Now the Philistinesוּפְלִשְׁתִּיםhad takenלָקְחוּthe arkאֵת אֲרוֹןof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםand they brought itוַיְבִאֻהוּfrom Eben-ezerמֵאֶבֶן הָעֵזֶרto Ashdod.אַשְׁדּוֹדָה
And the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםtookוַיִּקְחוּthe arkאֶת אֲרוֹןof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםand broughtוַיָּבִיאוּitאֹתוֹinto the houseבֵּיתof Dagonדָּגוֹןand setוַיַּצִּיגוּitאֹתוֹbesideאֵצֶלDagon.דָּגוֹן
And the people of Ashdodאַשְׁדּוֹדִיםrose earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּמוּthe next day,מִמָּחֳרָתand there wasוְהִנֵּהDagon,דָגוֹןfallenנֹפֵלon his faceלְפָנָיוto the groundאַרְצָהbeforeלִפְנֵיthe arkאֲרוֹןof YHWH.יְהוָהSo they tookוַיִּקְחוּDagonאֶת דָּגוֹןand putוַיָּשִׁבוּhimאֹתוֹback in his place.לִמְקוֹמוֹ
And they rose earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּמוּin the morningבַבֹּקֶרthe next day,מִמָּחֳרָתand there wasוְהִנֵּהDagon,דָגוֹןfallenנֹפֵלon his faceלְפָנָיוto the groundאַרְצָהbeforeלִפְנֵיthe arkאֲרוֹןof YHWH,יְהוָהand the headוְרֹאשׁof Dagonדָּגוֹןand bothוּשְׁתֵּיpalmsכַּפּוֹתof his handsיָדָיוwerecut offכְּרֻתוֹתonאֶלthe threshold;הַמִּפְתָּןonlyרַקDagonדָּגוֹןwas leftנִשְׁאַרto him.עָלָיו
That is whyעַל כֵּןthe priestsכֹהֲנֵיof Dagonדָגוֹןand allוְכָלwho enterהַבָּאִיםthe houseבֵּיתof Dagonדָּגוֹןdo notלֹאtreadיִדְרְכוּon the thresholdעַל מִפְתַּןof Dagonדָּגוֹןin Ashdodבְּאַשְׁדּוֹדtoעַדthisהַזֶּהday.הַיּוֹם
And the handיַדof YHWHיְהוָהwas heavyוַתִּכְבַּדonאֶלthe people of Ashdod,הָאַשְׁדּוֹדִיםand he devastated themוַיְשִׁמֵּםand struckוַיַּךְthemאֹתָםwith tumors,בַּטְּחֹרִיםAshdodאֶת אַשְׁדּוֹדand its territories.וְאֶת גְּבוּלֶיהָ
And the menאַנְשֵׁיof Ashdodאַשְׁדּוֹדsawוַיִּרְאוּthatכִּיit wasso,כֵןand they said,וְאָמְרוּ“The arkאֲרוֹןof the Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלshall notלֹאstayיֵשֵׁבwith us,עִמָּנוּforכִּיhis handיָדוֹis hardקָשְׁתָהon usעָלֵינוּand onוְעַלDagonדָּגוֹןour god.”אֱלֹהֵינוּ
So they sentוַיִּשְׁלְחוּand gatheredוַיַּאַסְפוּallאֶת כָּלthe lordsסַרְנֵיof the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםto themאֲלֵיהֶםand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“Whatמַהshall we doנַּעֲשֶׂהwith the arkלַאֲרוֹןof the Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel?”יִשְׂרָאֵלAnd they said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“Let the arkאֲרוֹןof the Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלbe moved aroundיִסֹּבto Gath.”גַּתSo they movedוַיַּסֵּבּוּthe arkאֶת אֲרוֹןof the Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
And it happened,וַיְהִיafterאַחֲרֵיthey had movedהֵסַבּוּit,אֹתוֹthat the handוַ יַדof YHWHיְהוָהwasתְּהִיagainst the cityבָּעִירwitha veryמְאֹדgreatגְּדוֹלָהconfusion;מְהוּמָהand he struckוַיַּךְthe menאֶת אַנְשֵׁיof the city,הָעִירfrom the smallמִקָּטֹןtoוְעַדthe great,גָּדוֹלand tumors broke outוַיִּשָּׂתְרוּ טְחֹרִיםon them.לָהֶם
So they sentוַיְשַׁלְּחוּthe arkאֶת אֲרוֹןof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםto Ekron.עֶקְרוֹןAnd it happened,וַיְהִיasכְּthe arkאֲרוֹןof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםcameבוֹאto Ekron,עֶקְרוֹןthat the Ekronitesהָעֶקְרֹנִיםcried out,וַיִּזְעֲקוּsaying,לֵאמֹר“They have movedהֵסַבּוּthe arkאֶת אֲרוֹןof the Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלaround to meאֵלַיto put me to deathלַהֲמִיתֵנִיand my people!”וְאֶת עַמִּי
So they sentוַיִּשְׁלְחוּand gatheredוַיַּאַסְפוּallאֶת כָּלthe lordsסַרְנֵיof the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“Send awayשַׁלְּחוּthe arkאֶת אֲרוֹןof the Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand let it returnוְיָשֹׁבto its place,לִמְקֹמוֹso that it does notוְלֹאput me to death,יָמִית אֹתִיand my people.”וְאֶת עַמִּיForכִּיthere wasהָיְתָהa deathlyמָוֶתconfusionמְהוּמַתthroughoutבְּכָלthe city;הָעִירthe handיַדof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםwas veryמְאֹדheavyכָּבְדָהthere.שָׁם
And the menוְהָאֲנָשִׁיםwhoאֲשֶׁרdid notלֹאdieמֵתוּwere struckהֻכּוּwith tumors,בַּטְּחֹרִיםand the cryוַ שַׁוְעַתof the cityהָעִירwent upתַּעַלto the heavens.הַשָּׁמָיִם
