Word study

Curtain: each of the large pieces of cloth or goats’ hair that, joined together, form a tent. That is why ‘my curtains’ amounts to saying ‘my tent’.

Historical and cultural background

Exodus 26 describes two sets of curtains: ten of fine linen in colors with cherubim, which form the dwelling, and eleven of goats’ hair, which make a tent over it (Exodus 26:1, 7). David contrasts his house of cedar with the ark, which “remains inside the curtain” (2 Samuel 7:2).

How we translate it

“Curtains” 30 times and “curtain” 24, almost all in the building of the dwelling (Exodus 26 and 36). This edition’s glossary keeps ‘curtain’ for יְרִיעָה and gives other words to the other hangings of the dwelling: ‘veil’ for פָּרֹכֶת, ‘screen’ for מָסָךְ, ‘hangings’ for קְלָעִים.
