Jonah 1:4, word by word
- But YHWHיהוָהyhva
YHWH
The personal name of the God of Israel, written in Hebrew with four letters, Y-H-W-H, without vowels. Out of reverence Jews stopped pronouncing it and read "Adonai" (Lord), so many Bibles put "the LORD" or "Jehovah". This translation keeps the four letters. The name is related to the verb "to be" (Exodus 3:14-15). He is not a god other than Elohim: "YHWH Elohim" is the same Creator God, called by his name.

3But Jonah rose to flee to Tarshish from the presence of YHWH. He went down to Joppa and found a ship going to Tarshish; he paid its fare and went down into it to go with them to Tarshish, from the presence of YHWH.
4 · This verse (above)
5And the sailors were afraid, and they cried out, each to his god, and they hurled the objects that were in the ship into the sea to lighten the load for themselves. But Jonah had gone down into the innermost parts of the vessel and had lain down and was sound asleep.
