1 Samuel 4

And the wordדְבַרof Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלcameוַיְהִיto allלְכָלIsrael.יִשְׂרָאֵלAnd Israelוַ יִשְׂרָאֵלwent outיֵּצֵאto meetלִקְרַאתthe Philistinesפְּלִשְׁתִּיםfor war;לַמִּלְחָמָהthey campedוַיַּחֲנוּbesideעַלEben-ezer,הָאֶבֶן הָעֵזֶרand the Philistinesוּפְלִשְׁתִּיםcampedחָנוּat Aphek.בַאֲפֵק

And the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםdrew up their linesוַיַּעַרְכוּto meetלִקְרַאתIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלand the warהַמִּלְחָמָהspread out,וַתִּטֹּשׁand Israelוַ יִשְׂרָאֵלwas struck downיִּנָּגֶףbeforeלִפְנֵיthe Philistines,פְלִשְׁתִּיםwho struckוַיַּכּוּin the battle lineבַמַּעֲרָכָהin the fieldבַּשָּׂדֶהabout fourכְּאַרְבַּעַתthousandאֲלָפִיםmen.אִישׁ

And the peopleהָעָםcameוַיָּבֹאtoאֶלthe camp,הַמַּחֲנֶהand the eldersוַ זִקְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלsaid,יֹּאמְרוּ“Whyלָמָּהhas YHWHיְהוָהstruck us downנְגָפָנוּtodayהַיּוֹםbeforeלִפְנֵיthe Philistines?פְלִשְׁתִּיםLet us takeנִקְחָהto ourselvesאֵלֵינוּfrom Shilohמִשִּׁלֹהthe arkאֶת אֲרוֹןof the covenantבְּרִיתof YHWH,יְהוָהso that it may comeוְיָבֹאamong usבְקִרְבֵּנוּand save usוְיֹשִׁעֵנוּfrom the handמִכַּףof our enemies.”אֹיְבֵינוּ

So the peopleהָעָםsentוַיִּשְׁלַחto Shiloh,שִׁלֹהand they carriedוַיִּשְׂאוּfrom thereמִשָּׁםthe arkאֵת אֲרוֹןof the covenantבְּרִיתof YHWHיְהוָהTsevaot,צְבָאוֹתwho sitsיֹשֵׁבonthe cherubim;הַכְּרֻבִיםand thereוְשָׁםwerethe twoשְׁנֵיsonsבְנֵיof Eliעֵלִיwithעִםthe arkאֲרוֹןof the covenantבְּרִיתof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםHophniחָפְנִיand Phinehas.וּפִינְחָס

And it happened,וַיְהִיasכְּthe arkאֲרוֹןof the covenantבְּרִיתof YHWHיְהוָהcameבוֹאintoאֶלthe camp,הַמַּחֲנֶהthat allוַ כָלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלshoutedיָּרִעוּa greatגְדוֹלָהshout,תְּרוּעָהand the earthוַ הָאָרֶץwas in an uproar.תֵּהֹם

And the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםheardוַיִּשְׁמְעוּthe soundאֶת קוֹלof the shoutהַתְּרוּעָהand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“Whatמֶהisthe soundקוֹלof thisהַזֹּאתgreatהַגְּדוֹלָהshoutהַתְּרוּעָהin the campבְּמַחֲנֵהof the Hebrews?”הָעִבְרִיםAnd they learnedוַיֵּדְעוּthatכִּיthe arkאֲרוֹןof YHWHיְהוָהhad comeבָּאintoאֶלthe camp.הַמַּחֲנֶה

And the Philistinesהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיםwere afraid,וַיִּרְאוּforכִּיthey said,אָמְרוּ“Elohimאֱלֹהִיםhas comeבָּאintoאֶלthe camp!”הַמַּחֲנֶהAnd they said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“Woeאוֹיto us!לָנוּForכִּיnothingלֹאlike thisכָּזֹאתhas happenedהָיְתָהbefore.אֶתְמוֹל שִׁלְשֹׁם

Woeאוֹיto us!לָנוּWhoמִיwill deliver usיַצִּילֵנוּfrom the handמִיַּדof theseהָאֵלֶּהmightyהָאַדִּירִיםgods?הָאֱלֹהִיםTheseאֵלֶּהareהֵםthe godsהָאֱלֹהִיםwho struckהַמַּכִּיםEgyptאֶת מִצְרַיִםwith every kindבְּכָלof blowמַכָּהin the wilderness.בַּמִּדְבָּר

Be strongהִתְחַזְּקוּand beוִהְיוּmen,לַאֲנָשִׁיםPhilistines,פְּלִשְׁתִּיםso that you do notפֶּןserveתַּעַבְדוּthe Hebrewsלָעִבְרִיםasכַּאֲשֶׁרthey have servedעָבְדוּyou;לָכֶםbeוִהְיִיתֶםmenלַאֲנָשִׁיםand fight!”וְנִלְחַמְתֶּם

So the Philistinesפְלִשְׁתִּיםfought,וַיִּלָּחֲמוּand Israelוַ יִשְׂרָאֵלwas struck down,יִּנָּגֶףand they fledוַיָּנֻסוּeachאִישׁto his tent;לְאֹהָלָיוand the blowוַ הַמַּכָּהwasתְּהִיveryמְאֹדgreat,גְּדוֹלָהand there fellוַיִּפֹּלof Israelמִיִּשְׂרָאֵלthirtyשְׁלֹשִׁיםthousandאֶלֶףfoot soldiers.רַגְלִי

And the arkוַאֲרוֹןof Elohimאֱלֹהִיםwas taken,נִלְקָחand the twoוּשְׁנֵיsonsבְנֵיof Eliעֵלִיdied,מֵתוּHophniחָפְנִיand Phinehas.וּפִינְחָס

And a manאִישׁof Benjaminבִּנְיָמִןranוַיָּרָץfrom the battle lineמֵהַמַּעֲרָכָהand cameוַיָּבֹאto Shilohשִׁלֹהthatהַהוּאday,בַּיּוֹםwith his clothesוּמַדָּיוtornקְרֻעִיםand earthוַאֲדָמָהonעַלhis head.רֹאשׁוֹ

He came,וַיָּבוֹאand there wasוְהִנֵּהEliעֵלִיsittingיֹשֵׁבonעַלthe seatהַכִּסֵּאbesideיַדthe road,דֶּרֶךְwatching,מְצַפֶּהforכִּיhis heartלִבּוֹwasהָיָהtremblingחָרֵדforעַלthe arkאֲרוֹןof Elohim.הָאֱלֹהִיםAnd the manוְהָאִישׁcameבָּאto tellלְהַגִּידin the city,בָּעִירand allוַ כָּלthe cityהָעִירcried out.תִּזְעַק

And Eliעֵלִיheardוַיִּשְׁמַעthe soundאֶת קוֹלof the outcryהַצְּעָקָהand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Whatמֶהisthe soundקוֹלof thisהַזֶּהtumult?”הֶהָמוֹןAnd the manוְהָאִישׁhurriedמִהַרand cameוַיָּבֹאand toldוַיַּגֵּדEli.לְעֵלִי

Now Eliוְעֵלִיwas ninetyבֶּן תִּשְׁעִים-eightוּשְׁמֹנֶהyears old,שָׁנָהand his eyesוְעֵינָיוwere fixed,קָמָהand he could notוְלֹא יָכוֹלsee.לִרְאוֹת

And the manהָאִישׁsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלEli,עֵלִי“Iאָנֹכִיam the one who has comeהַבָּאfromמִןthe battle line;הַמַּעֲרָכָהIוַאֲנִיfledנַסְתִּיfromמִןthe battle lineהַמַּעֲרָכָהtoday.”הַיּוֹםAnd he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Howמֶהdid the matter go,הָיָה הַדָּבָרmy son?”בְּנִי

And the one who brought the newsהַמְבַשֵּׂרansweredוַיַּעַןand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלhas fledנָסbeforeלִפְנֵיthe Philistines,פְלִשְׁתִּיםand alsoוְגַםthere has beenהָיְתָהa greatגְדוֹלָהslaughterמַגֵּפָהamong the people,בָעָםand alsoוְגַםyour twoשְׁנֵיsonsבָנֶיךָare dead,מֵתוּHophniחָפְנִיand Phinehas,וּפִינְחָסand the arkוַאֲרוֹןof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםhas been taken.”נִלְקָחָה

And it happened,וַיְהִיwhen he mentionedכְּהַזְכִּירוֹthe arkאֶת אֲרוֹןof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםthat he fellוַיִּפֹּלfrom offמֵעַלthe seatהַכִּסֵּאbackwardאֲחֹרַנִּיתby the sideבְּעַד יַדof the gate,הַשַּׁעַרand his neckמַפְרַקְתּוֹwas brokenוַתִּשָּׁבֵרand he died,וַיָּמֹתforכִּיthe manהָאִישׁwas oldזָקֵןand heavy.וְכָבֵדHeוְהוּאhad judgedשָׁפַטIsraelאֶת יִשְׂרָאֵלfortyאַרְבָּעִיםyears.שָׁנָה

Now his daughter-in-law,וְכַלָּתוֹthe wifeאֵשֶׁתof Phinehas,פִּינְחָסwas pregnant,הָרָהabout to give birth.לָלַתAnd she heardוַתִּשְׁמַעthe newsאֶת הַשְּׁמֻעָהthatאֶלthe arkאֲרוֹןof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםhad been takenהִלָּקַחand that her father-in-lawוּ חָמִיהָand her husbandוְאִישָׁהּwere dead,מֵתand she crouched downוַתִּכְרַעand gave birth,וַתֵּלֶדforכִּיher painsצִרֶיהָcame overנֶהֶפְכוּher.עָלֶיהָ

And about the timeוּכְעֵתof her deathמוּתָהּthe women standingהַנִּצָּבוֹתby herעָלֶיהָsaid,וַתְּדַבֵּרְנָה“Do notאַלbe afraid,תִּירְאִיforכִּיyou have given birth toיָלָדְתְּa son.”בֵןBut she did notוְלֹאanswerעָנְתָהorוְלֹאsetשָׁתָהher heart to it.לִבָּהּ

And she calledוַתִּקְרָאthe boyלַנַּעַרIchabod,אִי כָבוֹדsaying,לֵאמֹר“The gloryכָבוֹדhas gone into exileגָּלָהfrom Israel,”מִיִּשְׂרָאֵלbecauseאֶלthe arkאֲרוֹןof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםhad been takenהִלָּקַחand because ofוְאֶלher father-in-lawחָמִיהָand her husband.וְאִישָׁהּ

And she said,וַתֹּאמֶר“The gloryכָבוֹדhas gone into exileגָּלָהfrom Israel,מִיִּשְׂרָאֵלforכִּיthe arkאֲרוֹןof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםhas been taken.”נִלְקַח
