And YHWHוַ יְהוָהspokeיְדַבֵּרtoאֶלJoshua,יְהוֹשֻׁעַsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Speakדַּבֵּרtoאֶלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלsaying,לֵאמֹר‘Set apartתְּנוּfor yourselvesלָכֶםthe citiesעָרֵיof refuge,הַמִּקְלָטof whichאֲשֶׁרI spokeדִּבַּרְתִּיto youאֲלֵיכֶםthroughבְּיַדMoses,מֹשֶׁה
so thatלָthe manslayerרוֹצֵחַwho mortally strikes a personמַכֵּה נֶפֶשׁinadvertently,בִּשְׁגָגָהunknowingly,בִּבְלִי דָעַתmay fleeנוּסthere;שָׁמָּהand they shall beוְהָיוּfor youלָכֶםa refugeלְמִקְלָטfrom the avengerמִגֹּאֵלof blood.הַדָּם
And he shall fleeוְנָסtoאֶלoneאַחַתof theseמֵ הָאֵלֶּהcitiesהֶעָרִיםand standוְעָמַדat the entranceפֶּתַחof the gateשַׁעַרof the city,הָעִירand speakוְדִבֶּרhis wordsאֶת דְּבָרָיוin the earsבְּאָזְנֵיof the eldersזִקְנֵיof thatהַהִיאcity;הָעִירand they shall take himוְאָסְפוּ אֹתוֹinto the cityהָעִירָהto themselves,אֲלֵיהֶםand giveוְנָתְנוּhimלוֹa place,מָקוֹםand he shall liveוְיָשַׁבwith them.עִמָּם
And ifוְכִיthe avengerגֹּאֵלof bloodהַדָּםpursuesיִרְדֹּףhim,אַחֲרָיוthey shall notוְלֹאhand overיַסְגִּרוּthe manslayerהָרֹצֵחַinto his hand,בְּיָדוֹbecauseכִּיhe struckהִכָּהhis neighborרֵעֵהוּunknowingly,בִבְלִי דַעַתand did notוְלֹאhateשֹׂנֵאhimלוֹbeforehand.מִתְּמוֹל שִׁלְשׁוֹם
And he shall liveוְיָשַׁבin thatבָּ הַהִיאcityעִירuntilעַדhe standsעָמְדוֹbeforeלִפְנֵיthe communityהָעֵדָהfor judgment,לַמִּשְׁפָּטuntilעַדthe deathמוֹתof the highהַגָּדוֹלpriestהַכֹּהֵןwhoאֲשֶׁרisיִהְיֶהin thoseבַּ הָהֵםdays.יָּמִיםThenאָזthe manslayerהָרוֹצֵחַshall returnיָשׁוּבand comeוּבָאtoאֶלhis cityעִירוֹand toוְאֶלhis house,בֵּיתוֹtoאֶלthe cityהָעִירfrom whichאֲשֶׁר מִשָּׁםhe fled.’”נָס
So they consecratedוַיַּקְדִּשׁוּKedeshקֶדֶשׁin Galileeבַּגָּלִילin the hill countryבְּהַרof Naphtali,נַפְתָּלִיand Shechemוְאֶת שְׁכֶםin the hill countryבְּהַרof Ephraim,אֶפְרָיִםand Kiriath-arbaוְאֶת קִרְיַת אַרְבַּע(thatהִיאisHebron)חֶבְרוֹןin the hill countryבְּהַרof Judah.יְהוּדָה
And beyondוּמֵעֵבֶרthe Jordanלְיַרְדֵּןat Jericho,יְרִיחוֹto the east,מִזְרָחָהthey gaveנָתְנוּBezerבֶּצֶרin the wilderness,בַּמִּדְבָּרon the plateau,בַּמִּישֹׁרfrom the tribeמִמַּטֵּהof Reuben;רְאוּבֵןand Ramothוְאֶת רָאמֹתin Gileadבַּגִּלְעָדfrom the tribeמִמַּטֵּהof Gad;גָדand Golanוְאֶת גּוֹלָןin Bashanבַּבָּשָׁןfrom the tribeמִמַּטֵּהof Manasseh.מְנַשֶּׁה
Theseאֵלֶּהwereהָיוּthe appointedהַמּוּעָדָהcitiesעָרֵיfor allלְכֹלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלand for the resident alienוְלַגֵּרwho residesהַגָּרamong them,בְּתוֹכָםthatלָanyoneכָּלwho mortally strikes a personמַכֵּה נֶפֶשׁinadvertentlyבִּשְׁגָגָהmight fleeנוּסthere,שָׁמָּהand notוְלֹאdieיָמוּתby the handבְּיַדof the avengerגֹּאֵלof blood,הַדָּםuntilעַדhe standsעָמְדוֹbeforeלִפְנֵיthe community.הָעֵדָה
