Historical and cultural background

Samuel anoints Saul “as leader over his inheritance” (1 Samuel 10:1), and later announces that YHWH has commanded another, “a man after his own heart”, to be leader over his people (13:14).

How we translate it

“Leader” 36 times and “leaders” 4, for the one who goes at the head; it is distinct from שַׂר, ‘official’ or ‘prince’, and from נָשִׂיא, ‘chief’. Other contexts ask for another form: “chief overseer” (Jeremiah 20:1), “A prince” (Proverbs 28:16) and, in the plural, “noble things” (Proverbs 8:6).
