They invitedוַתִּקְרֶאןָthe peopleלָעָםto the sacrificesלְזִבְחֵיof their gods,אֱלֹהֵיהֶןand the peopleוַ הָעָםateיֹּאכַלand bowed downוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲוּוּto their gods.לֵאלֹהֵיהֶן
Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלjoined itselfוַיִּצָּמֶדto Baal-peor,לְבַעַל פְּעוֹרand the angerוַ אַףof YHWHיְהוָהburnedיִּחַרagainst Israel.בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“Takeקַחallכָּלthe headsרָאשֵׁיof the peopleהָעָםand hangוְהוֹקַעthemאוֹתָםfor YHWHלַיהוָהin front ofנֶגֶדthe sun,הַשָּׁמֶשׁand the burningוְ חֲרוֹןangerאַףof YHWHיְהוָהwill turn awayיָשֹׁבfrom Israel.”מִיִּשְׂרָאֵל
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto the judgesאֶל שֹׁפְטֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵל“Each of you killהִרְגוּ אִישׁhis menאֲנָשָׁיוwho have joined themselvesהַנִּצְמָדִיםto Baal-peor.”לְבַעַל פְּעוֹר
And look,וְהִנֵּהa manאִישׁof the sonsמִבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלcameבָּאand brought nearוַיַּקְרֵבto his brothersאֶל אֶחָיוthe Midianite womanהַמִּדְיָנִיתbefore the eyesלְעֵינֵיof Mosesמֹשֶׁהand before the eyesוּלְעֵינֵיof the wholeכָּלcommunityעֲדַתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלwhile theyוְהֵמָּהwere weepingבֹכִיםat the entranceפֶּתַחof the tentאֹהֶלof meeting.מוֹעֵד
When Phinehasוַ פִּינְחָסsonבֶּןof Eleazar,אֶלְעָזָרsonבֶּןof Aaronאַהֲרֹןthe priest,הַכֹּהֵןsaw it,יַּרְאhe roseוַיָּקָםfrom the midstמִתּוֹךְof the communityהָעֵדָהand tookוַיִּקַּחa spearרֹמַחin his hand.בְּיָדוֹ
He wentוַיָּבֹאafterאַחַרthe manאִישׁof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלintoאֶלthe alcoveהַקֻּבָּהand piercedוַיִּדְקֹרboth of them,שְׁנֵיהֶםthe manאִישׁof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלand the woman,וְ הָאִשָּׁהthroughאֶלher belly.קֳבָתָהּAnd the plagueוַ הַמַּגֵּפָהwas held backתֵּעָצַרfromמֵעַלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
Those who diedוַיִּהְיוּ הַמֵּתִיםin the plagueבַּמַּגֵּפָהwere twenty-fourאַרְבָּעָה וְעֶשְׂרִיםthousand.אָלֶף
YHWHיְהוָהspokeוַיְדַבֵּרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁהsaying,לֵּאמֹר
“Phinehasפִּינְחָסsonבֶּןof Eleazar,אֶלְעָזָרsonבֶּןof Aaronאַהֲרֹןthe priest,הַכֹּהֵןhas turned backהֵשִׁיבmy wrathחֲמָתִיfromמֵעַלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwhen he was jealousבְּקַנְאוֹwith my jealousyאֶת קִנְאָתִיamong them,בְּתוֹכָםand I did notוְלֹאmake an end ofכִלִּיתִיthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלin my jealousy.בְּקִנְאָתִי
Thereforeלָכֵןsay:אֱמֹרLook, Iהִנְנִיam givingנֹתֵןhimלוֹmy covenantבְּרִיתִיof peace.שָׁלוֹם
It will beוְהָיְתָהfor himלּוֹand for his offspringוּלְזַרְעוֹafter himאַחֲרָיוa covenantבְּרִיתof priesthoodכְּהֻנַּתforever,עוֹלָםbecauseתַּחַת אֲשֶׁרhe was jealousקִנֵּאfor his Elohimלֵאלֹהָיוand made expiationוַיְכַפֵּרforעַלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel.”יִשְׂרָאֵל

“Harassצָרוֹרthe Midianitesהַמִּדְיָנִיםand strikeוְהִכִּיתֶםthem,אוֹתָם
forכִּיtheyהֵםare harassingצֹרְרִיםyouלָכֶםwith their deceptionsבְּנִכְלֵיהֶםwith whichאֲשֶׁרthey deceivedנִכְּלוּyouלָכֶםin the matterעַל דְּבַרof Peorפְּעוֹרand in the matterוְעַל דְּבַרof Cozbi,כָּזְבִּיdaughterבַתof a chiefנְשִׂיאof Midian,מִדְיָןtheir sister,אֲחֹתָםwho was struckהַמֻּכָּהon the dayבְיוֹםof the plagueהַמַּגֵּפָהon account ofעַל דְּבַרPeor.”פְּעוֹר
