The wordהַדָּבָרthatאֲשֶׁרcameהָיָהto Jeremiahאֶל יִרְמְיָהוּfromמֵאֵתYHWHיְהוָהin the daysבִּימֵיof Jehoiakimיְהוֹיָקִיםsonבֶּןof Josiah,יֹאשִׁיָּהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Goהָלוֹךְto the houseאֶל בֵּיתof the Rechabites,הָרֵכָבִיםand speakוְדִבַּרְתָּwith them,אוֹתָםand bring themוַהֲבִאוֹתָםto the houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָהinto oneאֶל אַחַתof the chambers,הַלְּשָׁכוֹתand give themוְ אוֹתָםwineיָיִןto drink.”הִשְׁקִיתָ
So I tookוָאֶקַּחJaazaniahאֶת יַאֲזַנְיָהsonבֶןof Jeremiah,יִרְמְיָהוּsonבֶּןof Habazziniah,חֲבַצִּנְיָהand his brothersוְאֶת אֶחָיוand allוְאֶת כָּלhis sons,בָּנָיוand the wholeוְאֵת כָּלhouseבֵּיתof the Rechabites,הָרֵכָבִים
and I brought themוָאָבִא אֹתָםinto the houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָהinto the chamberאֶל לִשְׁכַּתof the sonsבְּנֵיof Hananחָנָןsonבֶּןof Igdaliah,יִגְדַּלְיָהוּthe manאִישׁof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםwhich wasאֲשֶׁרnext toאֵצֶלthe chamberלִשְׁכַּתof the princes,הַשָּׂרִיםwhich wasאֲשֶׁרaboveמִמַּעַל לְthe chamberלִשְׁכַּתof Maaseiahמַעֲשֵׂיָהוּsonבֶןof Shallum,שַׁלֻּםkeeperשֹׁמֵרof the threshold.הַסַּף
And I setוָאֶתֵּןbeforeלִפְנֵיthe sonsבְּנֵיof the houseבֵיתof the Rechabitesהָרֵכָבִיםjarsגְּבִעִיםfullמְלֵאִיםof wine,יַיִןand cups,וְכֹסוֹתand I saidוָאֹמַרto them,אֲלֵיהֶם“Drinkשְׁתוּwine.”יָיִן
But they said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“We will notלֹאdrinkנִשְׁתֶּהwine,יָּיִןforכִּיJonadabיוֹנָדָבsonבֶּןof Rechab,רֵכָבour father,אָבִינוּcommanded us,צִוָּה עָלֵינוּsaying,לֵאמֹר‘You shall notלֹאdrinkתִשְׁתּוּwine,יַיִןyouאַתֶּםor your sons,וּבְנֵיכֶםforever;עַד עוֹלָם
and a houseוּבַיִתyou shall notלֹאbuild,תִבְנוּand seedוְזֶרַעyou shall notלֹאsow,תִזְרָעוּand a vineyardוְכֶרֶםyou shall notלֹאplant,תִטָּעוּnorוְלֹאhave any,יִהְיֶה לָכֶםbutכִּיin tentsבָּאֳהָלִיםyou shall liveתֵּשְׁבוּallכָּלyour days,יְמֵיכֶםso thatלְמַעַןyou may liveתִּחְיוּmany daysיָמִים רַבִּיםon the faceעַל פְּנֵיof the landהָאֲדָמָהwhereאֲשֶׁר שָׁםyouאַתֶּםreside as aliens.’גָּרִים
And we have obeyedוַנִּשְׁמַעthe voiceבְּקוֹלof Jonadabיְהוֹנָדָבsonבֶּןof Rechab,רֵכָבour father,אָבִינוּin allלְכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרhe commanded us,צִוָּנוּnotלְבִלְתִּיto drinkשְׁתוֹתwineיַיִןallכָּלour days,יָמֵינוּwe,אֲנַחְנוּour wives,נָשֵׁינוּour sons,בָּנֵינוּand our daughters,וּבְנֹתֵינוּ
and notוּלְבִלְתִּיto buildבְּנוֹתhousesבָּתִּיםto live in;לְשִׁבְתֵּנוּand vineyardוְכֶרֶםor fieldוְשָׂדֶהor seedוָזֶרַעwe do notלֹאhave;יִהְיֶה לָּנוּ
but we have livedוַנֵּשֶׁבin tents,בָּאֳהָלִיםand have obeyedוַנִּשְׁמַעand doneוַנַּעַשׂaccording to allכְּכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרJonadabיוֹנָדָבour fatherאָבִינוּcommanded us.צִוָּנוּ
But it happened,וַיְהִיwhen Nebuchadnezzarבַּ נְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּרkingמֶלֶךְof Babylonבָּבֶלcame upעֲלוֹתagainst the land,אֶל הָאָרֶץthat we said,וַנֹּאמֶר‘Come,בֹּאוּand let us goוְנָבוֹאto Jerusalem,יְרוּשָׁלִַםbecause of the armyמִפְּנֵי חֵילof the Chaldeansהַכַּשְׂדִּיםand because of the armyוּמִפְּנֵי חֵילof Aram’;אֲרָםso we have livedוַנֵּשֶׁבin Jerusalem.”בִּירוּשָׁלִָם
Then the wordוַיְהִי דְּבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcame to Jeremiah,אֶל יִרְמְיָהוּsaying,לֵאמֹר
“ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWHיְהוָהTsevaot,צְבָאוֹתthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵלGoהָלֹךְand sayוְאָמַרְתָּto the menלְאִישׁof Judahיְהוּדָהand to the inhabitantsוּלְיוֹשְׁבֵיof Jerusalem:יְרוּשָׁלִָםWill you notהֲלוֹאreceiveתִקְחוּcorrectionמוּסָרby listeningלִשְׁמֹעַto my words?אֶל דְּבָרַיdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH.יְהוָה
The wordsאֶת דִּבְרֵיof Jonadabיְהוֹנָדָבsonבֶּןof Rechabרֵכָבhave been carried out,הוּקַםwhichאֲשֶׁרhe commandedצִוָּהhis sons,אֶת בָּנָיוnotלְבִלְתִּיto drinkשְׁתוֹתwine;יַיִןand they have notוְלֹאdrunkשָׁתוּto this day,עַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּהforכִּיthey have obeyedשָׁמְעוּthe commandmentאֵת מִצְוַתof their father.אֲבִיהֶםBut Iוְאָנֹכִיhave spokenדִּבַּרְתִּיto you,אֲלֵיכֶםrising earlyהַשְׁכֵּםand speaking,וְדַבֵּרand you have notוְלֹאlistenedשְׁמַעְתֶּםto me.אֵלָי
And I have sentוָאֶשְׁלַחto youאֲלֵיכֶםallאֶת כָּלmy servantsעֲבָדַיthe prophets,הַנְּבִאִיםrising earlyהַשְׁכֵּיםand sending,וְשָׁלֹחַsaying,לֵאמֹר‘Turn back,שֻׁבוּplease,נָאeach oneאִישׁfrom his evilהָרָעָהway,מִדַּרְכּוֹand make goodוְהֵיטִיבוּyour deeds,מַעַלְלֵיכֶםand do notוְאַלgoתֵּלְכוּafterאַחֲרֵיotherאֲחֵרִיםgodsאֱלֹהִיםto serve them;לְעָבְדָםand you will liveוּשְׁבוּon the landאֶל הָאֲדָמָהthatאֲשֶׁרI gaveנָתַתִּיto youלָכֶםand to your fathers’;וְלַאֲבֹתֵיכֶםbut you have notוְלֹאinclinedהִטִּיתֶםyour earאֶת אָזְנְכֶםorוְלֹאlistenedשְׁמַעְתֶּםto me.אֵלָי
Forכִּיthe sonsבְּנֵיof Jonadabיְהוֹנָדָבsonבֶּןof Rechabרֵכָבhave carried outהֵקִימוּthe commandmentאֶת מִצְוַתthatאֲשֶׁרtheir fatherאֲבִיהֶםcommanded them,צִוָּםbut this peopleוְהָעָם הַזֶּהhas notלֹאlistenedשָׁמְעוּto me.אֵלָי
ThereforeלָכֵןthusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH,יְהוָהthe ElohimאֱלֹהֵיTsevaot,צְבָאוֹתthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵלLook, I amהִנְנִיbringingמֵבִיאon Judahאֶל יְהוּדָהand on allוְאֶל כָּלthe inhabitantsיוֹשְׁבֵיof Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםallאֵת כָּלthe evilהָרָעָהthatאֲשֶׁרI have spokenדִּבַּרְתִּיagainst them,עֲלֵיהֶםbecauseיַעַןI spokeדִּבַּרְתִּיto themאֲלֵיהֶםand they did notוְלֹאlisten,שָׁמֵעוּand I calledוָאֶקְרָאto themלָהֶםand they did notוְלֹאanswer.”עָנוּ
And to the houseוּלְבֵיתof the RechabitesהָרֵכָבִיםJeremiahיִרְמְיָהוּsaid,אָמַר“ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWHיְהוָהTsevaot,צְבָאוֹתthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵלBecauseיַעַן אֲשֶׁרyou have obeyedשְׁמַעְתֶּםthe commandmentעַל מִצְוַתof Jonadabיְהוֹנָדָבyour father,אֲבִיכֶםand keptוַתִּשְׁמְרוּallאֶת כָּלhis commandments,מִצְוֺתָיוand doneוַתַּעֲשׂוּaccording to allכְּכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרhe commanded you,צִוָּה אֶתְכֶם
thereforeלָכֵןthusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWHיְהוָהTsevaot,צְבָאוֹתthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵלJonadabלְיוֹנָדָבsonבֶּןof Rechabרֵכָבwill never lackלֹא יִכָּרֵתa manאִישׁstandingעֹמֵדbefore meלְפָנַיall the days.”כָּל הַיָּמִים
