YHWHיְהוָהspokeוַיְדַבֵּרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁהsaying,לֵּאמֹר
“Executeנְקֹםthe vengeanceנִקְמַתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלonמֵthe Midianites;הַמִּדְיָנִיםafterwardאַחַרyou shall be gatheredתֵּאָסֵףto your people.”אֶל עַמֶּיךָ
Mosesמֹשֶׁהspokeוַיְדַבֵּרto the people,אֶל הָעָםsaying,לֵאמֹר“Armהֵחָלְצוּmenאֲנָשִׁיםfrom among youמֵאִתְּכֶםfor the army,לַצָּבָאand let them beוְיִהְיוּagainstעַלMidianמִדְיָןto executeלָתֵתthe vengeanceנִקְמַתof YHWHיְהוָהon Midian.בְּמִדְיָן
A thousandאֶלֶףfrom each tribe,לַמַּטֶּהa thousandאֶלֶףfrom each tribe,לַמַּטֶּהof allלְכֹלthe tribesמַטּוֹתof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלyou shall sendתִּשְׁלְחוּto the army.”לַצָּבָא
So there were handed overוַיִּמָּסְרוּfrom the thousandsמֵאַלְפֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלa thousandאֶלֶףfrom each tribe,לַמַּטֶּהtwelveשְׁנֵים עָשָׂרthousandאֶלֶףarmedחֲלוּצֵיfor the army.צָבָא
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsentוַיִּשְׁלַחthem,אֹתָםa thousandאֶלֶףfrom each tribe,לַמַּטֶּהto the army,לַצָּבָאthemאֹתָםand Phinehasוְ פִּינְחָסsonבֶּןof Eleazarאֶלְעָזָרthe priest,הַכֹּהֵןto the army,לַצָּבָאand the holy articlesוּכְלֵי הַקֹּדֶשׁand the trumpetsוַחֲצֹצְרוֹתof acclamationהַתְּרוּעָהwere in his hand.בְּיָדוֹ
They waged warוַיִּצְבְּאוּagainstעַלMidian,מִדְיָןasכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commandedצִוָּהMoses,מֹשֶׁהand they killedוַיַּהַרְגוּeveryכָּלmale.זָכָר
And the kingsוְ מַלְכֵיof Midianמִדְיָןthey killedהָרְגוּalong withעַלtheir slain:חַלְלֵיהֶםEvi,אֱוִיRekem,וְ רֶקֶםZur,וְ צוּרHur,וְ חוּרand Reba,וְ רֶבַעthe fiveחֲמֵשֶׁתkingsמַלְכֵיof Midian;מִדְיָןand Balaamוְ בִּלְעָםsonבֶּןof Beorבְּעוֹרthey killedהָרְגוּwith the sword.בֶּחָרֶב
The sonsבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלtook captiveוַיִּשְׁבּוּthe womenנְשֵׁיof Midianמִדְיָןand their little ones,וְ טַפָּםand allוְ כָּלtheir animalsבְּהֶמְתָּםand allוְ כָּלtheir livestockמִקְנֵהֶםand allוְ כָּלtheir wealthחֵילָםthey looted.בָּזָזוּ
Allוְ כָּלtheir citiesעָרֵיהֶםin their dwelling placesבְּמוֹשְׁבֹתָםand allוְ כָּלtheir encampmentsטִירֹתָםthey burnedשָׂרְפוּwith fire.בָּאֵשׁ
They tookוַיִּקְחוּallכָּלthe spoilהַשָּׁלָלand allוְ כָּלthe plunder,הַמַּלְקוֹחַof peopleבָּאָדָםand of animals,וּבַבְּהֵמָה
and they broughtוַיָּבִאוּto Mosesאֶל מֹשֶׁהand to Eleazarוְאֶל אֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןand to the communityוְאֶל עֲדַתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלthe captives,הַשְּׁבִיthe plunder,וְ הַמַּלְקוֹחַand the spoil,וְ הַשָּׁלָלto the campאֶל הַמַּחֲנֶהatאֶלthe plainsעַרְבֹתof Moab,מוֹאָבwhich areאֲשֶׁרbyעַלthe Jordanיַרְדֵּןopposite Jericho.יְרֵחוֹ
Mosesמֹשֶׁהand Eleazarוְאֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןand allוְכָלthe chiefsנְשִׂיאֵיof the communityהָעֵדָהwent outוַיֵּצְאוּto meet themלִקְרָאתָםoutsideאֶל מִחוּץthe camp.לַמַּחֲנֶה
Mosesמֹשֶׁהwas angryוַיִּקְצֹףwithעַלthe appointed officersפְּקוּדֵיof the army,הֶחָיִלthe commandersשָׂרֵיof thousandsהָאֲלָפִיםand the commandersוְשָׂרֵיof hundreds,הַמֵּאוֹתwho cameהַבָּאִיםfrom the armyמִצְּבָאof the war.הַמִּלְחָמָה
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵיהֶם“Have you let liveהַחִיִּיתֶםeveryכָּלfemale?נְקֵבָה
Look,הֵןtheyהֵנָּהwere,הָיוּfor the sonsלִבְנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלby the wordבִּדְבַרof Balaam,בִּלְעָםthe cause of committingלִמְסָרunfaithfulnessמַעַלagainst YHWHבַּיהוָהin the matterעַל דְּבַרof Peor,פְּעוֹרand the plagueוַ הַמַּגֵּפָהcameתְּהִיon the communityבַּעֲדַתof YHWH.יְהוָה
Nowוְעַתָּהkillהִרְגוּeveryכָלmaleזָכָרamong the little ones,בַּטָּףand killוְ הֲרֹגוּeveryכָלwomanאִשָּׁהwho has knownיֹדַעַתa manאִישׁby lyingלְמִשְׁכַּבwith a male.זָכָר
But allוְכֹלthe little onesהַטַּףamong the womenבַּנָּשִׁיםwhoאֲשֶׁרhave notלֹאknownיָדְעוּlyingמִשְׁכַּבwith a male,זָכָרkeep aliveהַחֲיוּfor yourselves.לָכֶם
And you,וְאַתֶּםcampחֲנוּoutsideמִחוּץthe campלַמַּחֲנֶהsevenשִׁבְעַתdays;יָמִיםeveryoneכֹּלwho has killedהֹרֵגa personנֶפֶשׁand everyoneוְכֹלwho has touchedנֹגֵעַthe slain,בֶּחָלָלpurify yourselvesתִּתְחַטְּאוּon the third dayבַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁיand on the seventh day,וּבַיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִיyouאַתֶּםand your captives.וּשְׁבִיכֶם
And everyוְכָלgarment,בֶּגֶדand everyוְכָלarticleכְּלִיof skin,עוֹרand everyוְכָלworkמַעֲשֵׂהof goats’ hair,עִזִּיםand everyוְכָלarticleכְּלִיof wood,עֵץyou shall purify.”תִּתְחַטָּאוּ
Eleazarאֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto the menאֶל אַנְשֵׁיof the armyהַצָּבָאwho had goneהַבָּאִיםto the war,לַמִּלְחָמָה“This isזֹאתthe statuteחֻקַּתof the instructionהַתּוֹרָהthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהcommandedצִוָּהMoses:מֹשֶׁה
Onlyאַךְthe goldהַזָּהָבand the silver,וְ הַכָּסֶףthe bronze,הַנְּחֹשֶׁתthe iron,הַבַּרְזֶלthe tin,הַבְּדִילand the lead,וְ הָעֹפָרֶת
everythingכָּל דָּבָרthatאֲשֶׁרcan goיָבֹאinto the fire,בָאֵשׁyou shall passתַּעֲבִירוּthrough the fire,בָאֵשׁand it shall be clean;וְטָהֵרonlyאַךְwith the waterבְּמֵיof impurityנִדָּהit shall be purified.יִתְחַטָּאAnd everythingוְכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרcannotלֹאgoיָבֹאinto the fireבָּאֵשׁyou shall passתַּעֲבִירוּthrough the water.בַמָּיִם
And you shall washוְכִבַּסְתֶּםyour clothesבִּגְדֵיכֶםon the seventh dayבַּיּוֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִיand be clean,וּטְהַרְתֶּםand afterwardוְאַחַרyou may comeתָּבֹאוּinto the camp.”אֶל הַמַּחֲנֶה
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Moses:אֶל מֹשֶׁה
“Take the countשָׂא רֹאשׁof the plunderמַלְקוֹחַof the captives,הַשְּׁבִיof peopleבָּאָדָםand of animals,וּבַבְּהֵמָהyouאַתָּהand Eleazarוְאֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןand the headsוְרָאשֵׁיof the fathers’ housesאֲבוֹתof the community.הָעֵדָה
And you shall divide in halfוְחָצִיתָthe plunderהַמַּלְקוֹחַbetween those who took upבֵּין תֹּפְשֵׂיthe war,הַמִּלְחָמָהwho went outהַיֹּצְאִיםto the army,לַצָּבָאand betweenוּבֵיןthe wholeכָּלcommunity.הָעֵדָה
And you shall set apartוַהֲרֵמֹתָa tributeמֶכֶסfor YHWHלַיהוָהfromמֵthe menאַנְשֵׁיof warהַמִּלְחָמָהwho went outהַיֹּצְאִיםto the army:לַצָּבָאoneאֶחָדliving beingנֶפֶשׁout of five hundred,מֵחֲמֵשׁ הַמֵּאוֹתof the people,מִן הָאָדָםof the cattle,וּמִן הַבָּקָרof the donkeys,וּמִן הַחֲמֹרִיםand of the sheep.וּמִן הַצֹּאן
From their halfמִמַּחֲצִיתָםyou shall take itתִּקָּחוּand give itוְנָתַתָּהto Eleazarלְאֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןas a contributionתְּרוּמַתto YHWH.יְהוָה
And from the halfוּמִמַּחֲצִתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלyou shall takeתִּקַּחoneאֶחָדdrawnאָחֻזout of every fifty,מִן הַחֲמִשִּׁיםof the people,מִן הָאָדָםof the cattle,מִן הַבָּקָרof the donkeys,מִן הַחֲמֹרִיםand of the sheep,וּמִן הַצֹּאןof allמִכָּלthe animals,הַבְּהֵמָהand giveוְנָתַתָּהthemאֹתָםto the Levitesלַלְוִיִּםwho keepשֹׁמְרֵיthe chargeמִשְׁמֶרֶתof the dwellingמִשְׁכַּןof YHWH.”יְהוָה
Mosesמֹשֶׁהand Eleazarוְאֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןdidוַיַּעַשׂasכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commandedצִוָּהMoses.מֹשֶׁה
The plunder,הַמַּלְקוֹחַthe restיֶתֶרof the bootyהַבָּזthatאֲשֶׁרthe peopleעַםof the armyהַצָּבָאhad looted,בָּזְזוּwasוַיְהִיsix hundred seventy-five thousandשֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף וְשִׁבְעִים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשֶׁת אֲלָפִיםsheep,צֹאן
seventy-two thousandשְׁנַיִם וְשִׁבְעִים אָלֶףcattle,וּבָקָר
sixty-one thousandוַ אֶחָד וְשִׁשִּׁים אָלֶףdonkeys,חֲמֹרִים
and human beings,וְנֶפֶשׁ אָדָםfromמִןthe womenהַנָּשִׁיםwhoאֲשֶׁרhad notלֹאknownיָדְעוּlyingמִשְׁכַּבwith a male,זָכָרallכָּלthe personsנֶפֶשׁwere thirty-two thousand.שְׁנַיִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁים אָלֶף
The halfהַמֶּחֱצָה—the portionחֵלֶקof those who went outהַיֹּצְאִיםto the army—בַּצָּבָאwasוַתְּהִיin numberמִסְפַּרthree hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundredשְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף וּשְׁלֹשִׁים אֶלֶף וְשִׁבְעַת אֲלָפִים וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹתsheep;הַצֹּאן
and the tributeוַ הַמֶּכֶסfor YHWHלַיהוָהfromמִןthe sheepהַצֹּאןwasיְהִיsix hundred seventy-five;שֵׁשׁ מֵאוֹת חָמֵשׁ וְשִׁבְעִים
and the cattleוְהַבָּקָרwere thirty-six thousand,שִׁשָּׁה וּשְׁלֹשִׁים אָלֶףand their tributeוּמִכְסָםfor YHWHלַיהוָהwas seventy-two;שְׁנַיִם וְשִׁבְעִים
and the donkeysוַחֲמֹרִיםwere thirty thousand five hundred,שְׁלֹשִׁים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹתand their tributeוּמִכְסָםfor YHWHלַיהוָהwas sixty-one;אֶחָד וְשִׁשִּׁים
and the human beingsוְנֶפֶשׁ אָדָםwere sixteen thousand,שִׁשָּׁה עָשָׂר אָלֶףand their tributeוּמִכְסָםfor YHWHלַיהוָהwas thirty-twoשְׁנַיִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁיםpersons.נָפֶשׁ
Mosesמֹשֶׁהgaveוַיִּתֵּןthe tribute,מֶכֶסthe contributionתְּרוּמַתof YHWH,יְהוָהto Eleazarלְאֶלְעָזָרthe priest,הַכֹּהֵןasכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commandedצִוָּהMoses.מֹשֶׁה
And from the halfוּמִמַּחֲצִיתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלwhichאֲשֶׁרMosesמֹשֶׁהhad dividedחָצָהfromמִןthe menהָאֲנָשִׁיםwho had foughtהַצֹּבְאִים
—the halfמֶחֱצַתof the communityהָעֵדָהwasוַתְּהִיthree hundred thirty-seven thousand five hundredשְׁלֹשׁ מֵאוֹת אֶלֶף וּשְׁלֹשִׁים אֶלֶף שִׁבְעַת אֲלָפִים וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹתof the sheep,מִן הַצֹּאן
thirty-six thousandשִׁשָּׁה וּשְׁלֹשִׁים אָלֶףcattle,וּבָקָר
thirty thousand five hundredשְׁלֹשִׁים אֶלֶף וַחֲמֵשׁ מֵאוֹתdonkeys,וַחֲמֹרִים
and sixteen thousandוְ שִׁשָּׁה עָשָׂר אָלֶףhuman beings—נֶפֶשׁ אָדָם
from the halfמִמַּחֲצִתof the sonsבְּנֵיof IsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלMosesמֹשֶׁהtookוַיִּקַּחthe one drawnהָאָחֻז אֶחָדout of every fifty,מִן הַחֲמִשִּׁיםof the peopleמִן הָאָדָםand of the animals,וּמִן הַבְּהֵמָהand gaveוַיִּתֵּןthemאֹתָםto the Levitesלַלְוִיִּםwho keptשֹׁמְרֵיthe chargeמִשְׁמֶרֶתof the dwellingמִשְׁכַּןof YHWH,יְהוָהasכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad commandedצִוָּהMoses.מֹשֶׁה
Then the appointed officersוַ הַפְּקֻדִיםwhoאֲשֶׁרwere over the thousandsלְאַלְפֵיof the army,הַצָּבָאthe commandersשָׂרֵיof thousandsהָאֲלָפִיםand the commandersוְשָׂרֵיof hundreds,הַמֵּאוֹתcame nearיִּקְרְבוּto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה
and they saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“Your servantsעֲבָדֶיךָhave taken the countנָשְׂאוּ רֹאשׁof the menאַנְשֵׁיof warהַמִּלְחָמָהwhoאֲשֶׁרare in our hand,בְּיָדֵנוּand notוְלֹאa manאִישׁis missingנִפְקַדfrom us.מִמֶּנּוּ
So we have broughtוַנַּקְרֵבthe offeringקָרְבַּןof YHWH,יְהוָהeachאִישׁwhatאֲשֶׁרhe found:מָצָאarticlesכְלִיof gold,זָהָבarmletsאֶצְעָדָהand bracelets,וְצָמִידrings,טַבַּעַתearrings,עָגִילand necklaces,וְכוּמָזto make expiationלְכַפֵּרfor our soulsעַל נַפְשֹׁתֵינוּbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH.”יְהוָה
Mosesמֹשֶׁהand Eleazarוְאֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןtookוַיִּקַּחthe goldהַזָּהָבfrom them,מֵאִתָּםallכֹּלcraftedמַעֲשֶׂהarticles.כְּלִי
And allוַ כָּלthe goldזְהַבof the contributionהַתְּרוּמָהthatאֲשֶׁרthey set apartהֵרִימוּfor YHWHלַיהוָהwasיְהִיsixteen thousand seven hundred fiftyשִׁשָּׁה עָשָׂר אֶלֶף שְׁבַע מֵאוֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁיםshekels,שָׁקֶלfromמֵthe commandersשָׂרֵיof thousandsהָאֲלָפִיםand fromוּמֵthe commandersשָׂרֵיof hundreds.הַמֵּאוֹת
The menאַנְשֵׁיof the armyהַצָּבָאhad lootedבָּזְזוּeachאִישׁfor himself.לוֹ
Mosesמֹשֶׁהand Eleazarוְאֶלְעָזָרthe priestהַכֹּהֵןtookוַיִּקַּחthe goldהַזָּהָבfromמֵthe commandersשָׂרֵיof thousandsהָאֲלָפִיםand of hundreds,וְהַמֵּאוֹתand broughtוַיָּבִאוּitאֹתוֹintoאֶלthe tentאֹהֶלof meetingמוֹעֵדas a memorialזִכָּרוֹןfor the sonsלִבְנֵיof IsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH.יְהוָה
