1Jordan
Today: Jordan River: Israel, West Bank, Jordan, Dead Sea
Israel's main river; it flows from Mount Hermon in the north, through the Sea of Galilee, to the Dead Sea.
Israel crossed it on dry ground to enter the promised land (Josh 3:17). Naaman was healed in it (2 Kgs 5:14), and Jesus was immersed in it (Matt 3:13).
2Jericho
Today: Jericho (Ariha), West Bank
A city in the Jordan valley, about 15 miles (25 km) northeast of Jerusalem and not far from the river.
It was the first city Israel took in Canaan; its walls fell (Josh 6:20). Centuries later Jesus passed through Jericho and saved Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10).
3Gilead
Today: northern Jordan, east of the Jordan River
A hill region east of the Jordan River, in present-day Jordan.
Reuben, Gad and half of Manasseh settled there (Num 32:1, 33). Jephthah was from Gilead (Judg 11:1). Jeremiah spoke of its balm (Jer 8:22).
4Bashan
Today: southern Syria and the Golan Heights
A fertile region east of the Sea of Galilee, reaching to Mount Hermon, now southern Syria and northwest Jordan.
Israel defeated King Og there (Num 21:33-35). It was known for its cattle (Ps 22:12).
The context
7So they consecrated Kedesh in Galilee in the hill country of Naphtali, and Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim, and Kiriath-arba (that is Hebron) in the hill country of Judah.
8 · This verse (above)
9These were the appointed cities for all the sons of Israel and for the resident alien who resides among them, that anyone who mortally strikes a person inadvertently might flee there, and not die by the hand of the avenger of blood, until he stands before the community.
