The sonsלִבְנֵיof Reubenרְאוּבֵןand the sonsוְלִבְנֵיof Gadגָדhadהָיָהmuchרַבlivestock,וּמִקְנֶהveryמְאֹדnumerous;עָצוּםand they sawוַיִּרְאוּthe landאֶרֶץof Jazerיַעְזֵרand the landוְ אֶרֶץof Gilead,גִּלְעָדand look,וְהִנֵּהthe placeהַמָּקוֹםwas a placeמְקוֹםfor livestock.מִקְנֶה
The sonsבְנֵיof Gadגָדand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Reubenרְאוּבֵןcameוַיָּבֹאוּand saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto Mosesאֶל מֹשֶׁהand to Eleazarוְאֶל אֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןand to the chiefsוְאֶל נְשִׂיאֵיof the community,הָעֵדָהsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Ataroth,עֲטָרוֹתDibon,וְדִיבֹןJazer,וְיַעְזֵרNimrah,וְנִמְרָהHeshbon,וְחֶשְׁבּוֹןElealeh,וְאֶלְעָלֵהSebam,וּשְׂבָםNebo,וּנְבוֹand Beon,וּבְעֹן
the landהָאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהstruckהִכָּהbeforeלִפְנֵיthe communityעֲדַתof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלisהִואa landאֶרֶץfor livestock,מִקְנֶהand your servantsוְלַעֲבָדֶיךָhave livestock.”מִקְנֶה
They said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“Ifאִםwe have foundמָצָאנוּfavorחֵןin your eyes,בְּעֵינֶיךָlet thisהַזֹּאתlandהָאָרֶץbe givenיֻתַּןto your servantsלַעֲבָדֶיךָas a possession;לַאֲחֻזָּהdo notאַלmake us crossתַּעֲבִרֵנוּthe Jordan.”הַיַּרְדֵּן
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto the sonsלִבְנֵיof Gadגָדand to the sonsוְלִבְנֵיof Reuben,רְאוּבֵן“Shall your brothersהַאַחֵיכֶםgoיָבֹאוּto the warלַמִּלְחָמָהwhile youוְאַתֶּםsitתֵּשְׁבוּhere?פֹה
Whyוְלָמָּהwould you discourageתְנִיאוּןthe heartלֵבof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלfrom crossing overמֵעֲבֹרintoאֶלthe landהָאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhas givenנָתַןthem?לָהֶם
Your fathersאֲבֹתֵיכֶםdidעָשׂוּsoכֹּהwhen I sentבְּשָׁלְחִיthemאֹתָםfrom Kadesh-barneaמִקָּדֵשׁ בַּרְנֵעַto seeלִרְאוֹתthe land.הָאָרֶץ
They went upוַיַּעֲלוּas far asעַדthe Valleyנַחַלof Eshcolאֶשְׁכּוֹלand sawוַיִּרְאוּthe land,הָאָרֶץand they discouragedוַיָּנִיאוּthe heartלֵבof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלso as notלְבִלְתִּיto goבֹאintoאֶלthe landהָאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad givenנָתַןthem.לָהֶם
YHWH’sיְהוָהangerאַףburnedוַיִּחַרon that day,בַּיּוֹם הַהוּאand he swore,וַיִּשָּׁבַעsaying,לֵאמֹר
‘The menהָאֲנָשִׁיםwho came upהָעֹלִיםfrom Egypt,מִמִּצְרַיִםfrom twentyמִבֶּן עֶשְׂרִיםyearsשָׁנָהold and upward,וָמַעְלָהshall notאִםseeיִרְאוּthe groundהָאֲדָמָהthatאֲשֶׁרI sworeנִשְׁבַּעְתִּיto Abraham,לְאַבְרָהָםto Isaac,לְיִצְחָקand to Jacob,וּלְיַעֲקֹבbecauseכִּיthey did notלֹאfully followמִלְאוּ אַחֲרָme;י
exceptבִּלְתִּיCalebכָּלֵבsonבֶּןof Jephunnehיְפֻנֶּהthe Kenizziteהַקְּנִזִּיand Joshuaוִיהוֹשֻׁעַsonבִּןof Nun,נוּןforכִּיthey have fully followedמִלְאוּ אַחֲרֵיYHWH.’יְהוָה
YHWH’sיְהוָהangerאַףburnedוַיִּחַרagainst Israel,בְּיִשְׂרָאֵלand he made them wanderוַיְנִעֵםin the wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּרfortyאַרְבָּעִיםyears,שָׁנָהuntilעַדthe wholeכָּלgenerationהַדּוֹרthat had doneהָעֹשֶׂהevilהָרַעin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof YHWHיְהוָהwas finished.תֹּם
And look,וְהִנֵּהyou have risenקַמְתֶּםin place ofתַּחַתyour fathers,אֲבֹתֵיכֶםa broodתַּרְבּוּתof sinfulחַטָּאִיםmen,אֲנָשִׁיםto addלִסְפּוֹתstill moreעוֹדtoעַלthe burningחֲרוֹןangerאַףof YHWHיְהוָהagainst Israel.אֶל יִשְׂרָאֵל
Ifכִּיyou turn awayתְשׁוּבֻןfrom following him,מֵאַחֲרָיוhe will againוְיָסַף עוֹדleave themלְהַנִּיחוֹin the wilderness,בַּמִּדְבָּרand you will destroyוְשִׁחַתֶּםallלְכָלthisהַזֶּהpeople.”הָעָם
They came nearוַיִּגְּשׁוּto himאֵלָיוand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“We will buildנִבְנֶהsheep pensגִּדְרֹת צֹאןhereפֹּהfor our livestockלְמִקְנֵנוּand citiesוְעָרִיםfor our little ones.לְטַפֵּנוּ
But weוַאֲנַחְנוּwill arm ourselvesנֵחָלֵץand go readyחֻשִׁיםbeforeלִפְנֵיthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלuntilעַד אֲשֶׁר אִםwe have brought themהֲבִיאֹנֻםto their place;אֶל מְקוֹמָםand our little onesוְ טַפֵּנוּshall dwellיָשַׁבin the fortifiedהַמִּבְצָרcitiesבְּעָרֵיbecause ofמִפְּנֵיthe inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵיof the land.הָאָרֶץ
We will notלֹאreturnנָשׁוּבto our housesאֶל בָּתֵּינוּuntilעַדthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלhave taken as inheritance,הִתְנַחֵלeachאִישׁhis inheritance.נַחֲלָתוֹ
Forכִּיwe will notלֹאinheritנִנְחַלwith themאִתָּםon the other sideמֵעֵבֶרof the Jordanלַיַּרְדֵּןand beyond,וָהָלְאָהbecauseכִּיour inheritanceנַחֲלָתֵנוּhas comeבָאָהto usאֵלֵינוּon this sideמֵעֵבֶרof the Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןto the east.”מִזְרָחָה
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵיהֶם“Ifאִםyou doתַּעֲשׂוּןthisהַזֶּהthing,הַדָּבָרifאִםyou arm yourselvesתֵּחָלְצוּbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהfor the war,לַמִּלְחָמָה
and everyוְ כָּלarmed manחָלוּץof youלָכֶםcrossesעָבַרthe JordanהַיַּרְדֵּןbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהuntilעַדhe has dispossessedהוֹרִישׁוֹhis enemiesאֹיְבָיוfrom before him,מִפָּנָיו
and the landוְ הָאָרֶץis subduedנִכְבְּשָׁהbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהthen afterwardוְאַחַרyou shall returnתָּשֻׁבוּand beוִהְיִיתֶםinnocentנְקִיִּיםbefore YHWHמֵיְהוָהand before Israel;וּמִיִּשְׂרָאֵלand thisוְ הַזֹּאתlandהָאָרֶץshall beהָיְתָהyoursלָכֶםas a possessionלַאֲחֻזָּהbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH.יְהוָה
But ifוְאִםyou do notלֹאdoתַעֲשׂוּןso,כֵּןlook,הִנֵּהyou have sinnedחֲטָאתֶםagainst YHWH;לַיהוָהand knowוּדְעוּthatאֲשֶׁרyour sinחַטַּאתְכֶםwill findתִּמְצָאyou.אֶתְכֶם
Buildבְּנוּfor yourselvesלָכֶםcitiesעָרִיםfor your little onesלְטַפְּכֶםand pensוּגְדֵרֹתfor your sheep,לְצֹנַאֲכֶםand what has come outוְהַיֹּצֵאof your mouthמִפִּיכֶםdo.”תַּעֲשׂוּ
The sonsבְּנֵיof Gadגָדand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Reubenרְאוּבֵןsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“Your servantsעֲבָדֶיךָwill doיַעֲשׂוּasכַּאֲשֶׁרmy lordאֲדֹנִיcommands.מְצַוֶּה
Our little ones,טַפֵּנוּour wives,נָשֵׁינוּour livestock,מִקְנֵנוּand allוְכָלour animalsבְּהֶמְתֵּנוּshall beיִהְיוּthereשָׁםin the citiesבְּעָרֵיof Gilead,הַגִּלְעָד
but your servantsוַעֲבָדֶיךָwill cross over,יַעַבְרוּeveryכָּלarmed manחֲלוּץof the army,צָבָאbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהto the war,לַמִּלְחָמָהasכַּאֲשֶׁרmy lordאֲדֹנִיsays.”דֹּבֵר
So Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהgave ordersיְצַוconcerning themלָהֶםto Eleazarאֵת אֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןand to Joshuaוְאֵת יְהוֹשֻׁעַsonבִּןof Nunנוּןand to the headsוְאֶת רָאשֵׁיof the fathers’ housesאֲבוֹתof the tribesהַמַּטּוֹתof the sonsלִבְנֵיof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵהֶם“Ifאִםthe sonsבְנֵיof Gadגָדand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Reubenרְאוּבֵןcrossיַעַבְרוּwith youאִתְּכֶםthe Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןeveryכָּלarmed manחָלוּץfor the warלַמִּלְחָמָהbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהand the landוְ הָאָרֶץis subduedנִכְבְּשָׁהbefore you,לִפְנֵיכֶםthen you shall giveוּנְתַתֶּםthemלָהֶםthe landאֶרֶץof Gileadהַגִּלְעָדas a possession.לַאֲחֻזָּה
But ifוְאִםthey do notלֹאcrossיַעַבְרוּarmedחֲלוּצִיםwith you,אִתְּכֶםthen they shall have possessionsוְנֹאחֲזוּamong youבְתֹכְכֶםin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Canaan.”כְּנָעַן
The sonsבְנֵיof Gadגָדand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Reubenרְאוּבֵןanswered,וַיַּעֲנוּsaying,לֵאמֹר“WhatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhas spokenדִּבֶּרto your servants,אֶל עֲבָדֶיךָsoכֵּןwe will do.נַעֲשֶׂה
Weנַחְנוּwill cross overנַעֲבֹרarmedחֲלוּצִיםbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהinto the landאֶרֶץof Canaan,כְּנָעַןand with usוְאִתָּנוּshall remain the possessionאֲחֻזַּתof our inheritanceנַחֲלָתֵנוּon this sideמֵעֵבֶרof the Jordan.”לַיַּרְדֵּן
Mosesמֹשֶׁהgaveוַיִּתֵּןto them,לָהֶםto the sonsלִבְנֵיof Gadגָדand to the sonsוְלִבְנֵיof Reubenרְאוּבֵןand to the halfוְלַחֲצִיtribeשֵׁבֶטof Manassehמְנַשֶּׁהsonבֶןof Joseph,יוֹסֵףthe kingdomמַמְלֶכֶתof Sihonסִיחֹןkingמֶלֶךְof the Amorites,הָאֱמֹרִיand the kingdomוְ מַמְלֶכֶתof Ogעוֹגkingמֶלֶךְof Bashan,הַבָּשָׁןthe landהָאָרֶץwith its citiesלְעָרֶיהָwithin their borders,בִּגְבֻלֹתthe citiesעָרֵיof the landהָאָרֶץall around.סָבִיב
The sonsבְנֵיof GadגָדbuiltוַיִּבְנוּDibon,דִּיבֹןAtaroth,וְ עֲטָרֹתAroer,וְ עֲרֹעֵר
Atroth-shophan,וְ עַטְרֹת שׁוֹפָןJazer,וְ יַעְזֵרJogbehah,וְיָגְבֳּהָה
Beth-nimrah,וְ בֵּית נִמְרָהand Beth-haran,וְ בֵּית הָרָןfortified cities,עָרֵי מִבְצָרand sheep pens.וְגִדְרֹת צֹאן
The sonsוּבְנֵיof ReubenרְאוּבֵןbuiltבָּנוּHeshbon,חֶשְׁבּוֹןElealeh,וְ אֶלְעָלֵאKiriathaim,וְ קִרְיָתָיִם
Nebo,וְ נְבוֹand Baal-meonוְ בַּעַל מְעוֹן—their namesשֵׁםchanged—מוּסַבֹּתand Sibmah;וְ שִׂבְמָהand they gave namesוַיִּקְרְאוּ בְשֵׁמֹת שְׁמוֹתto the citiesהֶעָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרthey built.בָּנוּ
The sonsבְּנֵיof Machirמָכִירsonבֶּןof Manassehמְנַשֶּׁהwentוַיֵּלְכוּto Gileadגִּלְעָדָהand took itוַיִּלְכְּדֻהָand dispossessedוַיּוֹרֶשׁthe Amoriteהָאֱמֹרִיwhoאֲשֶׁרwas in it.בָּהּ
MosesמֹשֶׁהgaveוַיִּתֵּןGileadהַגִּלְעָדto Machirלְמָכִירsonבֶּןof Manasseh,מְנַשֶּׁהand he dweltוַיֵּשֶׁבin it.בָּהּ
Jairוְיָאִירsonבֶּןof Manassehמְנַשֶּׁהwentהָלַךְand tookוַיִּלְכֹּדtheir villages,חַוֺּתֵיהֶםand he calledוַיִּקְרָאthemאֶתְהֶןHavvoth-jair.חַוֺּת יָאִיר
Nobahוְנֹבַחwentהָלַךְand tookוַיִּלְכֹּדKenathקְנָתand its towns,וְ בְּנֹתֶיהָand he calledוַיִּקְרָאitלָהNobah,נֹבַחafter his own name.בִּשְׁמוֹ
