Jacob

Jacob, the younger son of Isaac and Rebekah, twin brother of Esau and father of the twelve tribes. In Hebrew "Yaakov" sounds like "heel" and "supplant" (Genesis 25:26; 27:36). God later gave him the name Israel; the name also stands for his descendants, the people of Israel.

El, God, god

"El", an ancient Hebrew word for "God". Alone or with another title it is a name of the God of Israel: El Elyon (God Most High), El Shaddai (God Almighty). Neighboring peoples used the same word for their gods; then this translation writes "god" in lower case. It also means "mighty".

Translation note

“A remnant will return” is the name of Isaiah’s son, Shear-jashub (7:3). For “Valiant El,” compare 9:6.

The context

20And it will happen on that day that the remnant of Israel and the escaped of the house of Jacob will no longer lean on the one who struck them, but will lean on YHWH, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

21 · This verse (above)

22For even if your people, Israel, were like the sand of the sea, a remnant of it will return; destruction is decreed, overflowing with righteousness.
