Joashיוֹאָשׁdidוַיַּעַשׂwhat was rightהַיָּשָׁרin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof YHWHיְהוָהallכָּלthe daysיְמֵיof Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָעthe priest.הַכֹּהֵן
Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָעtookוַיִּשָּׂאfor himלוֹtwoשְׁתָּיִםwives,נָשִׁיםand he fatheredוַיּוֹלֶדsonsבָּנִיםand daughters.וּבָנוֹת
And it happenedוַיְהִיafterאַחֲרֵיthisכֵןthat it wasהָיָהinעִםthe heartלֵבof Joashיוֹאָשׁto renewלְחַדֵּשׁthe houseבֵּיתof YHWH.יְהוָה
He gatheredוַיִּקְבֹּץthe priestsהַכֹּהֲנִיםand the Levitesוְהַלְוִיִּםand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,לָהֶם“Go outצְאוּto the citiesלְעָרֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהand gatherוְקִבְצוּfrom allמִכָּלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלsilverכֶּסֶףto repairלְחַזֵּקthe houseבֵּיתof your Elohimאֱלֹהֵיכֶםyearמִדֵּי שָׁנָהby year;בְּשָׁנָהand you,וְאַתֶּםhurryתְּמַהֲרוּin the matter.”לַדָּבָרBut the Levitesוְ הַלְוִיִּםdid notלֹאhurry.מִהֲרוּ
The kingהַמֶּלֶךְcalledוַיִּקְרָאJehoiadaלִיהוֹיָדָעthe headהָרֹאשׁand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“Whyמַדּוּעַhave you notלֹאrequiredדָרַשְׁתָּofעַלthe Levitesהַלְוִיִּםto bringלְהָבִיאfrom Judahמִיהוּדָהand from Jerusalemוּמִירוּשָׁלִַםthe levyמַשְׂאַתof Moses,מֹשֶׁהthe servantעֶבֶדof YHWH,יְהוָהand of the assemblyוְהַקָּהָלof Israel,לְיִשְׂרָאֵלfor the tentלְאֹהֶלof the testimony?”הָעֵדוּת
ForכִּיAthaliah,עֲתַלְיָהוּthe wicked woman,הַמִּרְשַׁעַתand her sonsבָּנֶיהָhad made a breach inפָרְצוּthe houseבֵּיתof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםand alsoוְגַםallכָּלthe holy thingsקָדְשֵׁיof the houseבֵיתof YHWHיְהוָהthey had usedעָשׂוּfor the Baals.לַבְּעָלִים
The kingהַמֶּלֶךְgave the order,וַיֹּאמֶרand they madeוַיַּעֲשׂוּaאֶחָדchestאֲרוֹןand put itוַיִּתְּנֻהוּat the gateבְּשַׁעַרof the houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָהoutside.חוּצָה
They made a proclamationוַיִּתְּנוּ קוֹלin Judahבִּיהוּדָהand in Jerusalemוּבִירוּשָׁלִַםto bringלְהָבִיאto YHWHלַיהוָהthe levyמַשְׂאַתthat Moses,מֹשֶׁהthe servantעֶבֶדof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםhad laid onעַלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלin the wilderness.בַּמִּדְבָּר
Allכָלthe officialsהַשָּׂרִיםand allוְכָלthe peopleהָעָםrejoiced,וַיִּשְׂמְחוּand they brought itוַיָּבִיאוּand threw itוַיַּשְׁלִיכוּinto the chestלָאָרוֹןuntil they had finished.עַד לְכַלֵּה
And it happened,וַיְהִיwheneverבְּעֵתthe chestאֶת הָאָרוֹןwas broughtיָבִיאtoאֶלthe king’sהַמֶּלֶךְofficersפְּקֻדַּתby the handבְּיַדof the Levites,הַלְוִיִּםand when they sawוְכִרְאוֹתָםthatכִּיthere was muchרַבsilver,הַכֶּסֶףthe king’sהַמֶּלֶךְscribeסוֹפֵרand the appointed officerוּפְקִידof the headהָרֹאשׁpriestכֹּהֵןwould comeוּבָאand emptyוִיעָרוּthe chest,הָאָרוֹןand take itוְיִשָּׂאֻהוּand return itוִישִׁיבֻהוּtoאֶלits place.מְקֹמוֹSoכֹּהthey didעָשׂוּdayלְיוֹםby day,בְּיוֹםand they gatheredוַיַּאַסְפוּsilverכֶסֶףin abundance.לָרֹב
The kingהַמֶּלֶךְand Jehoiadaוִיהוֹיָדָעgave itוַיִּתְּנֵהוּtoאֶלthose doingעוֹשֵׂהthe workמְלֶאכֶתof the serviceעֲבוֹדַתof the houseבֵּיתof YHWH;יְהוָהand they wereוַיִּהְיוּhiringשֹׂכְרִיםstonecuttersחֹצְבִיםand craftsmenוְחָרָשִׁיםto renewלְחַדֵּשׁthe houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָהand alsoוְגַםcraftsmenלְחָרָשֵׁיin ironבַרְזֶלand bronzeוּנְחֹשֶׁתto repairלְחַזֵּקthe houseבֵּיתof YHWH.יְהוָה
Those doingעֹשֵׂיthe workהַמְּלָאכָהworked,וַיַּעֲשׂוּand the restorationאֲרוּכָהof the workלַמְּלָאכָהadvancedוַתַּעַלin their hand;בְּיָדָםthey set upוַיַּעֲמִידוּthe houseבֵּיתof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםaccording to its measureעַל מַתְכֻּנְתּוֹand strengthened it.וַיְאַמְּצֻהוּ
When they had finished,וּכְכַלּוֹתָםthey broughtהֵבִיאוּbeforeלִפְנֵיthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְand Jehoiadaוִיהוֹיָדָעthe restשְׁאָרof the silver,הַכֶּסֶףand they made itוַיַּעֲשֵׂהוּinto vesselsכֵלִיםfor the houseלְבֵיתof YHWH,יְהוָהvesselsכְּלֵיfor ministeringשָׁרֵתand for offering,וְהַעֲלוֹתand spoonsוְכַפּוֹתand vesselsוּכְלֵיof goldזָהָבand silver.וָכָסֶףAnd they wereוַיִּהְיוּofferingמַעֲלִיםburnt offeringsעֹלוֹתin the houseבְּבֵיתof YHWHיְהוָהcontinuallyתָּמִידallכֹּלthe daysיְמֵיof Jehoiada.יְהוֹיָדָע
Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָעgrew oldוַיִּזְקַןand was satisfiedוַיִּשְׂבַּעwith days,יָמִיםand he died;וַיָּמֹתhe was a hundredמֵאָהand thirtyוּשְׁלֹשִׁיםyears oldבֶּן שָׁנָהwhen he died.בְּמוֹתוֹ
They buried himוַיִּקְבְּרֻהוּin the cityבְעִירof Davidדָּוִידwithעִםthe kings,הַמְּלָכִיםbecauseכִּיhe had doneעָשָׂהgoodטוֹבָהin Israel,בְּיִשְׂרָאֵלand towardוְעִםElohimהָאֱלֹהִיםand his house.וּבֵיתוֹ
Afterוְאַחֲרֵיthe deathמוֹתof Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָעthe officialsשָׂרֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהcameבָּאוּand bowed downוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּto the king;לַמֶּלֶךְthenאָזthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְlistenedשָׁמַעto them.אֲלֵיהֶם
They abandonedוַיַּעַזְבוּthe houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָהElohimאֱלֹהֵיof their fathers,אֲבוֹתֵיהֶםand servedוַיַּעַבְדוּthe Asherahsהָאֲשֵׁרִיםandוְthe idols;הָעֲצַבִּיםand there was wrathוַיְהִי קֶצֶףonעַלJudahיְהוּדָהand Jerusalemוִירוּשָׁלִַםforבְּthisזֹאתguilt of theirs.אַשְׁמָתָם
He sentוַיִּשְׁלַחprophetsנְבִאִיםamong themבָּהֶםto bring them backלַהֲשִׁיבָםtoאֶלYHWH;יְהוָהthey testifiedוַיָּעִידוּagainst them,בָםbut they did notוְלֹאgive ear.הֶאֱזִינוּ
The spiritרוּחַof ElohimאֱלֹהִיםclothedלָבְשָׁהZechariahזְכַרְיָהsonבֶּןof Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָעthe priest;הַכֹּהֵןand he stoodוַיַּעֲמֹדaboveמֵעַלthe peopleלָעָםand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,לָהֶם“ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרElohim:הָאֱלֹהִים‘Whyלָמָהare youאַתֶּםtransgressingעֹבְרִיםthe commandmentsמִצְוֺתof YHWH?יְהוָהYou will notוְלֹאprosper;תַצְלִיחוּbecauseכִּיyou have abandonedעֲזַבְתֶּםYHWH,יְהוָהhe has abandonedוַיַּעֲזֹבyou.’”אֶתְכֶם
They conspiredוַיִּקְשְׁרוּagainst himעָלָיוand stoned himוַיִּרְגְּמֻהוּwith stonesאֶבֶןat the commandmentבְּמִצְוַתof the kingהַמֶּלֶךְin the courtבַּחֲצַרof the houseבֵּיתof YHWH.יְהוָה
Joashיוֹאָשׁthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְdid notוְלֹאrememberזָכַרthe loyal loveהַחֶסֶדthatאֲשֶׁרJehoiada,יְהוֹיָדָעZechariah’s father,אָבִיוhad shownעָשָׂהhim,עִמּוֹand he killedוַיַּהֲרֹגhis son.בְּנוֹAnd as he died,וּכְמוֹתוֹhe said,אָמַר“May YHWH seeיֵרֶא יְהוָהand call to account!”וְיִדְרֹשׁ
And it happened,וַיְהִיat the turnלִתְקוּפַתof the year,הַשָּׁנָהthat the forceחֵילof Aramאֲרָםcame upעָלָהagainst him;עָלָיוthey cameוַיָּבֹאוּtoאֶלJudahיְהוּדָהand Jerusalem,וִירוּשָׁלִַםand destroyedוַיַּשְׁחִיתוּallכָּלthe officialsשָׂרֵיof the peopleהָעָםfrom among the people,מֵעָםand allוְכָלtheir spoilשְׁלָלָםthey sentשִׁלְּחוּto the kingלְמֶלֶךְof Damascus.דַּרְמָשֶׂק
Forכִּיwith a fewבְמִצְעַרmenאֲנָשִׁיםthe forceחֵילof Aramאֲרָםcame,בָּאוּand YHWHוַיהוָהgaveנָתַןinto their handבְּיָדָםa veryמְאֹדgreatלָרֹבforce,חַיִלbecauseכִּיthey had abandonedעָזְבוּYHWH,יְהוָהElohimאֱלֹהֵיof their fathers.אֲבוֹתֵיהֶםAnd on Joashוְאֶת יוֹאָשׁthey executedעָשׂוּjudgments.שְׁפָטִים
When they had goneוּבְלֶכְתָּםfrom himמִמֶּנּוּ—forכִּיthey leftעָזְבוּhimאֹתוֹwith manyבְּ רַבִּיםailmentsמַחֲלוּיִם—his servantsעֲבָדָיוconspiredהִתְקַשְּׁרוּagainst himעָלָיוbecause of the bloodבִּדְמֵיof the sonsבְּנֵיof Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָעthe priest,הַכֹּהֵןand they killed himוַיַּהַרְגֻהוּonעַלhis bed,מִטָּתוֹand he died;וַיָּמֹתand they buried himוַיִּקְבְּרֻהוּin the cityבְּעִירof David,דָּוִידbut they did notוְלֹאbury himקְבָרֻהוּin the tombsבְּקִבְרוֹתof the kings.הַמְּלָכִים
Theseוְאֵלֶּהare the ones who conspiredהַמִּתְקַשְּׁרִיםagainst him:עָלָיוZabadזָבָדsonבֶּןof Shimeathשִׁמְעָתthe Ammonite woman,הָעַמּוֹנִיתand Jehozabadוִיהוֹזָבָדsonבֶּןof Shimrithשִׁמְרִיתthe Moabite woman.הַמּוֹאָבִית
As for his sons,וּבָנָיוand the abundanceיִרֶבof the burdenהַמַּשָּׂאupon him,עָלָיוand the foundingוִיסוֹדof the houseבֵּיתof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםthey areהִנָּםwrittenכְּתוּבִיםinעַלthe treatiseמִדְרַשׁof the bookסֵפֶרof the kings.הַמְּלָכִיםAnd Amaziahוַ אֲמַצְיָהוּhis sonבְנוֹreignedיִּמְלֹךְin his place.תַּחְתָּיו
