And it happenedוַיְהִיafterאַחֲרֵיthisכֵןthat the sonsבְנֵיof Moabמוֹאָבand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Ammon,עַמּוֹןand with themוְעִמָּהֶםsome ofמֵthe Ammonites,הָעַמּוֹנִיםcameבָּאוּagainstעַלJehoshaphatיְהוֹשָׁפָטfor battle.לַמִּלְחָמָה
They cameוַיָּבֹאוּand toldוַיַּגִּידוּJehoshaphat,לִיהוֹשָׁפָטsaying,לֵאמֹר“A greatרָבmultitudeהָמוֹןis comingבָּאagainst youעָלֶיךָfrom beyondמֵעֵבֶרthe sea,לַיָּםfrom Aram;מֵאֲרָםand look,וְהִנָּthey areםin Hazazon-tamar,בְּחַצְצוֹן תָּמָרthat isהִיאEn-gedi.”עֵין גֶּדִי
Jehoshaphatיְהוֹשָׁפָטwas afraid,וַיִּרָאand setוַיִּתֵּןhis faceפָּנָיוto seekלִדְרוֹשׁYHWH,לַיהוָהand proclaimedוַיִּקְרָאa fastצוֹםthroughoutעַלallכָּלJudah.יְהוּדָה
Judahיְהוּדָהgatheredוַיִּקָּבְצוּto seek helpלְבַקֵּשׁfrom YHWH;מֵיְהוָהalsoגַּםfrom allמִכָּלthe citiesעָרֵיof Judahיְהוּדָהthey cameבָּאוּto seekלְבַקֵּשׁYHWH.יְהוָה
Jehoshaphatיְהוֹשָׁפָטstoodוַיַּעֲמֹדin the assemblyבִּקְהַלof Judahיְהוּדָהand Jerusalem,וִירוּשָׁלִַםin the houseבְּבֵיתof YHWH,יְהוָהbeforeלִפְנֵיthe newהַחֲדָשָׁהcourt,הֶחָצֵר
and said,וַיֹּאמַר“YHWH,יְהוָהElohimאֱלֹהֵיof our fathers,אֲבֹתֵינוּare you notהֲלֹא אַתָּהElohimהוּא אֱלֹהִיםin the heavens?בַּשָּׁמַיִםAnd youוְאַתָּהruleמוֹשֵׁלover allבְּכֹלthe kingdomsמַמְלְכוֹתof the nations;הַגּוֹיִםin your handוּבְיָדְךָare powerכֹּחַand might,וּגְבוּרָהand there is no oneוְאֵיןable to stand firmלְהִתְיַצֵּבagainst you.עִמְּךָ
Did you not,הֲלֹא אַתָּהour Elohim,אֱלֹהֵינוּdispossessהוֹרַשְׁתָּthe inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵיof thisהַזֹּאתlandהָאָרֶץfrom beforeמִלִּפְנֵיyour peopleעַמְּךָIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלand give itוַתִּתְּנָהּto the offspringלְזֶרַעof Abraham,אַבְרָהָםwho loved you,אֹהַבְךָforever?לְעוֹלָם
They livedוַיֵּשְׁבוּin itבָהּand builtוַיִּבְנוּfor youלְךָin itבָּהּa sanctuaryמִקְדָּשׁfor your name,לְשִׁמְךָsaying,לֵאמֹר
‘Ifאִםevilרָעָהcomesתָּבוֹאupon usעָלֵינוּ—sword,חֶרֶבjudgment,שְׁפוֹטor pestilenceוְדֶבֶרor famine—וְרָעָבwe will standנַעַמְדָהbeforeלִפְנֵיthisהַזֶּהhouseהַבַּיִתand before you,וּלְפָנֶיךָforכִּיyour nameשִׁמְךָis in thisבַּ הַזֶּהhouse,בַּיִתand we will cry outוְנִזְעַקto youאֵלֶיךָfrom our distress,מִצָּרָתֵנוּand you will hearוְתִשְׁמַעand save.’וְתוֹשִׁיעַ
And now,וְעַתָּהlook,הִנֵּהthe sonsבְנֵיof Ammonעַמּוֹןand Moabוּמוֹאָבand MountוְהַרSeir,שֵׂעִירamong whomאֲשֶׁר בָהֶםyou did notלֹאletנָתַתָּהIsraelלְיִשְׂרָאֵלcomeלָבוֹאwhen they cameבְּבֹאָםfrom the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt,מִצְרָיִםbutכִּיthey turned asideסָרוּfrom themמֵעֲלֵיהֶםand did notוְלֹאdestroy themהִשְׁמִידוּם
look,וְהִנֵּהtheyהֵםare repayingגֹּמְלִיםusעָלֵינוּby comingלָבוֹאto drive us outלְגָרְשֵׁנוּof your possessionמִיְּרֻשָּׁתְךָthatאֲשֶׁרyou gave us to possess.הוֹרַשְׁתָּנוּ
Our Elohim,אֱלֹהֵינוּwill you notהֲלֹאjudgeתִשְׁפָּטthem?בָּםForכִּיthere is noאֵיןpowerכֹּחַin usבָּנוּbeforeלִפְנֵיthisהַזֶּהgreatהָרָבmultitudeהֶהָמוֹןthat is comingהַבָּאagainst us,עָלֵינוּand weוַאֲנַחְנוּdo notלֹאknowנֵדַעwhatמַהto do,נַּעֲשֶׂהbutכִּיon youעָלֶיךָare our eyes.”עֵינֵינוּ
And allוְכָלJudahיְהוּדָהwas standingעֹמְדִיםbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהalsoגַּםtheir little ones,טַפָּםtheir wivesנְשֵׁיהֶםand their sons.וּבְנֵיהֶם
Then upon Jahazielוְיַחֲזִיאֵלsonבֶּןof Zechariah,זְכַרְיָהוּsonבֶּןof Benaiah,בְּנָיָהsonבֶּןof Jeiel,יְעִיאֵלsonבֶּןof Mattaniah,מַתַּנְיָהthe Levite,הַלֵּוִיofמִןthe sonsבְּנֵיof Asaph,אָסָףthe spiritרוּחַof YHWHיְהוָהcameהָיְתָה עָלָיוin the midstבְּתוֹךְof the assembly,הַקָּהָל
and he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Listen,הַקְשִׁיבוּallכָלJudahיְהוּדָהand inhabitantsוְיֹשְׁבֵיof Jerusalem,יְרוּשָׁלִַםand KingוְהַמֶּלֶךְJehoshaphat:יְהוֹשָׁפָטThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWHיְהוָהto you:לָכֶם‘You,אַתֶּםdo notאַלbe afraidתִּירְאוּand do notוְאַלbe dismayedתֵּחַתּוּbeforeמִפְּנֵיthisהַזֶּהgreatהָרָבmultitude,הֶהָמוֹןforכִּיthe warהַמִּלְחָמָהis notלֹאyours,לָכֶםbutכִּיElohim’s.לֵאלֹהִים
Tomorrowמָחָרgo downרְדוּagainst them;עֲלֵיהֶםlook,הִנָּtheyםare coming upעֹלִיםby the ascentבְּמַעֲלֵהof Ziz,הַצִּיץand you will findוּמְצָאתֶםthemאֹתָםat the endבְּסוֹףof the brook,הַנַּחַלfacingפְּנֵיthe wildernessמִדְבַּרof Jeruel.יְרוּאֵל
It is notלֹאfor youלָכֶםto fightלְהִלָּחֵםin this;בָּזֹאתpresent yourselves,הִתְיַצְּבוּstandעִמְדוּand seeוּרְאוּthe salvationיְשׁוּעַתof YHWHיְהוָהwith you,עִמָּכֶםJudahיְהוּדָהand Jerusalem.וִירוּשָׁלִַםDo notאַלbe afraidתִּירְאוּand do notוְאַלbe dismayed;תֵּחַתּוּtomorrowמָחָרgo outצְאוּbefore them,לִפְנֵיהֶםand YHWHוַיהוָהwill be with you.’”עִמָּכֶם
Jehoshaphatיְהוֹשָׁפָטbowedוַיִּקֹּדwith his faceאַפַּיִםto the ground,אָרְצָהand allוְכָלJudahיְהוּדָהand the inhabitantsוְיֹשְׁבֵיof JerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםfellנָפְלוּbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH,יְהוָהto bow downלְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺתto YHWH.לַיהוָה
The Levites,הַלְוִיִּםofמִןthe sonsבְּנֵיof the Kohathitesהַקְּהָתִיםand ofוּמִןthe sonsבְּנֵיof the Korahites,הַקָּרְחִיםstood upוַיָּקֻמוּto praiseלְהַלֵּלYHWH,לַיהוָהElohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלwith a voiceבְּקוֹלexceedinglyלְמָעְלָהloud.גָּדוֹל
They rose earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּימוּin the morningבַבֹּקֶרand went outוַיֵּצְאוּto the wildernessלְמִדְבַּרof Tekoa;תְּקוֹעַand as they went out,וּבְצֵאתָםJehoshaphatיְהוֹשָׁפָטstoodעָמַדand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Hearשְׁמָעוּme,נִיJudahיְהוּדָהand inhabitantsוְיֹשְׁבֵיof Jerusalem!יְרוּשָׁלִַםBelieveהַאֲמִינוּin YHWHבַּיהוָהyour Elohim,אֱלֹהֵיכֶםand you will stand firm;וְתֵאָמֵנוּbelieveהַאֲמִינוּin his prophets,בִנְבִיאָיוand you will prosper.”וְהַצְלִיחוּ
He took counselוַיִּוָּעַץwithאֶלthe peopleהָעָםand appointedוַיַּעֲמֵדsingersמְשֹׁרֲרִיםto YHWHלַיהוָהand men praisingוּמְהַלְלִיםin the splendorלְהַדְרַתof holiness,קֹדֶשׁas they went outבְּצֵאתbeforeלִפְנֵיthe equipped troops,הֶחָלוּץand saying,וְאֹמְרִים“Give thanksהוֹדוּto YHWH,לַיהוָהforכִּיhis loyal loveחַסְדּוֹis forever.”לְעוֹלָם
And at the timeוּבְעֵתthey beganהֵחֵלּוּwith shouts of joyבְרִנָּהand praise,וּתְהִלָּהYHWHיְהוָהsetנָתַןambushesמְאָרְבִיםagainstעַלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Ammon,עַמּוֹןMoabמוֹאָבand MountוְהַרSeir,שֵׂעִירwho were comingהַבָּאִיםagainst Judah;לִיהוּדָהand they were struck down.וַיִּנָּגֵפוּ
The sonsבְּנֵיof Ammonעַמּוֹןand Moabוּמוֹאָבrose upוַיַּעַמְדוּagainstעַלthe inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵיof MountהַרSeir,שֵׂעִירto devote them to destructionלְהַחֲרִיםand to destroy them;וּלְהַשְׁמִידand when they had finishedוּכְכַלּוֹתָםwith the inhabitantsבְּיוֹשְׁבֵיof Seir,שֵׂעִירthey helpedעָזְרוּeachאִישׁto destroyלְמַשְׁחִיתhis fellow.בְּרֵעֵהוּ
When Judahוִיהוּדָהcameבָּאtoעַלthe watchtowerהַמִּצְפֶּהof the wilderness,לַמִּדְבָּרthey turnedוַיִּפְנוּtowardאֶלthe multitude,הֶהָמוֹןand look,וְהִנָּthey wereםcorpsesפְּגָרִיםfallenנֹפְלִיםto the ground,אַרְצָהand there was noוְאֵיןescape.פְּלֵיטָה
Jehoshaphatיְהוֹשָׁפָטand his peopleוְעַמּוֹcameוַיָּבֹאto plunderלָבֹזtheir spoil,שְׁלָלָםand they foundוַיִּמְצְאוּamong themבָהֶםin abundanceלָרֹבgoodsוּרְכוּשׁand corpsesוּפְגָרִיםand preciousחֲמֻדוֹתobjects,וּכְלֵיand they stripped themוַיְנַצְּלוּfor themselvesלָהֶםuntilלְthey could carryמַשָּׂאno more;אֵיןand they wereוַיִּהְיוּthreeשְׁלוֹשָׁהdaysיָמִיםplunderingבֹּזְזִיםthe spoil,הַשָּׁלָלforכִּיitהוּאwas much.רַב
On the fourthהָרְבִעִיdayוּבַיּוֹםthey assembledנִקְהֲלוּin the Valleyלְעֵמֶקof Beracah,בְּרָכָהforכִּיthereשָׁםthey blessedבֵּרֲכוּYHWH;יְהוָהthereforeעַל כֵּןthey calledקָרְאוּthe nameשֵׁםof thatהַהוּאplaceהַמָּקוֹםthe Valleyעֵמֶקof Beracah,בְּרָכָהtoעַדthis day.הַיּוֹם
Allכָּלthe menאִישׁof Judahיְהוּדָהand Jerusalemוִירוּשָׁלִַםreturned,וַיָּשֻׁבוּwith Jehoshaphatוִיהוֹשָׁפָטat their head,בְּרֹאשָׁםto returnלָשׁוּבtoאֶלJerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםwith joy,בְּשִׂמְחָהforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhad made them rejoiceשִׂמְּחָםby delivering them fromמֵtheir enemies.אוֹיְבֵיהֶם
They cameוַיָּבֹאוּto Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםwith harpsבִּנְבָלִיםand lyresוּבְכִנֹּרוֹתand trumpets,וּבַחֲצֹצְרוֹתtoאֶלthe houseבֵּיתof YHWH.יְהוָה
The dreadפַּחַדof Elohimאֱלֹהִיםwasוַיְהִיonעַלallכָּלthe kingdomsמַמְלְכוֹתof the landsהָאֲרָצוֹתwhen they heardבְּשָׁמְעָםthatכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhad foughtנִלְחַםagainstעִםthe enemiesאוֹיְבֵיof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
The kingdomמַלְכוּתof Jehoshaphatיְהוֹשָׁפָטwas quiet,וַתִּשְׁקֹטand his Elohimאֱלֹהָיוgave him restוַיָּנַח לוֹall around.מִסָּבִיב
JehoshaphatיְהוֹשָׁפָטreignedוַיִּמְלֹךְoverעַלJudah.יְהוּדָהHe was thirty-fiveשְׁלֹשִׁים וְחָמֵשׁyears oldבֶּן שָׁנָהwhen he began to reign,בְּמָלְכוֹand twenty-fiveוְעֶשְׂרִים וְחָמֵשׁyearsשָׁנָהhe reignedמָלַךְin Jerusalem.בִּירוּשָׁלִַםAnd his mother’sוְ אִמּוֹnameשֵׁםwas Azubahעֲזוּבָהdaughterבַּתof Shilhi.שִׁלְחִי
