Abrahamאַבְרָהָםsaidוַיֹּאמֶרof Sarahאֶל שָׂרָהhis wife,אִשְׁתּוֹ“Sheהִואis my sister.”אֲחֹתִיSo Abimelechוַ אֲבִימֶלֶךְkingמֶלֶךְof Gerarגְּרָרsentיִּשְׁלַחand tookוַיִּקַּחSarah.אֶת שָׂרָה
But Elohimוַ אֱלֹהִיםcameיָּבֹאto Abimelechאֶל אֲבִימֶלֶךְin a dreamבַּחֲלוֹםby nightהַלָּיְלָהand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“Look,הִנְּךָyou are a dead manמֵתbecause ofעַלthe womanהָאִשָּׁהwhomאֲשֶׁרyou have taken,לָקַחְתָּfor sheוְהִואis marriedבְּעֻלַתto a husband.”בָּעַל
Now Abimelechוַאֲבִימֶלֶךְhad notלֹאcome nearקָרַבher,אֵלֶיהָand he said,וַיֹּאמַר“Adonai,אֲדֹנָיwill you killהֲ תַּהֲרֹגa nation,גוֹיeven one that isגַּםrighteous?צַדִּיק
Did he notהֲלֹא הוּאsayאָמַרto me,לִי‘Sheהִואis my sister’?אֲחֹתִיAnd she,וְהִיאshe tooגַם הִואsaid,אָמְרָה‘Heהוּאis my brother.’אָחִיIn the integrityבְּתָםof my heartלְבָבִיand in the innocenceוּבְנִקְיֹןof my handsכַּפַּיI have doneעָשִׂיתִיthis.”זֹאת
Then Elohimוַ הָאֱלֹהִיםsaidיֹּאמֶרto himאֵלָיוin the dream,בַּחֲלֹם“Yes,גַּםIאָנֹכִיknowיָדַעְתִּיthatכִּיin the integrityבְתָםof your heartלְבָבְךָyou have doneעָשִׂיתָthis;זֹּאתandוָIאָנֹכִיalsoגַּםkept backאֶחְשֹׂךְyouאוֹתְךָfrom sinningמֵחֲטוֹagainst me;לִיthat is whyעַל כֵּןI did notלֹאlet youנְתַתִּיךָtouchלִנְגֹּעַher.אֵלֶיהָ
Now then,וְעַתָּהreturnהָשֵׁבthe man’sהָאִישׁwife,אֵשֶׁתforכִּיheהוּאis a prophet,נָבִיאand he will prayוְיִתְפַּלֵּלfor you,בַּעַדְךָand you will live.וֶחְיֵהBut ifוְאִםyou do notאֵינְךָreturn her,מֵשִׁיבknowדַּעthatכִּיyou will surelyמוֹתdie,תָּמוּתyouאַתָּהand allוְכָלwhoאֲשֶׁרare yours.”לָךְ
So Abimelechוַ אֲבִימֶלֶךְrose earlyיַּשְׁכֵּםin the morningבַּבֹּקֶרand calledוַיִּקְרָאallלְכָלhis servantsעֲבָדָיוand toldוַיְדַבֵּרallאֶת כָּלthese thingsהַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּהin their ears;בְּאָזְנֵיהֶםand the menוַ הָאֲנָשִׁיםwere veryמְאֹדafraid.יִּירְאוּ
Then Abimelechוַ אֲבִימֶלֶךְcalledיִּקְרָאAbrahamלְאַבְרָהָםand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“Whatמֶהhave you doneעָשִׂיתָto us?לָּנוּAnd howוּמֶהhave I sinnedחָטָאתִיagainst you,לָךְthatכִּיyou have broughtהֵבֵאתָon meעָלַיand onוְעַלmy kingdomמַמְלַכְתִּיa greatגְדֹלָהsin?חֲטָאָהDeedsמַעֲשִׂיםthatאֲשֶׁרought notלֹאto be doneיֵעָשׂוּyou have doneעָשִׂיתָto me.”עִמָּדִי
And Abimelechוַ אֲבִימֶלֶךְsaidיֹּאמֶרto Abraham,אֶל אַבְרָהָם“Whatמָהdid you see,רָאִיתָthatכִּיyou didעָשִׂיתָthisהַזֶּהthing?”אֶת הַדָּבָר
Abrahamאַבְרָהָםsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“BecauseכִּיI thought,אָמַרְתִּי‘Surelyרַקthere is noאֵיןfearיִרְאַתof Elohimאֱלֹהִיםin thisהַזֶּהplace,בַּמָּקוֹםand they will kill meוַהֲרָגוּנִיbecause ofעַל דְּבַרmy wife.’אִשְׁתִּי
Besides,וְגַםshe reallyאָמְנָהisהִואmy sister,אֲחֹתִיthe daughterבַתof my father,אָבִיthoughאַךְnotלֹאthe daughterבַתof my mother;אִמִּיand she becameוַתְּהִיmyלִיwife.לְאִשָּׁה
And whenוַיְהִי כַּאֲשֶׁרElohimאֱלֹהִיםcaused me to wanderהִתְעוּ אֹתִיfrom the houseמִבֵּיתof my father,אָבִיI saidוָאֹמַרto her,לָהּ‘Thisזֶהis the loyal loveחַסְדֵּךְthatאֲשֶׁרyou shall showתַּעֲשִׂיme:עִמָּדִיin everyאֶל כָּלplaceהַמָּקוֹםthatאֲשֶׁרwe comeנָבוֹאto,שָׁמָּהsayאִמְרִיof me,לִי“Heהוּאis my brother.”’”אָחִי
Then Abimelechאֲבִימֶלֶךְtookוַיִּקַּחsheepצֹאןand cattle,וּבָקָרand male slavesוַעֲבָדִיםand female slaves,וּשְׁפָחֹתand gave themוַיִּתֵּןto Abraham,לְאַבְרָהָםand he returnedוַיָּשֶׁבto himלוֹSarahאֵת שָׂרָהhis wife.אִשְׁתּוֹ
And Abimelechוַ אֲבִימֶלֶךְsaid,יֹּאמֶר“Look,הִנֵּהmy landאַרְצִיis before you;לְפָנֶיךָliveשֵׁבwherever it is goodבַּטּוֹבin your eyes.”בְּעֵינֶיךָ
And to Sarahוּלְשָׂרָהhe said,אָמַר“Look,הִנֵּהI have givenנָתַתִּיyour brotherלְאָחִיךְa thousandאֶלֶףpieces of silver;כֶּסֶףlook,הִנֵּהitהוּאis for youלָךְa coveringכְּסוּתfor the eyesעֵינַיִםfor allלְכֹלwhoאֲשֶׁרare with you;אִתָּךְand beforeוְאֵתeveryoneכֹּלyou are vindicated.”וְנֹכָחַת
Then Abrahamוַ אַבְרָהָםprayedיִּתְפַּלֵּלto Elohim,אֶל הָאֱלֹהִיםand Elohimוַ אֱלֹהִיםhealedיִּרְפָּאAbimelech,אֶת אֲבִימֶלֶךְhis wife,וְאֶת אִשְׁתּוֹand his slave women,וְאַמְהֹתָיוso that they bore children.וַיֵּלֵדוּ
ForכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhad completelyעָצֹרclosedעָצַרeveryבְּעַד כָּלwombרֶחֶםin the houseלְבֵיתof Abimelechאֲבִימֶלֶךְbecause ofעַל דְּבַרSarah,שָׂרָהAbraham’sאַבְרָהָםwife.אֵשֶׁת
