Translation note
“Devoted to destruction” translates cherem: something or someone handed over to God with no turning back. It can be understood that, of a person, it refers to someone condemned to death for a grave crime (Exodus 22:20) or in a war commanded by God (Joshua 6:17), not to human sacrifices, which the law forbids (Leviticus 18:21).
The context
28But nothing completely devoted that a man completely devotes to YHWH of all that he has, whether human being or beast or field of his possession, shall be sold or redeemed; every devoted thing is most holy to YHWH.
29 · This verse (above)
30And every tithe of the land, of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is YHWH’s; it is holy to YHWH.
