Jeremiah 36

And it happenedוַיְהִיin the fourthהָרְבִיעִתyearבַּשָּׁנָהof Jehoiakimלִיהוֹיָקִיםsonבֶּןof Josiah,יֹאשִׁיָּהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהthat this wordהַדָּבָר הַזֶּהcameהָיָהto Jeremiahאֶל יִרְמְיָהוּfromמֵאֵתYHWH,יְהוָהsaying,לֵאמֹר

“Takeקַחfor yourselfלְךָa scrollמְגִלַּתof a book,סֵפֶרand writeוְכָתַבְתָּon itאֵלֶיהָallאֵת כָּלthe wordsהַדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרI have spoken to youדִּבַּרְתִּי אֵלֶיךָconcerning Israelעַל יִשְׂרָאֵלand concerning Judahוְעַל יְהוּדָהand concerning allוְעַל כָּלthe nations,הַגּוֹיִםfrom the dayמִיּוֹםI spoke to you,דִּבַּרְתִּי אֵלֶיךָfrom the daysמִימֵיof Josiahיֹאשִׁיָּהוּuntil this day.וְעַד הַיּוֹם הַזֶּה

Perhapsאוּלַיthe houseבֵּיתof Judahיְהוּדָהwill hearיִשְׁמְעוּallאֵת כָּלthe evilהָרָעָהthatאֲשֶׁרIאָנֹכִיam planningחֹשֵׁבto doלַעֲשׂוֹתto them,לָהֶםso thatלְמַעַןthey may turn back,יָשׁוּבוּeach oneאִישׁfrom his evilהָרָעָהway,מִדַּרְכּוֹand I will forgiveוְסָלַחְתִּיtheir iniquityלַעֲוֺנָםand their sin.”וּלְחַטָּאתָם

And Jeremiahוַ יִרְמְיָהוּcalledיִּקְרָאBaruchאֶת בָּרוּךְsonבֶּןof Neriah,נֵרִיָּהand Baruchוַ בָּרוּךְwroteיִּכְתֹּבfrom the mouthמִפִּיof Jeremiahיִרְמְיָהוּallאֵת כָּלthe wordsדִּבְרֵיof YHWHיְהוָהthatאֲשֶׁרhe had spoken to himדִּבֶּר אֵלָיוon a scrollעַל מְגִלַּתof a book.סֵפֶר

And Jeremiahוַ יִרְמְיָהוּcommandedיְצַוֶּהBaruch,אֶת בָּרוּךְsaying,לֵאמֹר“Iאֲנִיam restrained;עָצוּרI cannotלֹא אוּכַלgoלָבוֹאinto the houseבֵּיתof YHWH.יְהוָה

So youאַתָּהgoוּבָאתָand readוְקָרָאתָfrom the scrollבַמְּגִלָּהthatאֲשֶׁרyou have writtenכָּתַבְתָּfrom my mouthמִפִּיthe wordsאֶת דִּבְרֵיof YHWHיְהוָהin the earsבְּאָזְנֵיof the peopleהָעָםin the houseבֵּיתof YHWHיְהוָהon a dayבְּיוֹםof fasting;צוֹםand alsoוְגַםin the earsבְּאָזְנֵיof allכָלJudahיְהוּדָהwho comeהַבָּאִיםfrom their citiesמֵעָרֵיהֶםyou shall read them.תִּקְרָאֵם

Perhapsאוּלַיtheir supplicationתְּחִנָּתָםwill fallתִּפֹּלbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהand they will turn back,וְיָשֻׁבוּeach oneאִישׁfrom his evilהָרָעָהway,מִדַּרְכּוֹforכִּיgreat isגָדוֹלthe angerהָאַףand the furyוְהַחֵמָהthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhas spokenדִּבֶּרagainst this people.”אֶל הָעָם הַזֶּה

And Baruchוַ בָּרוּךְsonבֶּןof Neriahנֵרִיָּהdidיַּעַשׂaccording to allכְּכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרJeremiahיִרְמְיָהוּthe prophetהַנָּבִיאcommanded him,צִוָּהוּreadingלִקְרֹאin the bookבַסֵּפֶרthe wordsדִּבְרֵיof YHWHיְהוָהin the houseבֵּיתof YHWH.יְהֹוָה

And it happenedוַיְהִיin the fifthהַחֲמִשִׁיתyearבַשָּׁנָהof Jehoiakimלִיהוֹיָקִיםsonבֶּןof Josiah,יֹאשִׁיָּהוּkingמֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהin the ninthהַתְּשִׁעִיmonth,בַּחֹדֶשׁthat they proclaimedקָרְאוּa fastצוֹםbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהfor allכָּלthe peopleהָעָםin Jerusalemבִּירוּשָׁלִָםand allוְכָלthe peopleהָעָםwho cameהַבָּאִיםfrom the citiesמֵעָרֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהto Jerusalem.בִּירוּשָׁלִָם

And Baruchוַ בָרוּךְreadיִּקְרָאin the bookבַּסֵּפֶרthe wordsאֶת דִּבְרֵיof Jeremiahיִרְמְיָהוּin the houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָהin the chamberבְּלִשְׁכַּתof Gemariahגְּמַרְיָהוּsonבֶןof Shaphanשָׁפָןthe scribe,הַסֹּפֵרin the upperהָעֶלְיוֹןcourt,בֶּחָצֵרat the entranceפֶּתַחof the NewהֶחָדָשׁGateשַׁעַרof the houseבֵּיתof YHWH,יְהוָהin the earsבְּאָזְנֵיof allכָּלthe people.הָעָם

And Micaiahוַ מִכָיְהוּsonבֶןof Gemariah,גְּמַרְיָהוּsonבֶןof Shaphan,שָׁפָןheardיִּשְׁמַעallאֶת כָּלthe wordsדִּבְרֵיof YHWHיְהוָהfrom the book,מֵעַל הַסֵּפֶר

and he went downוַיֵּרֶדto the houseבֵּיתof the king,הַמֶּלֶךְinto the chamberעַל לִשְׁכַּתof the scribe;הַסֹּפֵרand look,וְהִנֵּהthereשָׁםallכָּלthe princesהַשָּׂרִיםwere sitting:יוֹשְׁבִיםElishamaאֱלִישָׁמָעthe scribe,הַסֹּפֵרand Delaiahוּדְלָיָהוּsonבֶןof Shemaiah,שְׁמַעְיָהוּand Elnathanוְאֶלְנָתָןsonבֶּןof Achbor,עַכְבּוֹרand Gemariahוּגְמַרְיָהוּsonבֶןof Shaphan,שָׁפָןand Zedekiahוְצִדְקִיָּהוּsonבֶןof Hananiah,חֲנַנְיָהוּand allוְכָלthe princes.הַשָּׂרִים

And Micaiahמִכָיְהוּtoldוַיַּגֵּדthemלָהֶםallאֵת כָּלthe wordsהַדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרhe had heardשָׁמֵעַwhen Baruchבִּ בָרוּךְreadקְרֹאfrom the bookבַּסֵּפֶרin the earsבְּאָזְנֵיof the people.הָעָם

Then allוַ כָלthe princesהַשָּׂרִיםsentיִּשְׁלְחוּto Baruchאֶל בָּרוּךְJehudiאֶת יְהוּדִיsonבֶּןof Nethaniah,נְתַנְיָהוּsonבֶּןof Shelemiah,שֶׁלֶמְיָהוּsonבֶןof Cushi,כּוּשִׁיsaying,לֵאמֹר“The scrollהַמְּגִלָּהfrom whichאֲשֶׁר בָּהּyou readקָרָאתָin the earsבְּאָזְנֵיof the people,הָעָםtake itקָחֶנָּהin your handבְיָדְךָand come.”וָלֵךְSo Baruchוַ בָּרוּךְsonבֶּןof Neriahנֵרִיָּהוּtookיִּקַּחthe scrollאֶת הַמְּגִלָּהin his handבְּיָדוֹand cameוַיָּבֹאto them.אֲלֵיהֶם

And they saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto him,אֵלָיו“Sit down,שֵׁבplease,נָאand read itוּקְרָאֶנָּהin our ears.”בְּאָזְנֵינוּAnd Baruchוַ בָרוּךְread itיִּקְרָאin their ears.בְּאָזְנֵיהֶם

And it happened,וַיְהִיwhen they heardכְּשָׁמְעָםallאֶת כָּלthe words,הַדְּבָרִיםthat they turned in dread,פָּחֲדוּeach oneאִישׁto his companion,אֶל רֵעֵהוּand they saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto Baruch,אֶל בָּרוּךְ“We must surely tellהַגֵּיד נַגִּידthe kingלַמֶּלֶךְallאֵת כָּלthese words.”הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה

And they askedשָׁאֲלוּBaruch,וְאֶת בָּרוּךְsaying,לֵאמֹר“Tellהַגֶּדus,לָנוּplease,נָאhowאֵיךְdid you writeכָּתַבְתָּallאֶת כָּלthese wordsהַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּהfrom his mouth?”מִפִּיו

And Baruchבָּרוּךְsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,לָהֶם“From his mouthמִפִּיוhe would dictateיִקְרָאto meאֵלַיallאֵת כָּלthese words,הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּהand Iוַאֲנִיwould writeכֹּתֵבon the bookעַל הַסֵּפֶרwith ink.”בַּדְּיוֹ

And the princesוַ הַשָּׂרִיםsaidיֹּאמְרוּto Baruch,אֶל בָּרוּךְ“Go,לֵךְhide,הִסָּתֵרyouאַתָּהand Jeremiah,וְיִרְמְיָהוּand let no oneוְאִישׁ אַלknowיֵדַעwhereאֵיפֹהyou are.”אַתֶּם

And they went inוַיָּבֹאוּto the kingאֶל הַמֶּלֶךְto the court,חָצֵרָהbut the scrollוְאֶת הַמְּגִלָּהthey had depositedהִפְקִדוּin the chamberבְּלִשְׁכַּתof Elishamaאֱלִישָׁמָעthe scribe;הַסֹּפֵרand they toldוַיַּגִּידוּin the earsבְּאָזְנֵיof the kingהַמֶּלֶךְallאֵת כָּלthe words.הַדְּבָרִים

And the kingהַמֶּלֶךְsentוַיִּשְׁלַחJehudiאֶת יְהוּדִיto getלָקַחַתthe scroll,אֶת הַמְּגִלָּהand he got itוַיִּקָּחֶהָfrom the chamberמִלִּשְׁכַּתof Elishamaאֱלִישָׁמָעthe scribe;הַסֹּפֵרand Jehudiיְהוּדִיread itוַיִּקְרָאֶהָin the earsבְּאָזְנֵיof the kingהַמֶּלֶךְand in the earsוּבְאָזְנֵיof allכָּלthe princesהַשָּׂרִיםwho were standingהָעֹמְדִיםbeside the king.מֵעַל הַמֶּלֶךְ

Now the kingוְהַמֶּלֶךְwas sittingיוֹשֵׁבin the winterהַחֹרֶףhouseבֵּיתin the ninthהַתְּשִׁיעִיmonth,בַּחֹדֶשׁwith the brazierוְאֶת הָאָחburningמְבֹעָרֶתbefore him.לְפָנָיו

And it happened,וַיְהִיwhenever Jehudiכִּ יְהוּדִיreadקְרוֹאthreeשָׁלֹשׁor fourוְאַרְבָּעָהcolumns,דְּלָתוֹתthe kingwould cut them offיִקְרָעֶהָwith the razorבְּתַעַרof the scribeהַסֹּפֵרandוְthrow themהַשְׁלֵךְinto the fireאֶל הָאֵשׁthat wasאֲשֶׁרin the brazier,אֶל הָאָחuntilעַדthe wholeכָּלscrollהַמְּגִלָּהwas consumedתֹּםin the fireעַל הָאֵשׁthat wasאֲשֶׁרin the brazier.עַל הָאָח

And they were notוְלֹאafraid,פָחֲדוּnorוְלֹאdid they tearקָרְעוּtheir garments,אֶת בִּגְדֵיהֶםthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְor anyוְכָלof his servantsעֲבָדָיוwho heardהַשֹּׁמְעִיםallאֵת כָּלthese words.הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּה

And even thoughוְגַםElnathanאֶלְנָתָןand Delaiahוּדְלָיָהוּand Gemariahוּגְמַרְיָהוּpleadedהִפְגִּעוּwith the kingבַמֶּלֶךְnotלְבִלְתִּיto burnשְׂרֹףthe scroll,אֶת הַמְּגִלָּהhe did notוְלֹאlistenשָׁמַעto them.אֲלֵיהֶם

And the kingהַמֶּלֶךְcommandedוַיְצַוֶּהJerahmeelאֶת יְרַחְמְאֵלthe king'sהַמֶּלֶךְsonבֶּןand Seraiahוְאֶת שְׂרָיָהוּsonבֶןof Azrielעַזְרִיאֵלand Shelemiahוְאֶת שֶׁלֶמְיָהוּsonבֶּןof Abdeelעַבְדְּאֵלto seizeלָקַחַתBaruchאֶת בָּרוּךְthe scribeהַסֹּפֵרand Jeremiahוְאֵת יִרְמְיָהוּthe prophet;הַנָּבִיאbutוַYHWHיְהוָהhid them.יַּסְתִּרֵם

And the wordוַיְהִי דְבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcame to Jeremiah,אֶל יִרְמְיָהוּafterאַחֲרֵיthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְhad burnedשְׂרֹףthe scrollאֶת הַמְּגִלָּהand the wordsוְאֶת הַדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרBaruchבָּרוּךְhad writtenכָּתַבfrom the mouthמִפִּיof Jeremiah,יִרְמְיָהוּsaying,לֵאמֹר

“Againשׁוּבtakeקַחfor yourselfלְךָanotherאַחֶרֶתscroll,מְגִלָּהand writeוּכְתֹבon itעָלֶיהָallאֵת כָּלthe formerהָרִאשֹׁנִיםwordsהַדְּבָרִיםthatאֲשֶׁרwereהָיוּon the firstהָרִאשֹׁנָהscroll,עַל הַמְּגִלָּהwhichאֲשֶׁרJehoiakimיְהוֹיָקִיםkingמֶלֶךְof Judahיְהוּדָהburned.שָׂרַף

And concerning Jehoiakimוְעַל יְהוֹיָקִיםkingמֶלֶךְof Judahיְהוּדָהyou shall say,תֹּאמַר‘ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH:יְהוָהYouאַתָּהhave burnedשָׂרַפְתָּthis scroll,אֶת הַמְּגִלָּה הַזֹּאתsaying,לֵאמֹר“Whyמַדּוּעַhave you writtenכָּתַבְתָּon it,עָלֶיהָsaying,לֵאמֹרThe kingמֶלֶךְof Babylonבָּבֶלwill certainly comeבֹּא יָבוֹאand destroyוְהִשְׁחִיתthis land,אֶת הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאתand makeוְהִשְׁבִּיתhuman beingאָדָםand livestockוּבְהֵמָהceaseהִשְׁבִּיתfrom it?”מִמֶּנָּה

ThereforeלָכֵןthusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWHיְהוָהconcerning Jehoiakimעַל יְהוֹיָקִיםkingמֶלֶךְof Judah:יְהוּדָהHe will notלֹאhaveיִהְיֶה לּוֹone to sitיוֹשֵׁבon the throneעַל כִּסֵּאof David,דָוִדand his corpseוְנִבְלָתוֹwill beתִּהְיֶהthrown outמֻשְׁלֶכֶתto the heatלַחֹרֶבby dayבַּיּוֹםand to the frostוְלַקֶּרַחby night.בַּלָּיְלָה

And I will punishוּפָקַדְתִּיhimעָלָיוand his offspringוְעַל זַרְעוֹand his servantsוְעַל עֲבָדָיוfor their iniquity;אֶת עֲוֺנָםand I will bringוְהֵבֵאתִיon them,עֲלֵיהֶםand on the inhabitantsוְעַל יֹשְׁבֵיof Jerusalem,יְרוּשָׁלִַםand on the menוְאֶל אִישׁof Judah,יְהוּדָהallאֵת כָּלthe evilהָרָעָהthatאֲשֶׁרI have spokenדִּבַּרְתִּיagainst them;אֲלֵיהֶםbut they did notוְלֹאlisten.’”שָׁמֵעוּ

And Jeremiahוְיִרְמְיָהוּtookלָקַחanotherאַחֶרֶתscrollמְגִלָּהand gave itוַיִּתְּנָהּto Baruchאֶל בָּרוּךְsonבֶּןof Neriah,נֵרִיָּהוּthe scribe;הַסֹּפֵרand he wroteוַיִּכְתֹּבon itעָלֶיהָfrom the mouthמִפִּיof Jeremiahיִרְמְיָהוּallאֵת כָּלthe wordsדִּבְרֵיof the bookהַסֵּפֶרthatאֲשֶׁרJehoiakimיְהוֹיָקִיםkingמֶלֶךְof Judahיְהוּדָהhad burnedשָׂרַףin the fire;בָּאֵשׁand besides,וְעוֹדthere were addedנוֹסַףto themעֲלֵיהֶםmanyרַבִּיםwordsדְּבָרִיםlike them.כָּהֵמָּה
