YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלSamuel,שְׁמוּאֵל“How longעַד מָתַיwill youאַתָּהmournמִתְאַבֵּלforאֶלSaul,שָׁאוּלwhen Iוַאֲנִיhave despised himמְאַסְתִּיוfrom reigningמִמְּלֹךְoverעַלIsrael?יִשְׂרָאֵלFillמַלֵּאyour hornקַרְנְךָwith oilשֶׁמֶןand go;וְלֵךְI will send youאֶשְׁלָחֲךָtoאֶלJesseיִשַׁיthe Bethlehemite,בֵּית הַלַּחְמִיforכִּיI have seenרָאִיתִיamong his sonsבְּבָנָיוa kingמֶלֶךְfor myself.”לִי
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Howאֵיךְcan I go?אֵלֵךְSaulשָׁאוּלwill hear itוְשָׁמַעand kill me.”וַהֲרָגָנִיYHWHיְהוָהsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Takeתִּקַּחa heiferעֶגְלַתof the herdבָּקָרin your hand,בְּיָדֶךָand say,וְאָמַרְתָּ‘I have comeבָּאתִיto sacrificeלִזְבֹּחַto YHWH.’לַיהוָה
InviteוְקָרָאתָJesseלְיִשַׁיto the sacrifice,בַּזָּבַחand Iוְאָנֹכִיwill make known to youאוֹדִיעֲךָwhatאֵת אֲשֶׁרyou shall do;תַּעֲשֶׂהand you shall anointוּמָשַׁחְתָּfor meלִיthe oneאֵת אֲשֶׁרI tellאֹמַרyou.”אֵלֶיךָ
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלdidוַיַּעַשׂwhatאֵת אֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad spokenדִּבֶּרand cameוַיָּבֹאto Bethlehem.בֵּית לָחֶםThe eldersזִקְנֵיof the cityהָעִירtrembledוַיֶּחֶרְדוּto meet him,לִקְרָאתוֹand one said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Is your comingבּוֹאֶךָin peace?”שָׁלֹם
He said,וַיֹּאמֶר“In peace.שָׁלוֹםI have comeבָּאתִיto sacrificeלִזְבֹּחַto YHWH.לַיהוָהSanctify yourselvesהִתְקַדְּשׁוּand comeוּבָאתֶםwith meאִתִּיto the sacrifice.”בַּזָּבַחAnd he sanctifiedוַיְקַדֵּשׁJesseאֶת יִשַׁיand his sons,וְאֶת בָּנָיוand invitedוַיִּקְרָאthemלָהֶםto the sacrifice.לַזָּבַח
And it came about,וַיְהִיwhen they came,בְּבוֹאָםthat he sawוַיַּרְאEliabאֶת אֱלִיאָבand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“SurelyאַךְbeforeנֶגֶדYHWHיְהוָהis his anointed.”מְשִׁיחוֹ
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלSamuel,שְׁמוּאֵל“Do notאַלlookתַּבֵּטatאֶלhis appearanceמַרְאֵהוּor atוְאֶלthe heightגְּבֹהַּof his stature,קוֹמָתוֹforכִּיI have despised him;מְאַסְתִּיהוּforכִּיit is notלֹאwhatאֲשֶׁרthe human beingהָאָדָםsees:יִרְאֶהthe human beingכִּי הָאָדָםseesיִרְאֶהwhat is before the eyes,לַעֵינַיִםbut YHWHוַיהוָהseesיִרְאֶהthe heart.”לַלֵּבָב
JesseיִשַׁיcalledוַיִּקְרָאAbinadabאֶל אֲבִינָדָבand made him passוַיַּעֲבִרֵהוּbeforeלִפְנֵיSamuel,שְׁמוּאֵלand he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Neitherגַּם לֹאthis oneבָּזֶהhas YHWHיְהוָהchosen.”בָחַר
Jesseיִשַׁיhad Shammahשַׁמָּהpass by,וַיַּעֲבֵרand he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Neitherגַּם לֹאthis oneבָּזֶהhas YHWHיְהוָהchosen.”בָחַר
Jesseיִשַׁיhad his sevenשִׁבְעַתsonsבָּנָיוpassוַיַּעֲבֵרbeforeלִפְנֵיSamuel,שְׁמוּאֵלand Samuelוַ שְׁמוּאֵלsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלJesse,יִשַׁי“YHWHיְהוָהhas notלֹאchosenבָחַרthese.”בָּאֵלֶּה
SamuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלJesse,יִשַׁי“Areהֲthe young menהַנְּעָרִיםall here?”תַמּוּHe said,וַיֹּאמֶר“There remainsשָׁאַרstillעוֹדthe youngest,הַקָּטָןand look,וְהִנֵּהhe is pasturingרֹעֶהthe flock.”בַּצֹּאןSamuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלJesse,יִשַׁי“Sendשִׁלְחָהand get him,וְקָחֶנּוּforכִּיwe will notלֹאsit aroundנָסֹבuntilעַדhe comesבֹּאוֹhere.”פֹה
He sentוַיִּשְׁלַחand brought him in.וַיְבִיאֵהוּHeוְהוּאwas ruddy,אַדְמוֹנִיwithעִםbeautifulיְפֵהeyes,עֵינַיִםand goodוְטוֹבin appearance.רֹאִיAnd YHWHוַ יְהוָהsaid,יֹּאמֶר“Arise,קוּםanoint him,מְשָׁחֵהוּforכִּיthisזֶהis he.”הוּא
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלtookוַיִּקַּחthe hornאֶת קֶרֶןof oilהַשֶּׁמֶןand anointedוַיִּמְשַׁחhimאֹתוֹin the midstבְּקֶרֶבof his brothers;אֶחָיוand the spiritוַ רוּחַof YHWHיְהוָהcame mightilyתִּצְלַחuponאֶלDavidדָּוִדfrom thatמֵהַ הַהוּאdayיּוֹםonward.וָמָעְלָהSamuelשְׁמוּאֵלroseוַיָּקָםand wentוַיֵּלֶךְto Ramah.הָרָמָתָה
The spiritוְרוּחַof YHWHיְהוָהdepartedסָרָהfromמֵעִםSaul,שָׁאוּלand an evilוּ רָעָהspiritרוּחַfromמֵאֵתYHWHיְהוָהterrified him.בִעֲתַתּוּ
The servantsעַבְדֵיof Saulשָׁאוּלsaidוַיֹּאמְרוּto him,אֵלָיו“Look,הִנֵּהplease,נָאan evil spiritרוּחַ רָעָהof Elohimאֱלֹהִיםis terrifying you.מְבַעִתֶּךָ
Please letנָאour lordאֲדֹנֵנוּspeak:יֹאמַרyour servantsעֲבָדֶיךָare before you;לְפָנֶיךָthey will seekיְבַקְשׁוּa manאִישׁwho knowsיֹדֵעַhow to playמְנַגֵּןthe lyre;בַּכִּנּוֹרand it will be,וְהָיָהwhenבִּהְיוֹתthe evil spiritרוּחַ רָעָהof Elohimאֱלֹהִיםis upon you,עָלֶיךָthat he will playוְנִגֵּןwith his hand,בְּיָדוֹand it will be wellוְטוֹבwith you.”לָךְ
Saulשָׁאוּלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלhis servants,עֲבָדָיו“Look outרְאוּfor me,לִיplease,נָאfor a manאִישׁwho plays well,מֵיטִיב לְנַגֵּןand bring himוַהֲבִיאוֹתֶםto me.”אֵלָי
Oneאֶחָדof the young menמֵהַנְּעָרִיםansweredוַיַּעַןand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Look,הִנֵּהI have seenרָאִיתִיa sonבֵּןof Jesseלְיִשַׁיthe Bethlehemiteבֵּית הַלַּחְמִיwho knowsיֹדֵעַhow to play,נַגֵּןand a mighty manוְגִבּוֹרof valor,חַיִלand a manוְאִישׁof war,מִלְחָמָהand discerningוּנְבוֹןin speech,דָּבָרand a manוְאִישׁof fine figure;תֹּאַרand YHWH isוַיהוָהwith him.”עִמּוֹ
SaulשָׁאוּלsentוַיִּשְׁלַחmessengersמַלְאָכִיםtoאֶלJesseיִשָׁיand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Sendשִׁלְחָהto meאֵלַיDavidאֶת דָּוִדyour son,בִּנְךָwho isאֲשֶׁרwith the flock.”בַּצֹּאן
Jesseיִשַׁיtookוַיִּקַּחa donkeyחֲמוֹרloaded with bread,לֶחֶםand a skinוְנֹאדof wine,יַיִןand oneוּ אֶחָדyoung goat,גְדִי עִזִּיםand sent themוַיִּשְׁלַחby the handבְּיַדof Davidדָּוִדhis sonבְּנוֹtoאֶלSaul.שָׁאוּל
DavidדָוִדcameוַיָּבֹאtoאֶלSaulשָׁאוּלand stoodוַיַּעֲמֹדbefore him;לְפָנָיוand he loved himוַיֶּאֱהָבֵהוּgreatly,מְאֹדand he becameוַיְהִי לוֹone who carriedנֹשֵׂאhis weapons.כֵלִים
SaulשָׁאוּלsentוַיִּשְׁלַחtoאֶלJesse,יִשַׁיsaying,לֵאמֹר“Please letנָאDavidדָוִדstandיַעֲמָדbefore me,לְפָנַיforכִּיhe has foundמָצָאfavorחֵןin my eyes.”בְּעֵינָי
And it would happen,וְהָיָהwheneverבִּהְיוֹתthe spiritרוּחַof Elohimאֱלֹהִיםwas uponאֶלSaul,שָׁאוּלthat Davidדָּוִדwould takeוְלָקַחthe lyreאֶת הַכִּנּוֹרand playוְנִגֵּןwith his hand;בְּיָדוֹand there would be reliefוְרָוַחfor Saulלְשָׁאוּלand it would be wellוְטוֹבwith him,לוֹand the evil spiritוְ רוּחַ הָרָעָהwould departסָרָהfrom him.מֵעָלָיו
