The visionחֲזוֹןof Obadiah.עֹבַדְיָהThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWHיְהוִהconcerning Edom:לֶאֱדוֹםA reportשְׁמוּעָהwe have heardשָׁמַעְנוּfromמֵאֵתYHWH,יְהוָהand an envoyוְצִירhas been sentשֻׁלָּחamong the nations:בַּגּוֹיִם“Rise up,קוּמוּand let us riseוְנָקוּמָהagainst herעָלֶיהָfor battle!”לַמִּלְחָמָה
Look,הִנֵּהsmallקָטֹןI have made youנְתַתִּיךָamong the nations;בַּגּוֹיִםdespisedבָּזוּיare youאַתָּהgreatly.מְאֹד
The arroganceזְדוֹןof your heartלִבְּךָhas deceived you,הִשִּׁיאֶךָyou who dwellשֹׁכְנִיin the cleftsבְחַגְוֵיof the rock,סֶּלַעin the heightמְרוֹםof his dwelling,שִׁבְתּוֹwho saysאֹמֵרin his heart,בְּלִבּוֹ“Whoמִיwill bring me downיוֹרִדֵנִיto the earth?”אָרֶץ
Thoughאִםyou soar highתַּגְבִּיהַּlike the eagle,כַּנֶּשֶׁרand thoughוְאִםamong the starsבֵּין כּוֹכָבִיםyour nest is set,שִׂים קִנֶּךָfrom thereמִשָּׁםI will bring you down,אוֹרִידְךָdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH.יְהוָה
Ifאִםthievesגַּנָּבִיםcameבָּאוּto you,לְךָifאִםplunderersשׁוֹדְדֵיby nightלַיְלָה(howאֵיךְyou have been destroyed!),נִדְמֵיתָהwould they notהֲלוֹאstealיִגְנְבוּonly what was enough for them?דַּיָּםIfאִםgrape gatherersבֹּצְרִיםcameבָּאוּto you,לָךְwould they notהֲלוֹאleaveיַשְׁאִירוּgleanings?עֹלֵלוֹת
HowאֵיךְEsauעֵשָׂוhas been searched out,נֶחְפְּשׂוּhis hidden treasuresמַצְפֻּנָיוsought out!נִבְעוּ
To the borderעַד הַגְּבוּלthey have sent you,שִׁלְּחוּךָallכֹּלthe menאַנְשֵׁיof your covenant;בְרִיתֶךָthey have deceived you,הִשִּׁיאוּךָthey have prevailedיָכְלוּagainst you,לְךָthe menאַנְשֵׁיof your peace;שְׁלֹמֶךָthose who eat your breadלַחְמְךָwill setיָשִׂימוּa trapמָזוֹרunder you.תַּחְתֶּיךָThere is noאֵיןunderstandingתְּבוּנָהin him.בּוֹ
Will I not,הֲלוֹאon that day,בַּיּוֹם הַהוּאdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH,יְהוָהdestroyוְהַאֲבַדְתִּיthe wiseחֲכָמִיםfrom Edom,מֵאֱדוֹםand understandingוּתְבוּנָהfrom the mountainמֵהַרof Esau?עֵשָׂו
And your mighty menוְ גִבּוֹרֶיךָwill be dismayed,חַתּוּTeman,תֵּימָןso thatלְמַעַןevery manאִישׁwill be cut offיִכָּרֶתfrom the mountainמֵהַרof Esauעֵשָׂוby slaughter.מִקָּטֶל
Because of the violenceמֵחֲמַסdone to your brotherאָחִיךָJacob,יַעֲקֹבshameבוּשָׁהwill cover you,תְּכַסְּךָand you will be cut offוְנִכְרַתָּforever.לְעוֹלָם
On the dayבְּיוֹםthat you stoodעֲמָדְךָaloof,מִנֶּגֶדon the dayבְּיוֹםthat strangersזָרִיםcarried offשְׁבוֹתhis army,חֵילוֹand foreignersוְנָכְרִיםenteredבָּאוּhis gatesשְׁעָרָיוand castיַדּוּlotsגוֹרָלover Jerusalem,וְעַל יְרוּשָׁלִַםyou tooגַּם אַתָּהwere like oneכְּאַחַדof them.מֵהֶם
And you should notוְאַלhave lookedתֵּרֶאon the dayבְיוֹםof your brother,אָחִיךָon the dayבְּיוֹםof his misfortune,נָכְרוֹnorוְאַלrejoicedתִּשְׂמַחover the sonsלִבְנֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהon the dayבְּיוֹםof their ruin,אָבְדָםnorוְאַלmade your mouth largeתַּגְדֵּל פִּיךָon the dayבְּיוֹםof distress.צָרָה
You should notאַלhave enteredתָּבוֹאthe gateבְשַׁעַרof my peopleעַמִּיon the dayבְּיוֹםof their calamity;אֵידָםyou should notאַלhave looked,תֵּרֶאyou too,גַם אַתָּהon his disasterבְּרָעָתוֹon the dayבְּיוֹםof his calamity,אֵידוֹnorוְאַלlaid handsתִּשְׁלַחְנָהon his wealthבְחֵילוֹon the dayבְּיוֹםof his calamity.אֵידוֹ
Norוְאַלshould you have stoodתַּעֲמֹדat the crossroadsעַל הַפֶּרֶקto cut offלְהַכְרִיתhis fugitives,פְּלִיטָיוnorוְאַלhanded overתַּסְגֵּרhis survivorsשְׂרִידָיוon the dayבְּיוֹםof distress.צָרָה
Forכִּיnearקָרוֹבis the dayיוֹםof YHWHיְהוָהupon allעַל כָּלthe nations.הַגּוֹיִםAsכַּאֲשֶׁרyou have done,עָשִׂיתָit will be doneיֵעָשֶׂהto you;לָּךְyour deedsגְּמֻלְךָwill returnיָשׁוּבon your own head.בְּרֹאשֶׁךָ
Forכִּיasכַּאֲשֶׁרyou drankשְׁתִיתֶםon my holyקָדְשִׁיmountain,עַל הַרallכָלthe nationsהַגּוֹיִםwill drinkיִשְׁתּוּcontinually;תָּמִידthey will drinkוְשָׁתוּand swallow downוְלָעוּand will beוְהָיוּas though they had notכְּלוֹאbeen.הָיוּ
But on MountוּבְהַרZionצִיּוֹןthere will beתִּהְיֶהan escape,פְלֵיטָהand it will beוְהָיָהholy,קֹדֶשׁand the houseוְ בֵּיתof Jacobיַעֲקֹבwill possessיָרְשׁוּtheir possessions.מוֹרָשֵׁיהֶם
And the houseוְ בֵיתof Jacobיַעֲקֹבwill beהָיָהa fire,אֵשׁand the houseוּבֵיתof Josephיוֹסֵףa flame,לֶהָבָהand the houseוּבֵיתof Esauעֵשָׂוstubble;לְקַשׁand they will burnוְדָלְקוּamong themבָהֶםand consume them,וַאֲכָלוּםand there will notוְלֹאbeיִהְיֶהa survivorשָׂרִידof the houseלְבֵיתof Esau,עֵשָׂוforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhas spoken.דִּבֵּר
And those of the Negevוְ הַנֶּגֶבwill possessיָרְשׁוּthe mountainהַרof Esau,עֵשָׂוand those ofוְthe Shephelahהַשְּׁפֵלָהthe Philistines;פְּלִשְׁתִּיםand they will possessוְיָרְשׁוּthe fieldשְׂדֵהof Ephraimאֶפְרַיִםandוְthe fieldשְׂדֵהof Samaria,שֹׁמְרוֹןand BenjaminוּבִנְיָמִןGilead.הַגִּלְעָד
And the exilesוְגָלֻתof thisהַזֶּהhostהַחֵלof the sonsלִבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwill possess whatאֲשֶׁרbelongs to the Canaanitesכְּנַעֲנִיםas far as Zarephath,עַד צָרְפַתand the exilesוְגָלֻתof Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםwhoאֲשֶׁרare in Sepharadבִּסְפָרַדwill possessיִרְשׁוּthe citiesעָרֵיof the Negev.הַנֶּגֶב
And deliverersוְ מוֹשִׁעִיםwill go upעָלוּon MountבְּהַרZionצִיּוֹןto judgeלִשְׁפֹּטthe mountainהַרof Esau,עֵשָׂוand the kingdomוְ הַמְּלוּכָהwill beהָיְתָהYHWH’s.לַיהוָה
