Matthew 25:14-30

14For it is just as a man going on a journey called his own slaves and handed over to them his possessions. 15And to one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his own ability; and he went on his journey. At once 16the one who had received the five talents went and worked with them and gained another five. 17In the same way the one with the two gained another two. 18But the one who had received the one went away, dug in the ground, and hid his master’s money. 19Now after a long time the master of those slaves comes and settles accounts with them. 20And the one who had received the five talents came up and brought another five talents, saying, ‘Master, you handed over to me five talents; look, I have gained another five talents.’ 21His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave; you were faithful over a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ 22And the one with the two talents also came up and said, ‘Master, you handed over to me two talents; look, I have gained another two talents.’ 23His master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful slave; you were faithful over a few things, I will put you in charge of many things; enter into the joy of your master.’ 24And the one who had received the one talent also came up and said, ‘Master, I knew you, that you are a hard man, reaping where you did not sow and gathering where you did not scatter; 25and being afraid, I went off and hid your talent in the ground; look, you have what is yours.’ 26But his master answered him, ‘Wicked and lazy slave! You knew that I reap where I did not sow and gather where I did not scatter? 27Then you ought to have put my money with the bankers, and when I came I would have received back what is mine with interest. 28So take the talent from him and give it to the one who has the ten talents. 29For to everyone who has more will be given, and he will have an abundance; but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away from him. 30And throw the worthless slave into the outer darkness; there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

Luke 19:11-27

11And as they were listening to these things, he went on and told a parable, because he was near Jerusalem, and they thought that the kingdom of God was going to appear immediately. 12So he said, “A certain man of noble birth went to a distant country to receive for himself a kingdom and then return. 13And calling ten of his slaves, he gave them ten minas and said to them, ‘Do business while I am coming back.’ 14But his citizens hated him and sent a delegation after him, saying, ‘We do not want this man to reign over us.’ 15And it happened, when he returned, having received the kingdom, that he ordered these slaves, to whom he had given the money, to be called to him, so that he might know what they had gained by doing business. 16And the first came, saying, ‘Master, your mina has made ten minas more.’ 17And he said to him, ‘Well done, good slave! Because you have been faithful in a very little, have authority over ten cities.’ 18And the second came, saying, ‘Your mina, Master, has made five minas.’ 19And he said to this one also, ‘And you, be over five cities.’ 20And the other came, saying, ‘Master, look, here is your mina, which I kept laid away in a cloth; 21for I was afraid of you, because you are a harsh man: you take what you did not put down, and you reap what you did not sow.’ 22He says to him, ‘Out of your own mouth I will judge you, wicked slave! You knew that I am a harsh man, taking what I did not put down and reaping what I did not sow? 23Then why did you not put my money in the bank? And I, at my coming, would have collected it with interest.’ 24And to those standing by he said, ‘Take the mina from him and give it to the one who has the ten minas.’ 25And they said to him, ‘Master, he has ten minas!’ 26‘I tell you that to everyone who has, more will be given; but from the one who does not have, even what he has will be taken away. 27But these enemies of mine, who did not want me to reign over them, bring here and slaughter them before me.’”

The context
