Jonah 1

And the wordוַ דְּבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcameיְהִיtoאֶלJonahיוֹנָהsonבֶןof Amittai,אֲמִתַּיsaying,לֵאמֹר

“Arise,קוּםgoלֵךְtoאֶלNineveh,נִינְוֵהthe greatהַגְּדוֹלָהcity,הָעִירand cry outוּקְרָאagainst it,עָלֶיהָforכִּיtheir evilרָעָתָםhas come upעָלְתָהbefore me.”לְפָנָי

But Jonahוַ יוֹנָהroseיָּקָםto fleeלִבְרֹחַto Tarshishתַּרְשִׁישָׁהfrom the presenceמִלִּפְנֵיof YHWH.יְהוָהHe went downוַיֵּרֶדtoJoppaיָפוֹand foundוַיִּמְצָאa shipאָנִיָּהgoingבָּאָהtoTarshish;תַרְשִׁישׁhe paidוַיִּתֵּןits fareשְׂכָרָהּand went downוַיֵּרֶדinto itבָּהּto goלָבוֹאwith themעִמָּהֶםto Tarshish,תַּרְשִׁישָׁהfrom the presenceמִלִּפְנֵיof YHWH.יְהוָה

But YHWHוַיהוָהhurledהֵטִילa greatגְּדוֹלָהwindרוּחַonאֶלthe sea,הַיָּםand there wasוַיְהִיa greatגָּדוֹלstormסַעַרon the sea,בַּיָּםand the shipוְהָאֳנִיָּהwas aboutחִשְּׁבָהto break up.לְהִשָּׁבֵר

And the sailorsוַ הַמַּלָּחִיםwere afraid,יִּירְאוּand they cried out,וַיִּזְעֲקוּeachאִישׁtoאֶלhis god,אֱלֹהָיוand they hurledוַיָּטִלוּthe objectsאֶת הַכֵּלִיםthatאֲשֶׁרwerein the shipבָּאֳנִיָּהintoאֶלthe seaהַיָּםto lighten the loadלְהָקֵלfor themselves.מֵעֲלֵיהֶםBut Jonahוְיוֹנָהhad gone downיָרַדintoאֶלthe innermost partsיַרְכְּתֵיof the vesselהַסְּפִינָהand had lain downוַיִּשְׁכַּבand was sound asleep.וַיֵּרָדַם

And the chiefוַ רַבof the sailorsהַחֹבֵלcame nearיִּקְרַבto himאֵלָיוand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“What is the matter with you,מַה לְּךָsleeper?נִרְדָּםArise,קוּםcry outקְרָאtoאֶלyour god;אֱלֹהֶיךָperhapsאוּלַיthat godהָאֱלֹהִיםwill give a thoughtיִתְעַשֵּׁתto us,לָנוּand we will notוְלֹאperish.”נֹאבֵד

And they saidוַיֹּאמְרוּeachאִישׁtoאֶלhis companion,רֵעֵהוּ“Come,לְכוּlet us castוְנַפִּילָהlots,גוֹרָלוֹתand let us knowוְנֵדְעָהon whose accountבְּשֶׁלְּמִיthisהַזֹּאתevilהָרָעָהhas comeon us.”לָנוּSo they castוַיַּפִּלוּlots,גּוֹרָלוֹתand the lotוַ הַגּוֹרָלfellיִּפֹּלonעַלJonah.יוֹנָה

Then they saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto him,אֵלָיו“Tellהַגִּידָהus,לָנוּplease,נָּאon whose accountבַּאֲשֶׁר לְמִיthisהַזֹּאתevilהָרָעָהhas comeon us.לָנוּWhatמַהisyour occupation,מְּלַאכְתְּךָand from whereוּמֵאַיִןdo you come?תָּבוֹאWhatמָהisyour country,אַרְצֶךָand from whatוְאֵי מִזֶּהpeopleעַםareyou?”אָתָּה

And he saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵיהֶם“Iאָנֹכִיama Hebrew,עִבְרִיandוְIאֲנִיfearיָרֵאYHWH,אֶת יְהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof the heavens,הַשָּׁמַיִםwhoאֲשֶׁרmadeעָשָׂהthe seaאֶת הַיָּםand the dry land.”וְאֶת הַיַּבָּשָׁה

Then the menוַ הָאֲנָשִׁיםfearedיִּירְאוּwith greatגְדוֹלָהfear,יִרְאָהand they saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto him,אֵלָיו“Whatמַהisthisזֹּאתthatyou have done?”עָשִׂיתָForכִּיthe menהָאֲנָשִׁיםknewיָדְעוּthatכִּיheהוּאwas fleeingבֹרֵחַfrom the presenceמִלִּפְנֵיof YHWH,יְהוָהbecauseכִּיhe had toldהִגִּידthem.לָהֶם

And they saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto him,אֵלָיו“Whatמַהshall we doנַּעֲשֶׂהto you,לָּךְthat the seaוְ הַיָּםmay calm downיִשְׁתֹּקand leaveus?”מֵעָלֵינוּForכִּיthe seaהַיָּםwas growing more and moreהוֹלֵךְ וְstormy.סֹעֵר

He saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵיהֶם“Pick me upשָׂאוּנִיand hurl meוַהֲטִילֻנִיintoאֶלthe sea,הַיָּםand the seaוְ הַיָּםwill calm downיִשְׁתֹּקand leaveyou;מֵעֲלֵיכֶםforכִּיIאָנִיknowיוֹדֵעַthatכִּיbecause of meבְשֶׁלִּיthisהַזֶּהgreatהַגָּדוֹלstormהַסַּעַרhas comeon you.”עֲלֵיכֶם

Then the menוַ הָאֲנָשִׁיםrowed hardיַּחְתְּרוּto get backלְהָשִׁיבtoאֶלthe dry land,הַיַּבָּשָׁהbut they could not,וְלֹא יָכֹלוּforכִּיthe seaהַיָּםwas growing more and moreהוֹלֵךְ וְstormyסֹעֵרagainst them.עֲלֵיהֶם

So they cried outוַיִּקְרְאוּtoאֶלYHWHיְהוָהand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“We beg you,אָנָּהYHWH,יְהוָהlet us notאַלnowנָאperishנֹאבְדָהforבְּthe soulנֶפֶשׁof thisהַזֶּהman,הָאִישׁand do notוְאַלlayתִּתֵּןon usעָלֵינוּinnocentנָקִיאblood;דָּםforכִּיyou,אַתָּהYHWH,יְהוָהhave doneעָשִׂיתָasכַּאֲשֶׁרyou pleased.”חָפַצְתָּ

Then they picked upוַיִּשְׂאוּJonahאֶת יוֹנָהand hurled himוַיְטִלֻהוּintoאֶלthe sea,הַיָּםand the seaוַ הַיָּםceasedיַּעֲמֹדfrom its fury.מִזַּעְפּוֹ

Then the menוַ הָאֲנָשִׁיםfearedיִּירְאוּYHWHאֶת יְהוָהwith greatגְדוֹלָהfear,יִרְאָהand they offeredוַיִּזְבְּחוּa sacrificeזֶבַחto YHWHלַיהוָהand madeוַיִּדְּרוּvows.נְדָרִים

And YHWHוַ יְהוָהappointedיְמַןa greatגָּדוֹלfishדָּגto swallowלִבְלֹעַJonah,אֶת יוֹנָהand Jonahוַ יוֹנָהwasיְהִיin the inner partsבִּמְעֵיof the fishהַדָּגthreeשְׁלֹשָׁהdaysיָמִיםand threeוּשְׁלֹשָׁהnights.לֵילוֹת1
