronאַהֲרֹןwentיָּבֹאfromמִthe presenceפְּנֵיof the assemblyהַקָּהָלtoאֶלthe entranceפֶּתַחof the tentאֹהֶלof meetingמוֹעֵדand fellוַיִּפְּלוּonעַלtheir faces;פְּנֵיהֶםand the gloryוַ כְבוֹדof YHWHיְהוָהappearedיֵּרָאto them.אֲלֵיהֶם
YHWHיְהוָהspokeוַיְדַבֵּרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁהsaying,לֵּאמֹר
“Takeקַחthe staff,אֶת הַמַּטֶּהand assembleוְהַקְהֵלthe community,אֶת הָעֵדָהyouאַתָּהandוְAaronאַהֲרֹןyour brother,אָחִיךָand speakוְדִבַּרְתֶּםtoאֶלthe cragהַסֶּלַעbefore their eyesלְעֵינֵיהֶםso that it will giveוְנָתַןits water.מֵימָיוAnd you shall bring outוְהוֹצֵאתָwaterמַיִםfor themלָהֶםfromמִןthe cragהַסֶּלַעand give drinkוְהִשְׁקִיתָto the communityאֶת הָעֵדָהandוְto their livestock.”אֶת בְּעִירָם
So Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהtookיִּקַּחthe staffאֶת הַמַּטֶּהfromמִלִּbeforeפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהasכַּאֲשֶׁרhe had commanded him.צִוָּהוּ
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהandוְAaronאַהֲרֹןassembledיַּקְהִלוּthe assemblyאֶת הַקָּהָלinאֶלfrontפְּנֵיof the crag,הַסָּלַעand he saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,לָהֶם“Hear,שִׁמְעוּplease,נָאyou rebels!הַמֹּרִיםShall we bring outהֲ נוֹצִיאwaterמָיִםfor youלָכֶםfromמִןthisהַזֶּהcrag?”הַסֶּלַע
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהraisedיָּרֶםhis handאֶת יָדוֹand struckוַיַּךְthe cragאֶת הַסֶּלַעwith his staffבְּמַטֵּהוּtwice,פַּעֲמָיִםand muchרַבִּיםwaterמַיִםcame out,וַיֵּצְאוּand the communityוַ הָעֵדָהand their livestockוּבְעִירָםdrank.תֵּשְׁתְּ
And YHWHוַ יְהוָהsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלMosesמֹשֶׁהandוְtoאֶלAaron,אַהֲרֹן“Becauseיַעַןyou did notלֹאbelieveהֶאֱמַנְתֶּםin me,בִּיto treat me as holyלְהַקְדִּישֵׁנִיin the eyesלְעֵינֵיof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלthereforeלָכֵןyou shall notלֹאbringתָבִיאוּthisהַזֶּהassemblyאֶת הַקָּהָלintoאֶלthe landהָאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרI have givenנָתַתִּיthem.”לָהֶם
Theseהֵמָּהare the watersמֵיof Meribah,מְרִיבָהwhereאֲשֶׁרthe sonsבְנֵיof IsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלquarreledרָבוּwithאֶתYHWH,יְהוָהand he showed himself holyוַיִּקָּדֵשׁamong them.בָּם
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהsentיִּשְׁלַחmessengersמַלְאָכִיםfrom Kadeshמִקָּדֵשׁtoאֶלthe kingמֶלֶךְof Edom:אֱדוֹם“Thusכֹּהsaysאָמַרyour brotherאָחִיךָIsrael:יִשְׂרָאֵלYouאַתָּהknowיָדַעְתָּallאֵת כָּלthe hardshipהַתְּלָאָהthatאֲשֶׁרhas found us:מְצָאָתְנוּ
our fathersאֲבֹתֵינוּwent downוַיֵּרְדוּto Egypt,מִצְרַיְמָהand we livedוַנֵּשֶׁבin Egyptבְּמִצְרַיִםmanyרַבִּיםdays,יָמִיםand the Egyptiansוַ מִצְרַיִםdealt badlyיָּרֵעוּwith usלָנוּandוְwith our fathers.לַאֲבֹתֵינוּ
And we cried outוַנִּצְעַקtoאֶלYHWH,יְהוָהand he heardוַיִּשְׁמַעour voiceקֹלֵנוּand sentוַיִּשְׁלַחan angelמַלְאָךְand brought us outוַיֹּצִאֵנוּof Egypt.מִמִּצְרָיִםAndוְlook,הִנֵּהweאֲנַחְנוּare in Kadesh,בְקָדֵשׁa cityעִירat the edgeקְצֵהof your territory.גְבוּלֶךָ
Pleaseנָּאlet us passנַעְבְּרָהthrough your land.בְאַרְצֶךָWe will notלֹאpassנַעֲבֹרthrough fieldבְּשָׂדֶהorוּthrough vineyard,בְכֶרֶםandוְwe will notלֹאdrinkנִשְׁתֶּהwaterמֵיfrom a well.בְאֵרWe will goנֵלֵךְalong the wayדֶּרֶךְof the king;הַמֶּלֶךְwe will notלֹאturn asideנִטֶּהto the rightיָמִיןorוּto the leftשְׂמֹאולuntilעַד אֲשֶׁרwe have passed throughנַעֲבֹרyour territory.”גְּבוּלֶךָ
But Edomוַ אֱדוֹםsaidיֹּאמֶרto him,אֵלָיו“You shall notלֹאpassתַעֲבֹרthrough me,בִּיlestפֶּןI come outאֵצֵאwith the swordבַּחֶרֶבagainst you.”לִקְרָאתֶךָ
And the sonsוַ בְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלsaidיֹּאמְרוּto him,אֵלָיו“We will go upנַעֲלֶהby the highway,בַּמְסִלָּהandוְifאִםwe drinkנִשְׁתֶּהyour water,מֵימֶיךָIאֲנִיand my livestock,וּמִקְנַיthen I will payוְנָתַתִּיits price.מִכְרָםOnlyרַקit is nothing:אֵין דָּבָרlet me pass throughאֶעֱבֹרָהon foot.”בְּרַגְלַי
But he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“You shall notלֹאpass through.”תַעֲבֹרAnd Edomוַ אֱדוֹםcame outיֵּצֵאagainst himלִקְרָאתוֹwith a heavyכָּבֵדforceבְּעַםandוּwith a strongחֲזָקָהhand.בְיָד
Thus Edomוַ אֱדוֹםrefusedיְמָאֵןto letנְתֹןIsraelאֶת יִשְׂרָאֵלpassעֲבֹרthrough his territory;בִּגְבֻלוֹso Israelוַ יִשְׂרָאֵלturned awayיֵּטfrom him.מֵעָלָיו
And they set outוַיִּסְעוּfrom Kadesh,מִקָּדֵשׁand the sonsוַ בְנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלthe wholeכָּלcommunity,הָעֵדָהcameיָּבֹאוּto Horהֹרthe mountain.הָהָר
And YHWHוַ יְהוָהsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלMosesמֹשֶׁהandוְtoאֶלAaronאַהֲרֹןat Horבְּהֹרthe mountain,הָהָרonעַלthe borderגְּבוּלof the landאֶרֶץof Edom,אֱדוֹםsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Aaronאַהֲרֹןshall be gatheredיֵאָסֵףtoאֶלhis people;עַמָּיוforכִּיhe shall notלֹאenterיָבֹאthe landאֶל הָאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרI have givenנָתַתִּיto the sonsלִבְנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלbecauseעַל אֲשֶׁרyou rebelled againstמְרִיתֶםmy commandאֶת פִּיat the watersלְמֵיof Meribah.מְרִיבָה
TakeקַחAaronאֶת אַהֲרֹןandוְEleazarאֶת אֶלְעָזָרhis sonבְּנוֹand bringוְהַעַלthemאֹתָםup Horהֹרthe mountain,הָהָר
and stripוְהַפְשֵׁטAaronאֶת אַהֲרֹןof his garmentsאֶת בְּגָדָיוand put themוְהִלְבַּשְׁתָּםon Eleazarאֶת אֶלְעָזָרhis son;בְּנוֹand Aaronוְאַהֲרֹןshall be gathered to his peopleיֵאָסֵףand dieוּמֵתthere.”שָׁם
So Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהdidיַּעַשׂasכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commanded,צִוָּהand they went upוַיַּעֲלוּHorאֶל הֹרthe mountainהָהָרbefore the eyesלְעֵינֵיof allכָּלthe community.הָעֵדָה
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהstrippedיַּפְשֵׁטAaronאֶת אַהֲרֹןof his garmentsאֶת בְּגָדָיוand put themוַיַּלְבֵּשׁ אֹתָםon Eleazarאֶת אֶלְעָזָרhis son;בְּנוֹand Aaronוַ אַהֲרֹןdiedיָּמָתthereשָׁםon the topבְּרֹאשׁof the mountain.הָהָרThen Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהandוְEleazarאֶלְעָזָרcame downיֵּרֶדfromמִןthe mountain.הָהָר
And allוַ כָּלthe communityהָעֵדָהsawיִּרְאוּthatכִּיAaronאַהֲרֹןhad expired,גָוַעand they weptוַיִּבְכּוּfor Aaronאֶת אַהֲרֹןthirtyשְׁלֹשִׁיםdays,יוֹםallכֹּלthe houseבֵּיתof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
