And Kingוַ מֶלֶךְZedekiahצִדְקִיָּהוּsonבֶּןof Josiahיֹאשִׁיָּהוּreignedיִּמְלָךְin placeתַּחַתof Coniahכָּנְיָהוּsonבֶּןof Jehoiakim,יְהוֹיָקִיםwhomאֲשֶׁרNebuchadnezzarנְבוּכַדְרֶאצַּרkingמֶלֶךְof Babylonבָּבֶלmade kingהִמְלִיךְin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Judah.יְהוּדָה
But neither heוְלֹא הוּאnor his servantsוַעֲבָדָיוnor the peopleוְעַםof the landהָאָרֶץlistenedשָׁמַעto the wordsאֶל דִּבְרֵיof YHWHיְהוָהthatאֲשֶׁרhe spokeדִּבֶּרthroughבְּיַדJeremiahיִרְמְיָהוּthe prophet.הַנָּבִיא
And Kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְZedekiahצִדְקִיָּהוּsentיִּשְׁלַחJehucalאֶת יְהוּכַלsonבֶּןof Shelemiahשֶׁלֶמְיָהand Zephaniahוְאֶת צְפַנְיָהוּsonבֶןof Maaseiahמַעֲשֵׂיָהthe priestהַכֹּהֵןto Jeremiahאֶל יִרְמְיָהוּthe prophet,הַנָּבִיאsaying,לֵאמֹר“Pray,הִתְפַּלֶּלplease,נָאfor usבַעֲדֵנוּto YHWHאֶל יְהוָהour Elohim.”אֱלֹהֵינוּ
Now Jeremiahוְיִרְמְיָהוּwas coming inבָּאand going outוְיֹצֵאamongבְּתוֹךְthe people,הָעָםand they had notוְלֹאputנָתְנוּhimאֹתוֹin the prison.בֵּית הַכְּלוּא
And the armyוְחֵילof Pharaohפַּרְעֹהhad come outיָצָאof Egypt,מִמִּצְרָיִםand the Chaldeansוַ הַכַּשְׂדִּיםwho were besiegingהַצָּרִיםJerusalemעַל יְרוּשָׁלִַםheardיִּשְׁמְעוּthe news of them,אֶת שִׁמְעָםand they withdrewוַיֵּעָלוּfromמֵעַלJerusalem.יְרוּשָׁלִָם
And the wordוַ דְּבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcameיְהִיto Jeremiahאֶל יִרְמְיָהוּthe prophet,הַנָּבִיאsaying,לֵאמֹר
“ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH,יְהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵלThusכֹּהyou will sayתֹאמְרוּto the kingאֶל מֶלֶךְof Judah,יְהוּדָהwho sendsהַשֹּׁלֵחַyouאֶתְכֶםto meאֵלַיto inquire of me:לְדָרְשֵׁנִי‘Look,הִנֵּהthe armyחֵילof Pharaohפַּרְעֹהthat has come outהַיֹּצֵאto youלָכֶםto help youלְעֶזְרָהis returningשָׁבto its land,לְאַרְצוֹto Egypt.מִצְרָיִם
And the Chaldeansוְ הַכַּשְׂדִּיםwill returnשָׁבוּand fightוְנִלְחֲמוּagainst this city,עַל הָעִיר הַזֹּאתand they will capture itוּלְכָדֻהָand burn itוּשְׂרָפֻהָwith fire.’בָאֵשׁ
ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH:יְהוָהDo notאַלdeceiveתַּשִּׁאוּyour souls,נַפְשֹׁתֵיכֶםsaying,לֵאמֹר‘The Chaldeansהַכַּשְׂדִּיםwill surely go awayהָלֹךְ יֵלְכוּfrom us,’מֵעָלֵינוּforכִּיthey will notלֹאgo away.יֵלֵכוּ
Forכִּיeven ifאִםyou struck downהִכִּיתֶםthe wholeכָּלarmyחֵילof the Chaldeansכַּשְׂדִּיםwho are fightingהַנִּלְחָמִיםagainst you,אִתְּכֶםand there remainedוְנִשְׁאֲרוּamong themבָםwoundedמְדֻקָּרִיםmen,אֲנָשִׁיםeachאִישׁin his tent,בְּאָהֳלוֹthey would rise upיָקוּמוּand burnוְשָׂרְפוּthis cityאֶת הָעִיר הַזֹּאתwith fire.”בָּאֵשׁ
And it happened,וְהָיָהwhenבְּthe armyחֵילof the ChaldeansהַכַּשְׂדִּיםwithdrewהֵעָלוֹתfromמֵעַלJerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִָםbecause ofמִפְּנֵיthe armyחֵילof Pharaoh,פַּרְעֹה
that Jeremiahיִרְמְיָהוּwent outוַיֵּצֵאfrom Jerusalemמִירוּשָׁלִַםto goלָלֶכֶתto the landאֶרֶץof Benjaminבִּנְיָמִןto have a shareלַחֲלִקfrom thereמִשָּׁםamongבְּתוֹךְthe people.הָעָם
He wasוַיְהִי הוּאat the gateבְּשַׁעַרof Benjamin,בִּנְיָמִןand there wasוְשָׁםa captainבַּעַלof the guardפְּקִדֻתwhose name wasוּשְׁמוֹIrijahיִרְאִיָּיהsonבֶּןof Shelemiahשֶׁלֶמְיָהsonבֶּןof Hananiah;חֲנַנְיָהand he seizedוַיִּתְפֹּשׂJeremiahאֶת יִרְמְיָהוּthe prophet,הַנָּבִיאsaying,לֵאמֹר“Toאֶלthe Chaldeansהַכַּשְׂדִּיםyouאַתָּהare deserting!”נֹפֵל
And Jeremiahוַ יִרְמְיָהוּsaid,יֹּאמֶר“Falsehood!שֶׁקֶרI am notאֵינֶנִּיdesertingנֹפֵלto the Chaldeans.”עַל הַכַּשְׂדִּיםBut he did notוְלֹאlistenשָׁמַעto him,אֵלָיוand Irijahוַ יִרְאִיָּיהseizedיִּתְפֹּשׂJeremiahבְּיִרְמְיָהוּand brought himוַיְבִאֵהוּto the princes.אֶל הַשָּׂרִים
And the princesוַ הַשָּׂרִיםwere angryיִּקְצְפוּwith Jeremiah,עַל יִרְמְיָהוּand they struckוְהִכּוּhimאֹתוֹand putוְנָתְנוּhimאוֹתוֹin the houseבֵּיתof imprisonment,הָאֵסוּרin the houseבֵּיתof Jonathanיְהוֹנָתָןthe scribe,הַסֹּפֵרforכִּיthey had madeעָשׂוּitאֹתוֹintoלְthe prison.בֵית הַכֶּלֶא
ForכִּיJeremiahיִרְמְיָהוּhad comeבָאintoאֶלthe houseבֵּיתof the cisternהַבּוֹרand intoוְאֶלthe vaults,הַחֲנֻיוֹתand Jeremiahוַ יִרְמְיָהוּstayedיֵּשֶׁבthereשָׁםmanyרַבִּיםdays.יָמִים
Then Kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְZedekiahצִדְקִיָּהוּsentיִּשְׁלַחand took him,וַיִּקָּחֵהוּand the kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְasked himיִּשְׁאָלֵהוּin his houseבְּבֵיתוֹin secretבַּסֵּתֶרand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Is thereהֲיֵשׁa wordדָּבָרfromמֵאֵתYHWH?”יְהוָהAnd Jeremiahוַ יִרְמְיָהוּsaid,יֹּאמֶר“There is.”יֵשׁAnd he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Into the handבְּיַדof the kingמֶלֶךְof Babylonבָּבֶלyou will be given.”תִּנָּתֵן
And Jeremiahוַ יִרְמְיָהוּsaidיֹּאמֶרto Kingאֶל הַמֶּלֶךְZedekiah,צִדְקִיָּהוּ“Whatמֶהsin have I committedחָטָאתִיagainst youלְךָor against your servantsוְלַעֲבָדֶיךָor against this people,וְלָעָם הַזֶּהthatכִּיyou have putנְתַתֶּםmeאוֹתִיinאֶלthe prison?בֵּית הַכֶּלֶא
And whereוְאַיֵּהare your prophetsנְבִיאֵיכֶםwhoאֲשֶׁרprophesiedנִבְּאוּto you,לָכֶםsaying,לֵאמֹר‘The kingמֶלֶךְof Babylonבָּבֶלwill notלֹאcomeיָבֹאagainst youעֲלֵיכֶםor against this land’?וְעַל הָאָרֶץ הַזֹּאת
And now,וְעַתָּהhear,שְׁמַעplease,נָאmy lordאֲדֹנִיthe king;הַמֶּלֶךְpleaseנָאlet my supplicationתְחִנָּתִיfallתִּפָּלbefore you,לְפָנֶיךָand do notוְאַלsend me backתְּשִׁבֵנִיto the houseבֵּיתof Jonathanיְהוֹנָתָןthe scribe,הַסֹּפֵרthat I may notוְלֹאdieאָמוּתthere.”שָׁם
And Kingוַ הַמֶּלֶךְZedekiahצִדְקִיָּהוּgave orders,יְצַוֶּהand they committedוַיַּפְקִדוּJeremiahאֶת יִרְמְיָהוּto the courtבַּחֲצַרof the guard,הַמַּטָּרָהand they gaveוְנָתֹןhimלוֹa loafכִכַּרof breadלֶחֶםdailyלַיּוֹםfrom the streetמִחוּץof the bakers,הָאֹפִיםuntilעַדallכָּלthe breadהַלֶּחֶםinמִןthe cityהָעִירwas used up.תֹּםSo Jeremiahוַ יִרְמְיָהוּstayedיֵּשֶׁבin the courtבַּחֲצַרof the guard.הַמַּטָּרָה
