to YHWHיהוָהyhva

YHWH

The personal name of the God of Israel, written in Hebrew with four letters, Y-H-W-H, without vowels. Out of reverence Jews stopped pronouncing it and read "Adonai" (Lord), so many Bibles put "the LORD" or "Jehovah". This translation keeps the four letters. The name is related to the verb "to be" (Exodus 3:14-15). He is not a god other than Elohim: "YHWH Elohim" is the same Creator God, called by his name.

Translation note

“Nazirite” comes from a Hebrew verb meaning to separate oneself: it is the person who separates himself for God for a time, with three signs (not drinking wine, not cutting the hair, not touching the dead). Samson was one from his mother’s womb (Judges 13:5); of Samuel it is said that no razor would come on his head (1 Samuel 1:11), and of John, that he would not drink wine or strong drink (Luke 1:15). It is not the same as “Nazarene,” one who is from Nazareth.

The context

1And YHWH spoke to Moses, saying,

2 · This verse (above)

3he shall separate himself from wine and intoxicating drink; he shall not drink vinegar of wine or vinegar of intoxicating drink, and he shall not drink any juice of grapes, nor eat grapes, fresh or dried.
