He wasהָיָהtwenty-fiveעֶשְׂרִים וְחָמֵשׁyears oldבֶּן שָׁנָהwhen he became king,בְמָלְכוֹand he reignedוְ מָלַךְtwenty-nineעֶשְׂרִים וָתֵשַׁעyearsשָׁנָהin Jerusalem.בִּירוּשָׁלִָםThe nameוְשֵׁםof his motherאִמּוֹwas Jehoaddanיְהוֹעַדָּןof Jerusalem.מִן יְרוּשָׁלִָם
He didוַיַּעַשׂwhat was rightהַיָּשָׁרin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof YHWH,יְהוָהonlyרַקnotלֹאlike Davidכְּדָוִדhis father;אָבִיוhe didעָשָׂהaccording to allכְּכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרJoashיוֹאָשׁhis fatherאָבִיוhad done.עָשָׂה
Onlyרַקthe high placesהַבָּמוֹתdid notלֹאgo away;סָרוּthe peopleהָעָםwere stillעוֹדsacrificingמְזַבְּחִיםand burning incenseוּמְקַטְּרִיםon the high places.בַּבָּמוֹת
And it happened,וַיְהִיas soon asכַּאֲשֶׁרthe kingdomהַמַּמְלָכָהwas firmחָזְקָהin his hand,בְּיָדוֹthat he struckוַיַּךְhis servantsאֶת עֲבָדָיוwho had struckהַמַּכִּיםthe kingאֶת הַמֶּלֶךְhis father.אָבִיו
But the sonsוְאֶת בְּנֵיof those who struck himהַמַּכִּיםhe did notלֹאput to death,הֵמִיתaccording to what is writtenכַּכָּתוּבin the bookבְּסֵפֶרof the lawתּוֹרַתof Moses,מֹשֶׁהwhichאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהcommanded,צִוָּהsaying,לֵאמֹר“Fathersאָבוֹתshall notלֹאbe put to deathיוּמְתוּfor sons,עַל בָּנִיםand sonsוּבָנִיםshall notלֹאbe put to deathיוּמְתוּfor fathers;עַל אָבוֹתbutכִּי אִםeachאִישׁshall be put to deathיוּמָתfor his own sin.”בְּחֶטְאוֹ
HeהוּאstruckהִכָּהEdomאֶת אֱדוֹםin the Valleyבְּגֵיאof Salt,מֶלַחtenעֲשֶׂרֶתthousand,אֲלָפִיםand seizedוְתָפַשׂSelaאֶת הַסֶּלַעin battle,בַּמִּלְחָמָהand calledוַיִּקְרָאits nameאֶת שְׁמָהּJoktheel,יָקְתְאֵלtoעַדthisהַזֶּהday.הַיּוֹם
ThenאָזAmaziahאֲמַצְיָהsentשָׁלַחmessengersמַלְאָכִיםto Joashאֶל יְהוֹאָשׁsonבֶּןof Jehoahazיְהוֹאָחָזsonבֶּןof Jehu,יֵהוּאkingמֶלֶךְof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלsaying,לֵאמֹר“Come,לְכָהlet us look each otherנִתְרָאֶהin the face.”פָנִים

You have indeed struckהַכֵּה הִכִּיתָEdom,אֶת אֱדוֹםand your heartוּ לִבֶּךָhas lifted you up.נְשָׂאֲךָGlory in it,הִכָּבֵדand stayוְשֵׁבin your house.בְּבֵיתֶךָWhyוְלָמָּהshould you provokeתִתְגָּרֶהevilבְּרָעָהand fall,וְנָפַלְתָּהyouאַתָּהand Judahוִיהוּדָהwith you?”עִמָּךְ
But Amaziahוְ אֲמַצְיָהוּdid notלֹאlisten.שָׁמַעSo Joashוַ יְהוֹאָשׁkingמֶלֶךְof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwent up,יַּעַלand they looked each otherוַיִּתְרָאוּin the face,פָנִיםheהוּאand Amaziahוַאֲמַצְיָהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהat Beth-shemesh,בְּבֵית שֶׁמֶשׁwhichאֲשֶׁרbelongs to Judah.לִיהוּדָה
Judahיְהוּדָהwas struck downוַיִּנָּגֶףbeforeלִפְנֵיIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלand they fled,וַיָּנֻסוּeachאִישׁto his tent.לְאֹהָלָיו
And Amaziahוְאֵת אֲמַצְיָהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהsonבֶּןof Joashיְהוֹאָשׁsonבֶּןof Ahaziah,אֲחַזְיָהוּJoashיְהוֹאָשׁkingמֶלֶךְof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלseizedתָּפַשׂat Beth-shemesh;בְּבֵית שָׁמֶשׁand he cameוַיָּבֹאto Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםand made a breachוַיִּפְרֹץin the wallבְּחוֹמַתof Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםfrom the Gateבְּשַׁעַרof Ephraimאֶפְרַיִםtoעַדthe Corner Gate,שַׁעַר הַפִּנָּהfourאַרְבַּעhundredמֵאוֹתcubits.אַמָּה
