ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWHיְהוָהTsevaot:צְבָאוֹת‘I call to accountפָּקַדְתִּיwhatאֵת אֲשֶׁרAmalekעֲמָלֵקdidעָשָׂהto Israel,לְיִשְׂרָאֵלhowאֲשֶׁרhe set himself against himשָׂם לוֹon the wayבַּדֶּרֶךְwhen he came upבַּעֲלֹתוֹfrom Egypt.מִמִּצְרָיִם
Nowעַתָּהgoלֵךְand strikeוְהִכִּיתָהAmalek,אֶת עֲמָלֵקand devote to destructionוְהַחֲרַמְתֶּםallאֶת כָּלthatאֲשֶׁרhe has;לוֹdo notוְלֹאspareתַחְמֹלhim,עָלָיוbut put to deathוְהֵמַתָּהfrom manמֵאִישׁto woman,עַד אִשָּׁהfrom childמֵעֹלֵלto nursing infant,וְעַד יוֹנֵקfrom oxמִשּׁוֹרto lamb,וְעַד שֶׂהfrom camelמִגָּמָלto donkey.’”וְעַד חֲמוֹר
Saulשָׁאוּלsummonedוַיְשַׁמַּעthe peopleאֶת הָעָםand counted themוַיִּפְקְדֵםat Telaim:בַּטְּלָאִיםtwo hundredמָאתַיִםthousandאֶלֶףfoot soldiers,רַגְלִיand tenוַעֲשֶׂרֶתthousandאֲלָפִיםmenאֶת אִישׁof Judah.יְהוּדָה
Saulשָׁאוּלcameוַיָּבֹאtoעַדthe cityעִירof Amalekעֲמָלֵקand lay in ambushוַיָּרֶבin the wadi.בַּנָּחַל
Saulשָׁאוּלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלthe Kenites,הַקֵּינִי“Go,לְכוּturn aside,סֻּרוּgo downרְדוּfrom amongמִתּוֹךְthe Amalekites,עֲמָלֵקִיlestפֶּןI remove youאֹסִפְךָwith them;עִמּוֹfor youוְאַתָּהshowedעָשִׂיתָהloyal loveחֶסֶדtoעִםallכָּלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלwhen they came upבַּעֲלוֹתָםfrom Egypt.”מִמִּצְרָיִםSo the Kenitesוַ קֵינִיturned asideיָּסַרfrom amongמִתּוֹךְAmalek.עֲמָלֵק
SaulשָׁאוּלstruckוַיַּךְAmalekאֶת עֲמָלֵקfrom Havilahמֵחֲוִילָהas you comeבּוֹאֲךָto Shur,שׁוּרwhichאֲשֶׁרis oppositeעַל פְּנֵיEgypt.מִצְרָיִם
He capturedוַיִּתְפֹּשׂAgagאֶת אֲגַגkingמֶלֶךְof Amalekעֲמָלֵקalive,חָיand allוְאֶת כָּלthe peopleהָעָםhe devoted to destructionהֶחֱרִיםwith the edgeלְפִיof the sword.חָרֶב
But Saulוַ שָׁאוּלand the peopleוְהָעָםsparedיַּחְמֹלAgagעַל אֲגָגand the bestוְעַל מֵיטַבof the flockהַצֹּאןand the herd,וְהַבָּקָרthe second-bornוְהַמִּשְׁנִיםand the lambs,וְעַל הַכָּרִיםand allוְעַל כָּלthat was good,הַטּוֹבand they were notוְלֹאwillingאָבוּto devote them to destruction;הַחֲרִימָםbut allוְכָלthe propertyהַמְּלָאכָהthat was despisedנְמִבְזָהand worthless,וְנָמֵסthatאֹתָהּthey devoted to destruction.הֶחֱרִימוּ
The wordדְּבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcameוַיְהִיtoאֶלSamuel,שְׁמוּאֵלsaying:לֵאמֹר
“I am sorryנִחַמְתִּיthatכִּיI madeהִמְלַכְתִּיSaulאֶת שָׁאוּלking,לְמֶלֶךְforכִּיhe has turned backשָׁבfrom following meמֵאַחֲרַיand has notוְ לֹאcarried outהֵקִיםmy words.”אֶת דְּבָרַיSamuelלִשְׁמוּאֵלwas incensed,וַיִּחַרand he cried outוַיִּזְעַקtoאֶלYHWHיְהוָהallכָּלnight.הַלָּיְלָה
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלrose earlyוַיַּשְׁכֵּםto meetלִקְרַאתSaulשָׁאוּלin the morning;בַּבֹּקֶרand it was toldוַיֻּגַּדto Samuel,לִשְׁמוּאֵלsaying,לֵאמֹר“Saulשָׁאוּלcameבָּאto Carmel,הַכַּרְמֶלָהand look,וְהִנֵּהhe is setting upמַצִּיבfor himselfלוֹa monument;יָדand he turnedוַיִּסֹּבand passed onוַיַּעֲבֹרand went downוַיֵּרֶדto Gilgal.”הַגִּלְגָּל
SamuelשְׁמוּאֵלcameוַיָּבֹאtoאֶלSaul,שָׁאוּלand Saulוַ שָׁאוּלsaidיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“Blessedבָּרוּךְare youאַתָּהby YHWH.לַיהוָהI have carried outהֲקִימֹתִיthe wordאֶת דְּבַרof YHWH.”יְהוָה
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Then what isוּמֶהthisהַזֶּהsoundקוֹלof the flockהַצֹּאןin my ears,בְּאָזְנָיand the soundוְקוֹלof the herdהַבָּקָרthatאֲשֶׁרIאָנֹכִיhear?”שֹׁמֵעַ
Saulשָׁאוּלsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“From the Amalekitesמֵעֲמָלֵקִיthey have brought them,הֱבִיאוּםforאֲשֶׁרthe peopleהָעָםsparedחָמַלthe bestעַל מֵיטַבof the flockהַצֹּאןand the herdוְהַבָּקָרin orderלְמַעַןto sacrificeזְבֹחַto YHWHלַיהוָהyour Elohim;אֱלֹהֶיךָand the restוְאֶת הַיּוֹתֵרwe have devoted to destruction.”הֶחֱרַמְנוּ
SamuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלSaul,שָׁאוּל“Stop,הֶרֶףand I will tellוְאַגִּידָהyouלְּךָwhatאֵת אֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהspokeדִּבֶּרto meאֵלַיthis night.”הַלָּיְלָהAnd he saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“Speak.”דַּבֵּר
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Is it not soהֲלוֹאthat thoughאִםyou were smallקָטֹן אַתָּהin your own eyes,בְּעֵינֶיךָyou areאָתָּהheadרֹאשׁof the tribesשִׁבְטֵיof Israel?יִשְׂרָאֵלAnd YHWHוַ יְהוָהanointed youיִּמְשָׁחֲךָas kingלְמֶלֶךְoverעַלIsrael.יִשְׂרָאֵל
And YHWHוַ יְהוָהsent youיִּשְׁלָחֲךָon a journeyבְּדָרֶךְand said,וַיֹּאמֶר‘Goלֵךְand devote to destructionוְהַחֲרַמְתָּהthe sinners,אֶת הַחַטָּאִיםAmalek,אֶת עֲמָלֵקand fightוְנִלְחַמְתָּagainst himבוֹuntilעַדyou have consumed them.’כַּלּוֹתָם אֹתָם
Why thenוְלָמָּהdid you notלֹאlistenשָׁמַעְתָּto the voiceבְּקוֹלof YHWH,יְהוָהbut rushedוַתַּעַטonאֶלthe spoilהַשָּׁלָלand didוַתַּעַשׂwhat was evilהָרַעin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof YHWH?”יְהוָה
SaulשָׁאוּלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלSamuel,שְׁמוּאֵל“Yes, I haveאֲשֶׁרlistenedשָׁמַעְתִּיto the voiceבְּקוֹלof YHWH,יְהוָהand I wentוָאֵלֵךְon the wayבַּדֶּרֶךְon whichאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהsent me;שְׁלָחַנִיand I have broughtוָאָבִיאAgagאֶת אֲגַגkingמֶלֶךְof Amalek,עֲמָלֵקand Amalekוְאֶת עֲמָלֵקI have devoted to destruction.הֶחֱרַמְתִּי
But the peopleוַ הָעָםtookיִּקַּחfrom the spoilמֵהַשָּׁלָלanimals of the flockצֹאןand herd,וּבָקָרthe firstfruitsרֵאשִׁיתof what was devoted to destruction,הַחֵרֶםto sacrificeלִזְבֹּחַto YHWHלַיהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֶיךָin Gilgal.”בַּגִּלְגָּל
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Does YHWHהַ לַיהוָהhave as much delightחֵפֶץin burnt offeringsבְּעֹלוֹתand sacrificesוּזְבָחִיםas in listeningכִּשְׁמֹעַto the voiceבְּקוֹלof YHWH?יְהוָהLook,הִנֵּהto listenשְׁמֹעַis betterטוֹבthan sacrifice,מִזֶּבַחto pay attentionלְהַקְשִׁיבthan the fatמֵחֵלֶבof rams.אֵילִים
Forכִּיrebellionמֶרִיis the sinחַטַּאתof divination,קֶסֶםand stubbornnessהַפְצַרis wickednessוְאָוֶןand teraphim.וּתְרָפִיםBecauseיַעַןyou have despisedמָאַסְתָּthe wordאֶת דְּבַרof YHWH,יְהוָהhe has despised youוַיִּמְאָסְךָfrom being king.”מִמֶּלֶךְ
SaulשָׁאוּלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלSamuel,שְׁמוּאֵל“I have sinned,חָטָאתִיforכִּיI have transgressedעָבַרְתִּיthe commandאֶת פִּיof YHWHיְהוָהand your words,וְאֶת דְּבָרֶיךָbecauseכִּיI fearedיָרֵאתִיthe peopleאֶת הָעָםand listenedוָאֶשְׁמַעto their voice.בְּקוֹלָם
And now,וְעַתָּהforgive,שָׂאplease,נָאmy sin,אֶת חַטָּאתִיand returnוְשׁוּבwith me,עִמִּיand I will bow downוְאֶשְׁתַּחֲוֶהto YHWH.”לַיהוָה
SamuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלSaul,שָׁאוּל“I will notלֹאreturnאָשׁוּבwith you,עִמָּךְforכִּיyou have despisedמָאַסְתָּהthe wordאֶת דְּבַרof YHWH,יְהוָהand YHWHוַ יְהוָהhas despised youיִּמְאָסְךָfrom beingמִהְיוֹתkingמֶלֶךְoverעַלIsrael.”יִשְׂרָאֵל
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלturnedוַיִּסֹּבto go,לָלֶכֶתand he seizedוַיַּחֲזֵקthe edgeבִּכְנַףof his robe,מְעִילוֹand it tore.וַיִּקָּרַע
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,אֵלָיו“YHWHיְהוָהhas tornקָרַעthe kingdomאֶת מַמְלְכוּתof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלfrom youמֵעָלֶיךָtodayהַיּוֹםand has given itוּנְתָנָהּto your companion,לְרֵעֲךָwho is betterהַטּוֹבthan you.מִמֶּךָּ
And alsoוְגַםthe Splendorנֵצַחof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלdoes notלֹאlieיְשַׁקֵּרand does notוְלֹאrelent,יִנָּחֵםforכִּיheהוּאis notלֹאa human beingאָדָםthat he should relent.”לְהִנָּחֵם
He said,וַיֹּאמֶר“I have sinned.חָטָאתִיNowעַתָּהhonor me,כַּבְּדֵנִיplease,נָאbeforeנֶגֶדthe eldersזִקְנֵיof my peopleעַמִּיand beforeוְנֶגֶדIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלand returnוְשׁוּבwith me,עִמִּיand I will bow downוְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֵיתִיto YHWHלַיהוָהyour Elohim.”אֱלֹהֶיךָ
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלturned backוַיָּשָׁבafterאַחֲרֵיSaul,שָׁאוּלand Saulוַ שָׁאוּלbowed downיִּשְׁתַּחוּto YHWH.לַיהוָה
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Bring nearהַגִּישׁוּto meאֵלַיAgagאֶת אֲגַגkingמֶלֶךְof Amalek.”עֲמָלֵקAnd Agagוַ אֲגַגwentיֵּלֶךְto himאֵלָיוin good spirits;מַעֲדַנֹּתand Agagוַ אֲגָגsaid,יֹּאמֶר“Surelyאָכֵןthe bitternessמַרof deathהַמָּוֶתhas turned aside.”סָר
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Asכַּאֲשֶׁרyour swordחַרְבֶּךָhas made women childless,שִׁכְּלָה נָשִׁיםsoכֵּןyour motherאִמֶּךָshall be childlessתִּשְׁכַּלamong women.”מִנָּשִׁיםAnd Samuelוַ שְׁמוּאֵלhacked to piecesיְשַׁסֵּףAgagאֶת אֲגָגbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהat Gilgal.בַּגִּלְגָּל
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלwentוַיֵּלֶךְto Ramah,הָרָמָתָהand Saulוְשָׁאוּלwent upעָלָהtoאֶלhis house,בֵּיתוֹto Gibeahגִּבְעַתof Saul.שָׁאוּל
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלdid notוְלֹאseeלִרְאוֹתSaulאֶת שָׁאוּלagainיָסַףuntilעַדthe dayיוֹםof his death,מוֹתוֹforכִּיSamuelשְׁמוּאֵלmournedהִתְאַבֵּלforאֶלSaul;שָׁאוּלand YHWHוַיהוָהwas sorryנִחָםthatכִּיhe had made Saul kingהִמְלִיךְ אֶת שָׁאוּלoverעַלIsrael.יִשְׂרָאֵל
