Amaziahאֲמַצְיָהוּwas twenty-fiveעֶשְׂרִים וְחָמֵשׁyears oldבֶּן שָׁנָהwhen he became king,מָלַךְandוְhe reignedמָלַךְtwenty-nineעֶשְׂרִים וָתֵשַׁעyearsשָׁנָהin Jerusalem.בִּירוּשָׁלִָםThe nameוְשֵׁםof his motherאִמּוֹwas Jehoaddanיְהוֹעַדָּןof Jerusalem.מִירוּשָׁלָיִם
He didוַיַּעַשׂwhat was rightהַיָּשָׁרin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof YHWH,יְהוָהonlyרַקnotלֹאwith a wholeבְּ שָׁלֵםheart.לֵבָב
And it happened,וַיְהִיas soon asכַּאֲשֶׁרthe kingdomהַמַּמְלָכָהwas firmחָזְקָהupon him,עָלָיוthat he killedוַיַּהֲרֹגhis servantsאֶת עֲבָדָיוwho had struckהַמַּכִּיםthe kingאֶת הַמֶּלֶךְhis father.אָבִיו
But their sonsוְאֶת בְּנֵיהֶםhe did notלֹאput to death,הֵמִיתbutכִּיacted according to what is writtenכַכָּתוּבin the law,בַּתּוֹרָהin the bookבְּסֵפֶרof Moses,מֹשֶׁהwhereאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהcommanded,צִוָּהsaying,לֵאמֹר“Fathersאָבוֹתshall notלֹאdieיָמוּתוּfor sons,עַל בָּנִיםand sonsוּבָנִיםshall notלֹאdieיָמוּתוּfor fathers;עַל אָבוֹתbutכִּיeachאִישׁshall dieיָמוּתוּfor his own sin.”בְּחֶטְאוֹ
AmaziahאֲמַצְיָהוּgatheredוַיִּקְבֹּץJudahאֶת יְהוּדָהand set themוַיַּעֲמִידֵםby fathers’ houses,לְבֵית אָבוֹתunder commandersלְשָׂרֵיof thousandsהָאֲלָפִיםand under commandersוּלְשָׂרֵיof hundreds,הַמֵּאוֹתfor allלְכָלJudahיְהוּדָהand Benjamin;וּבִנְיָמִןand he counted themוַיִּפְקְדֵםfromלְמִtwentyעֶשְׂרִיםyears oldבֶּן שָׁנָהand upward,וָמַעְלָהand found themוַיִּמְצָאֵםto be threeשְׁלֹשׁhundredמֵאוֹתthousandאֶלֶףchosen menבָּחוּרgoing outיוֹצֵאto the army,צָבָאhandlingאֹחֵזspearרֹמַחand large shield.וְצִנָּה
He hiredוַיִּשְׂכֹּרfrom Israelמִיִּשְׂרָאֵלa hundredמֵאָהthousandאֶלֶףmighty menגִּבּוֹרof valorחָיִלfor a hundredבְּמֵאָהtalentsכִכַּרof silver.כָּסֶף
But a manוְאִישׁof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםcameבָּאto him,אֵלָיוsaying,לֵאמֹר“O king,הַמֶּלֶךְdo not letאַלthe armyצְבָאof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלgoיָבֹאwith you,עִמְּךָforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהis notאֵיןwith Israel,עִם יִשְׂרָאֵלwith allכֹּלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Ephraim.אֶפְרָיִם
Butכִּיifאִםyouאַתָּהgo,בֹּאdo it,עֲשֵׂהbe strongחֲזַקfor the war:לַמִּלְחָמָהElohimהָאֱלֹהִיםwill make you stumbleיַכְשִׁילְךָbeforeלִפְנֵיthe enemy;אוֹיֵבforכִּיthere isיֶשׁpowerכֹּחַin Elohimבֵּאלֹהִיםto helpלַעְזוֹרand to make stumble.”וּלְהַכְשִׁיל
Amaziahאֲמַצְיָהוּsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto the manלְאִישׁof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִים“And whatוּמַהis to be doneלַּעֲשׂוֹתabout the hundredלִמְאַתtalentsהַכִּכָּרthatאֲשֶׁרI have givenנָתַתִּיto the bandלִגְדוּדof Israel?”יִשְׂרָאֵלThe manאִישׁof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“YHWHלַיהוָהhas the meansיֵשׁto giveלָתֶתyouלְךָmuch moreהַרְבֵּהthan this.”מִזֶּה
Amaziahאֲמַצְיָהוּseparated them,וַיַּבְדִּילֵםthe bandלְהַגְּדוּדthatאֲשֶׁרhad comeבָּאto himאֵלָיוfrom Ephraim,מֵאֶפְרַיִםto goלָלֶכֶתto their place;לִמְקוֹמָםand their angerוַ אַפָּםburnedיִּחַרgreatlyמְאֹדagainst Judah,בִּיהוּדָהand they returnedוַיָּשׁוּבוּto their placeלִמְקוֹמָםin burningבָּחֳרִיanger.אָף
Amaziahוַאֲמַצְיָהוּstrengthened himselfהִתְחַזַּקand ledוַיִּנְהַגhis peopleאֶת עַמּוֹand wentוַיֵּלֶךְto the Valleyגֵּיאof Salt,הַמֶּלַחand struckוַיַּךְthe sonsאֶת בְּנֵיof Seir,שֵׂעִירtenעֲשֶׂרֶתthousand.אֲלָפִים
The sonsבְּנֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהalsoוַtook captiveשָׁבוּtenעֲשֶׂרֶתthousandאֲלָפִיםalive,חַיִּיםand brought themוַיְבִיאוּםto the topלְרֹאשׁof the rockהַסָּלַעand threw them downוַיַּשְׁלִיכוּםfrom the topמֵרֹאשׁof the rock,הַסֶּלַעand all of themוְכֻלָּםwere dashed to pieces.נִבְקָעוּ
But the membersוּבְנֵיof the bandהַגְּדוּדthatאֲשֶׁרAmaziahאֲמַצְיָהוּhad sent backהֵשִׁיבfrom goingמִלֶּכֶתwith himעִמּוֹto warלַמִּלְחָמָהmade raidsוַיִּפְשְׁטוּon the citiesבְּעָרֵיof Judah,יְהוּדָהfrom SamariaמִשֹּׁמְרוֹןtoוְעַדBeth-horon,בֵּית חוֹרוֹןand struckוַיַּכּוּof themמֵהֶםthreeשְׁלֹשֶׁתthousand,אֲלָפִיםand plunderedוַיָּבֹזּוּmuchרַבָּהplunder.בִּזָּה
And it happened,וַיְהִיafterאַחֲרֵיAmaziahאֲמַצְיָהוּcameבוֹאfrom strikingמֵהַכּוֹתthe Edomites,אֶת אֲדוֹמִיםthat he broughtוַיָּבֵאthe godsאֶת אֱלֹהֵיof the sonsבְּנֵיof Seir,שֵׂעִירand set them upוַיַּעֲמִידֵםfor himselfלוֹas gods;לֵאלֹהִיםand before themוְלִפְנֵיהֶםhe would bow down,יִשְׁתַּחֲוֶהand to themוְלָהֶםhe would burn incense.יְקַטֵּר
The angerוַ אַףof YHWHיְהוָהburnedיִּחַרagainst Amaziah,בַּאֲמַצְיָהוּand he sentוַיִּשְׁלַחto himאֵלָיוa prophet,נָבִיאwho saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“Whyלָמָּהhave you soughtדָרַשְׁתָּthe godsאֶת אֱלֹהֵיof the peopleהָעָםthatאֲשֶׁרdid notלֹאdeliverהִצִּילוּtheir own peopleאֶת עַמָּםfrom your hand?”מִיָּדֶךָ
And it happened,וַיְהִיas he was speakingבְּדַבְּרוֹto him,אֵלָיוthat the king saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“Have we made youהַ נְתַנּוּךָa counselorלְיוֹעֵץto the king?לַמֶּלֶךְStop!חֲדַל לְךָWhyלָמָּהshould they strike you down?”יַכּוּךָSo the prophetוַ הַנָּבִיאstopped,יֶּחְדַּלbut said,וַיֹּאמֶר“I knowיָדַעְתִּיthatכִּיElohimאֱלֹהִיםhas decidedיָעַץto destroy you,לְהַשְׁחִיתֶךָbecauseכִּיyou have doneעָשִׂיתָthisזֹּאתand have notוְלֹאlistenedשָׁמַעְתָּto my counsel.”לַעֲצָתִי
Amaziahאֲמַצְיָהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judahיְהוּדָהtook counselוַיִּוָּעַץand sentוַיִּשְׁלַחto Joashאֶל יוֹאָשׁsonבֶּןof Jehoahazיְהוֹאָחָזsonבֶּןof Jehu,יֵהוּאkingמֶלֶךְof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלsaying,לֵאמֹר“Come,לְכָהlet us look each otherנִתְרָאֶהin the face.”פָנִים
Joashיוֹאָשׁkingמֶלֶךְof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלsentוַיִּשְׁלַחto Amaziahאֶל אֲמַצְיָהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהsaying,לֵאמֹר“The thistleהַחוֹחַthatאֲשֶׁרis in Lebanonבַּלְּבָנוֹןsentשָׁלַחto the cedarאֶל הָאֶרֶזthatאֲשֶׁרis in Lebanon,בַּלְּבָנוֹןsaying,לֵאמֹר‘Giveתְּנָהyour daughterאֶת בִּתְּךָto my sonלִבְנִיas wife.’לְאִשָּׁהThen an animalחַיַּתof the fieldהַשָּׂדֶהthatאֲשֶׁרis in Lebanonבַּלְּבָנוֹןpassed byוַתַּעֲבֹרand trampledוַתִּרְמֹסthe thistle.אֶת הַחוֹחַ
You have said,אָמַרְתָּ‘Look,הִנֵּהI have struckהִכִּיתָEdom,’אֶת אֱדוֹםand your heartוּ לִבְּךָhas lifted you upנְשָׂאֲךָto glory in it.לְהַכְבִּידNowעַתָּהstayשְׁבָהin your house.בְּבֵיתֶךָWhyלָמָּהshould you provokeתִתְגָּרֶהevilבְּרָעָהand fall,וְנָפַלְתָּyouאַתָּהand Judahוִיהוּדָהwith you?”עִמָּךְ
But Amaziahוְ אֲמַצְיָהוּdid notלֹאlisten,שָׁמַעforכִּיitהִיאwas from Elohim,מֵהָאֱלֹהִיםin orderלְמַעַןto give themתִּתָּםinto the handבְּיָדof their enemies,becauseכִּיthey had soughtדָרְשׁוּthe godsאֵת אֱלֹהֵיof Edom.אֱדוֹם
So Joashוַ יוֹאָשׁkingמֶלֶךְof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwent up,יַּעַלand they looked each otherוַיִּתְרָאוּin the face,פָנִיםheהוּאand Amaziahוַאֲמַצְיָהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהat Beth-shemesh,בְּבֵית שֶׁמֶשׁwhichאֲשֶׁרbelongs to Judah.לִיהוּדָה
Judahיְהוּדָהwas struck downוַיִּנָּגֶףbeforeלִפְנֵיIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלand they fled,וַיָּנֻסוּeachאִישׁto his tent.לְאֹהָלָיו
And Amaziahוְאֵת אֲמַצְיָהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהsonבֶּןof Joashיוֹאָשׁsonבֶּןof Jehoahaz,יְהוֹאָחָזJoashיוֹאָשׁkingמֶלֶךְof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלseizedתָּפַשׂat Beth-shemesh,בְּבֵית שָׁמֶשׁand brought himוַיְבִיאֵהוּto Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםand made a breachוַיִּפְרֹץin the wallבְּחוֹמַתof Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםfrom the Gateמִשַּׁעַרof Ephraimאֶפְרַיִםtoעַדthe Corner Gate,שַׁעַר הַפּוֹנֶהfourאַרְבַּעhundredמֵאוֹתcubits.אַמָּה
He took allוְכָלthe goldהַזָּהָבand the silver,וְהַכֶּסֶףand allוְאֵת כָּלthe utensilsהַכֵּלִיםthat were foundהַנִּמְצְאִיםin the houseבְּבֵיתof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםwith Obed-edom,עִם עֹבֵד אֱדוֹםand the treasuriesוְאֶת אֹצְרוֹתof the houseבֵּיתof the king,הַמֶּלֶךְand the hostages,וְאֵת בְּנֵי הַתַּעֲרֻבוֹתand returnedוַיָּשָׁבto Samaria.שֹׁמְרוֹן
Amaziahאֲמַצְיָהוּsonבֶןof Joash,יוֹאָשׁkingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהlivedוַיְחִיafterאַחֲרֵיthe deathמוֹתof Joashיוֹאָשׁsonבֶּןof Jehoahaz,יְהוֹאָחָזkingמֶלֶךְof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלfifteenחֲמֵשׁ עֶשְׂרֵהyears.שָׁנָה
The restוְיֶתֶרof the actsדִּבְרֵיof Amaziah,אֲמַצְיָהוּthe firstהָרִאשֹׁנִיםand the last,וְהָאַחֲרוֹנִיםare they notהֲלֹא הִנָּםwrittenכְּתוּבִיםin the bookעַל סֵפֶרof the kingsמַלְכֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהand Israel?וְיִשְׂרָאֵל
From the timeוּמֵעֵתthatאֲשֶׁרAmaziahאֲמַצְיָהוּturned awayסָרfrom followingמֵאַחֲרֵיYHWH,יְהוָהthey made a conspiracyוַיִּקְשְׁרוּ קֶשֶׁרagainst himעָלָיוin Jerusalem,בִּירוּשָׁלִַםand he fledוַיָּנָסto Lachish;לָכִישָׁהand they sentוַיִּשְׁלְחוּafter himאַחֲרָיוto Lachishלָכִישָׁהand put him to deathוַיְמִיתֻהוּthere.שָׁם
They carried himוַיִּשָּׂאֻהוּon the horsesעַל הַסּוּסִיםand buriedוַיִּקְבְּרוּhimאֹתוֹwith his fathersעִם אֲבֹתָיוin the cityבְּעִירof Judah.יְהוּדָה
