Joashיְהוֹאָשׁdidוַיַּעַשׂwhat was rightהַיָּשָׁרin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof YHWHיְהוָהallכָּלhis days,יָמָיוin whichאֲשֶׁרJehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָעthe priestהַכֹּהֵןinstructed him.הוֹרָהוּ
Onlyרַקthe high placesהַבָּמוֹתdid notלֹאgo away;סָרוּthe peopleהָעָםwere stillעוֹדsacrificingמְזַבְּחִיםand burning incenseוּמְקַטְּרִיםon the high places.בַּבָּמוֹת
Joashיְהוֹאָשׁsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלthe priests,הַכֹּהֲנִים“Allכֹּלthe silverכֶּסֶףof the holy thingsהַקֳּדָשִׁיםthatאֲשֶׁרis broughtיוּבָאinto the houseבֵיתof YHWH,יְהוָהthe silverכֶּסֶףof the one who passes the census,עוֹבֵרthe silverכֶּסֶףof the personsנַפְשׁוֹתaccording to the valuationעֶרְכּof each one,אִישׁ וֹallכָּלthe silverכֶּסֶףthatאֲשֶׁרit comes upיַעֲלֶהin anyone’sאִישׁheartעַל לֶבto bringלְהָבִיאinto the houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָה
let the priestsהַכֹּהֲנִיםtake itיִקְחוּfor themselves,לָהֶםeachאִישׁfromמֵאֵתhis acquaintance,מַכָּרוֹand let themוְהֵםrepairיְחַזְּקוּthe breachesבֶּדֶקof the house,הַבַּיִתwhereverלְכֹל אֲשֶׁר שָׁםa breachבָּדֶקis found.”יִמָּצֵא
And it happenedוַיְהִיin yearבִּשְׁנַתtwentyעֶשְׂרִיםthreeוְשָׁלֹשׁyearsשָׁנָהof KingלַמֶּלֶךְJoashיְהוֹאָשׁthat the priestsהַכֹּהֲנִיםhad notלֹאrepairedחִזְּקוּthe breachesבֶּדֶקof the house.הַבָּיִת
KingהַמֶּלֶךְJoashיְהוֹאָשׁcalledוַיִּקְרָאJehoiadaלִיהוֹיָדָעthe priestהַכֹּהֵןand the priestsוְלַכֹּהֲנִיםand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵהֶם“Whyמַדּוּעַare you notאֵינְכֶםrepairingמְחַזְּקִיםthe breachesבֶּדֶקof the house?הַבָּיִתNowוְעַתָּהdo notאַלtakeתִּקְחוּsilverכֶסֶףfromמֵאֵתyour acquaintances,מַכָּרֵיכֶםbutכִּיfor the breachesלְבֶדֶקof the houseהַבַּיִתyou are to give it.”תִּתְּנֻהוּ
The priestsהַכֹּהֲנִיםagreedוַיֵּאֹתוּnotלְבִלְתִּיto takeקְחַתsilverכֶּסֶףfromמֵאֵתthe peopleהָעָםand notוּלְבִלְתִּיto repairחַזֵּקthe breachesבֶּדֶקof the house.הַבָּיִת
Jehoiadaיְהוֹיָדָעthe priestהַכֹּהֵןtookוַיִּקַּחaאֶחָדchestאֲרוֹןand boredוַיִּקֹּבa holeחֹרin its lidבְּדַלְתּוֹand putוַיִּתֵּןitאֹתוֹbesideאֵצֶלthe altar,הַמִּזְבֵּחַon the rightמִיָּמִיןas one entersבְּבוֹא אִישׁthe houseבֵּיתof YHWH;יְהוָהand the priestsוְ הַכֹּהֲנִיםwho guardedשֹׁמְרֵיthe thresholdהַסַּףwould putנָתְנוּthereשָׁמָּהallכָּלthe silverהַכֶּסֶףthat was broughtהַמּוּבָאinto the houseבֵיתof YHWH.יְהוָה
And it happened,וַיְהִיwhenever they sawכִּרְאוֹתָםthatכִּיthere was muchרַבsilverהַכֶּסֶףin the chest,בָּאָרוֹןthat the king’sהַמֶּלֶךְscribeסֹפֵרand the highוְ הַגָּדוֹלpriestהַכֹּהֵןwent upוַיַּעַלand tied it upוַיָּצֻרוּand countedוַיִּמְנוּthe silverהַכֶּסֶףthat was foundהַנִּמְצָאin the houseבֵיתof YHWH.יְהוָה
They would giveוְנָתְנוּthe silverהַכֶּסֶףthat had been weighed outהַמְתֻכָּןinto the handsעַל יְדֵיof those doingעֹשֵׂיthe work,הַמְּלָאכָהwho were appointedהַמֻּפְקָדִיםover the houseבֵּיתof YHWH;יְהוָהand they paid it outוַיּוֹצִיאֻהוּto the craftsmenלְחָרָשֵׁיin woodהָעֵץand to the buildersוְלַבֹּנִיםwho were workingהָעֹשִׂיםon the houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָה
and to the masonsוְלַגֹּדְרִיםand to the stonecutters,וּלְחֹצְבֵי הָאֶבֶןand to buyוְלִקְנוֹתtimberעֵצִיםand quarriedמַחְצֵבstonesוְאַבְנֵיto repairלְחַזֵּקthe breachesבֶּדֶקof the houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָהand for allוּלְכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרwas spentיֵצֵאonעַלthe houseהַבַּיִתto repair it.לְחָזְקָה
Butאַךְthere were notלֹאmadeיֵעָשֶׂהfor the houseבֵּיתof YHWHיְהוָהbasinsסִפּוֹתof silver,כֶּסֶףtongs,מְזַמְּרוֹתbowls,מִזְרָקוֹתtrumpets,חֲצֹצְרוֹתanyכָּלvesselsכְּלִיof goldזָהָבor vesselsוּכְלִיof silver,כָסֶףfromמִןthe silverהַכֶּסֶףthat was broughtהַמּוּבָאinto the houseבֵיתof YHWH;יְהוָה
forכִּיto those doingלְעֹשֵׂיthe workהַמְּלָאכָהthey would give it,יִתְּנֻהוּand they repairedוְחִזְּקוּwith itבוֹthe houseבֵּיתof YHWH.יְהוָה
They did notוְלֹאask an accountingיְחַשְּׁבוּfrom the menהָאֲנָשִׁיםinto whose handאֲשֶׁר עַל יָדָםthey gaveיִתְּנוּthe silverהַכֶּסֶףto giveלָתֵתto those doingלְעֹשֵׂיthe work,הַמְּלָאכָהforכִּיtheyהֵםwere actingעֹשִׂיםwith faithfulness.בֶאֱמֻנָה
The silverכֶּסֶףof the guilt offeringsאָשָׁםand the silverוְכֶסֶףof the sin offeringsחַטָּאוֹתwas notלֹאbroughtיוּבָאinto the houseבֵּיתof YHWH;יְהוָהit belongedיִהְיוּto the priests.לַכֹּהֲנִים
ThenאָזHazaelחֲזָאֵלkingמֶלֶךְof Aramאֲרָםwent upיַעֲלֶהand foughtוַיִּלָּחֶםagainst Gathעַל גַּתand captured it;וַיִּלְכְּדָהּand Hazaelוַ חֲזָאֵלsetיָּשֶׂםhis faceפָּנָיוto go upלַעֲלוֹתagainstעַלJerusalem.יְרוּשָׁלִָם
Joashיְהוֹאָשׁkingמֶלֶךְof Judahיְהוּדָהtookוַיִּקַּחallכָּלthe holy thingsהַקֳּדָשִׁיםthatאֲשֶׁרJehoshaphatיְהוֹשָׁפָטand Joramוִיהוֹרָםand Ahaziah,וַאֲחַזְיָהוּhis fathers,אֲבֹתָיוkingsמַלְכֵיof Judah,יְהוּדָהhad consecrated,הִקְדִּישׁוּand his own holy things,וְאֶת קֳדָשָׁיוand allוְאֵת כָּלthe goldהַזָּהָבthat was foundהַנִּמְצָאin the treasuriesבְּאֹצְרוֹתof the houseבֵּיתof YHWHיְהוָהand of the houseוּבֵיתof the king,הַמֶּלֶךְand sent itוַיִּשְׁלַחto Hazaelלַחֲזָאֵלkingמֶלֶךְof Aram;אֲרָםand he went awayוַיַּעַלfromמֵעַלJerusalem.יְרוּשָׁלִָם
