There wasוַיְהִיa famineרָעָבin the daysבִּימֵיof Davidדָוִדfor threeשָׁלֹשׁyears,שָׁנִיםyearשָׁנָהafterאַחֲרֵיyear;שָׁנָהand Davidוַ דָּוִדsoughtיְבַקֵּשׁthe faceפְּנֵיof YHWH.יְהוָהYHWHיְהוָהsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“It is because ofאֶלSaulשָׁאוּלand because ofוְאֶלhis houseבֵּיתof blood,הַדָּמִיםbecauseעַל אֲשֶׁרhe put to deathהֵמִיתthe Gibeonites.”הַגִּבְעֹנִים
The kingהַמֶּלֶךְcalledוַיִּקְרָאthe Gibeonitesלַגִּבְעֹנִיםand spokeוַיֹּאמֶרto them.אֲלֵיהֶם(Now the Gibeonitesוְהַגִּבְעֹנִיםwere notלֹאof the sonsמִבְּנֵיof Israel;יִשְׂרָאֵלtheyהֵמָּהwere ratherכִּי אִםof the remnantמִיֶּתֶרof the Amorite;הָאֱמֹרִיand the sonsוּבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלhad swornנִשְׁבְּעוּto them,לָהֶםbut Saulוַ שָׁאוּלsoughtיְבַקֵּשׁto strike themלְהַכֹּתָםin his zealבְּקַנֹּאתוֹfor the sonsלִבְנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלand Judah.)וִיהוּדָה
Davidדָּוִדsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלthe Gibeonites,הַגִּבְעֹנִים“Whatמָהshall I doאֶעֱשֶׂהfor you?לָכֶםAnd with whatוּבַמָּהshall I make expiation,אֲכַפֵּרso that you may blessוּבָרְכוּthe inheritanceנַחֲלַתof YHWH?”יְהוָה
The Gibeonitesהַגִּבְעֹנִיםsaidוַיֹּאמְרוּto him,לוֹ“We haveלָנוּno matter ofאֵיןsilverכֶּסֶףor goldוְזָהָבwithעִםSaulשָׁאוּלor withוְעִםhis house,בֵּיתוֹand we haveלָנוּnoוְאֵיןmanאִישׁto put to deathלְהָמִיתin Israel.”בְּיִשְׂרָאֵלHe said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Whateverמָהyouאַתֶּםsay,אֹמְרִיםI will doאֶעֱשֶׂהfor you.”לָכֶם
They saidוַיֹּאמְרוּtoאֶלthe king,הַמֶּלֶךְ“The manהָאִישׁwhoאֲשֶׁרconsumed usכִּלָּנוּand whoוַאֲשֶׁרplannedדִּמָּהagainst us,לָנוּso that we have been destroyedנִשְׁמַדְנוּfrom remainingמֵהִתְיַצֵּבin allבְּכָלthe territoryגְּבֻלof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵל
let sevenשִׁבְעָהmenאֲנָשִׁיםof his sonsמִבָּנָיוbe givenיֻתַּןto us,לָנוּand we will hang themוְהוֹקַעֲנוּםfor YHWHלַיהוָהat Gibeahבְּגִבְעַתof Saul,שָׁאוּלthe chosenבְּחִירof YHWH.”יְהוָהThe kingהַמֶּלֶךְsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Iאֲנִיwill give them.”אֶתֵּן

The kingהַמֶּלֶךְtookוַיִּקַּחthe twoשְׁנֵיsonsבְּנֵיof Rizpahרִצְפָּהdaughterבַתof Aiah,אַיָּהwhomאֲשֶׁרshe had borneיָלְדָהto Saul,לְשָׁאוּלArmoniאַרְמֹנִיandוְMephibosheth,מְפִבֹשֶׁתandוְthe fiveחֲמֵשֶׁתsonsבְּנֵיof Michalמִיכַלdaughterבַּתof Saul,שָׁאוּלwhomאֲשֶׁרshe had borneיָלְדָהto Adrielלְעַדְרִיאֵלsonבֶּןof Barzillaiבַּרְזִלַּיthe Meholathite,הַמְּחֹלָתִי
and he gave themוַיִּתְּנֵםinto the handבְּיַדof the Gibeonites,הַגִּבְעֹנִיםand they hanged themוַיֹּקִיעֻםon the mountainבָּהָרbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWH.יְהוָהThe seven of themוַ שְׁבַעְתָּםfellיִּפְּלוּtogether;יָחַדtheyוְהֵמָּהwere put to deathהֻמְתוּin the daysבִּימֵיof harvest,קָצִירin the first days,בָּרִאשֹׁנִיםat the beginningבִּתְחִלַּתof the barleyשְׂעֹרִיםharvest.קְצִיר
Rizpahרִצְפָּהdaughterבַתof Aiahאַיָּהtookוַתִּקַּחthe sackclothהַשַּׂקand spread itוַתַּטֵּהוּfor herselfלָהּonאֶלthe rock,הַצּוּרfrom the beginningמִתְּחִלַּתof harvestקָצִירuntilעַדwaterמַיִםpouredנִתַּךְon themעֲלֵיהֶםfromמִןthe heavens;הַשָּׁמָיִםand she did notוְלֹאallowנָתְנָהthe birdsעוֹףof the heavensהַשָּׁמַיִםto settleלָנוּחַon themעֲלֵיהֶםby day,יוֹמָםorוְthe animalsחַיַּתof the fieldהַשָּׂדֶהby night.לָיְלָה

He brought upוַיַּעַלfrom thereמִשָּׁםthe bonesעַצְמוֹתof Saulשָׁאוּלandוְthe bonesעַצְמוֹתof Jonathanיְהוֹנָתָןhis son,בְּנוֹand they gatheredוַיַּאַסְפוּthe bonesעַצְמוֹתof those who had been hanged.הַמּוּקָעִים
They buriedוַיִּקְבְּרוּthe bonesעַצְמוֹתof Saulשָׁאוּלand Jonathanוִיהוֹנָתָןhis sonבְּנוֹin the landבְּאֶרֶץof Benjamin,בִּנְיָמִןin Zela,בְּצֵלָעin the tombבְּקֶבֶרof Kishקִישׁhis father;אָבִיוand they didוַיַּעֲשׂוּallכֹּלthatאֲשֶׁרthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְcommanded.צִוָּהAnd afterאַחֲרֵיthatכֵןElohimאֱלֹהִיםheeded the pleaוַיֵּעָתֵרfor the land.לָאָרֶץ
There wasוַתְּהִיwarמִלְחָמָהagainעוֹדbetween the PhilistinesלַפְּלִשְׁתִּיםandאֶתIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלand Davidוַ דָּוִדwent down,יֵּרֶדand his servantsוַעֲבָדָיוwith him,עִמּוֹand they foughtוַיִּלָּחֲמוּthe Philistines;פְּלִשְׁתִּיםand Davidוַ דָּוִדgrew weary.יָּעַף
And Ishbi-benob,וְיִשְׁבִּי בְּנֹבwhoאֲשֶׁרwas one of the descendantsבִּילִידֵיof Raphaהָרָפָה—the weightוּמִשְׁקַלof his spearקֵינוֹwas threeשְׁלֹשׁhundredמֵאוֹתshekels in weightמִשְׁקַלof bronze,נְחֹשֶׁתand heוְהוּאwas girdedחָגוּרwith a new sword—חֲדָשָׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרthat he would strikeלְהַכּוֹתDavid.דָּוִד
But Abishaiוַ אֲבִישַׁיsonבֶּןof Zeruiahצְרוּיָהhelpedיַּעֲזָרhim,לוֹand he struckוַיַּךְthe Philistineהַפְּלִשְׁתִּיand put him to death.וַיְמִיתֵהוּThenאָזDavid’sדָוִדmenאַנְשֵׁיsworeנִשְׁבְּעוּto him,לוֹsaying,לֵאמֹר“You shall notלֹאgo outתֵצֵאwith usאִתָּנוּto battleלַמִּלְחָמָהagain,עוֹדso that you do notוְלֹאquenchתְכַבֶּהthe lampנֵרof Israel.”יִשְׂרָאֵל

There wasוַתְּהִיagainעוֹדwarהַמִּלְחָמָהat Gobבְּגוֹבwithעִםthe Philistines,פְּלִשְׁתִּיםand Elhananוַ אֶלְחָנָןsonבֶּןof Jaare-oregim,יַעְרֵי אֹרְגִיםthe Bethlehemite,בֵּית הַלַּחְמִיstruckיַּךְGoliathגָּלְיָתthe Gittite;הַגִּתִּיand the shaftוְעֵץof his spearחֲנִיתוֹwas like a beamכִּמְנוֹרof weavers.אֹרְגִים
There wasוַתְּהִיagainעוֹדwarמִלְחָמָהat Gath,בְּגַתand there wasוַיְהִיa manאִישׁof great stature,מָדוֹןand the fingersוְאֶצְבְּעֹתof his handsיָדָיוand the toesוְאֶצְבְּעֹתof his feetרַגְלָיוwere sixשֵׁשׁand six,וָשֵׁשׁtwenty-fourעֶשְׂרִים וְאַרְבַּעin number;מִסְפָּרand heוְ הוּאtooגַםhad been bornיֻלַּדto Rapha.לְהָרָפָה
He tauntedוַיְחָרֵףIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלand Jonathanיְהוֹנָתָןsonבֶּןof Shimeah,שִׁמְעָהDavid’sדָוִדbrother,אֲחִיstruck him.וַיַּכֵּהוּ
