YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלMoses,מֹשֶׁה“GoבֹּאtoאֶלPharaohפַּרְעֹהand sayוְאָמַרְתָּto him,אֵלָיו‘ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH:יְהוָה“Letשַׁלַּחmy peopleאֶת עַמִּיgo,שַׁלַּחthat they may serve me.וְיַעַבְדֻנִי
But ifוְאִםyouאַתָּהrefuseמָאֵןto let them go,לְשַׁלֵּחַlook,הִנֵּהIאָנֹכִיam going to plagueנֹגֵףallאֶת כָּלyour territoryגְּבוּלְךָwith frogs.בַּצְפַרְדְּעִים
The Nileהַיְאֹרwill swarmוְשָׁרַץwith frogs,צְפַרְדְּעִיםand they will come upוְעָלוּand goוּבָאוּinto your house,בְּבֵיתֶךָinto the roomוּבַחֲדַרwhere you sleep,מִשְׁכָּבְךָand ontoוְעַלyour bed,מִטָּתֶךָinto the housesוּבְבֵיתof your servantsעֲבָדֶיךָand among your people,וּבְעַמֶּךָinto your ovensוּבְתַנּוּרֶיךָand into your kneading bowls.וּבְמִשְׁאֲרוֹתֶיךָ
The frogsהַצְפַרְדְּעִיםwill come upיַעֲלוּon you,וּבְכָהon your people,וּבְעַמְּךָand on allוּבְכָלyour servants.”’”עֲבָדֶיךָ
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלMoses,מֹשֶׁה“SayאֱמֹרtoאֶלAaron,אַהֲרֹן‘Stretch outנְטֵהyour handאֶת יָדְךָwith your staffבְּמַטֶּךָoverעַלthe rivers,הַנְּהָרֹתoverעַלthe canals,הַיְאֹרִיםand overוְעַלthe pools,הָאֲגַמִּיםand bring upוְהַעַלthe frogsאֶת הַצְפַרְדְּעִיםonעַלthe landאֶרֶץof Egypt.’”מִצְרָיִם
So Aaronוַ אַהֲרֹןstretched outיֵּטhis handאֶת יָדוֹoverעַלthe watersמֵימֵיof Egypt,מִצְרָיִםand the frogsהַצְּפַרְדֵּעַcame upוַתַּעַלand coveredוַתְּכַסthe landאֶת אֶרֶץof Egypt.מִצְרָיִם
But the magiciansהַחֲרְטֻמִּיםdidוַיַּעֲשׂוּthe sameכֵןby their secret artsבְּלָטֵיהֶםand brought upוַיַּעֲלוּfrogsאֶת הַצְפַרְדְּעִיםonעַלthe landאֶרֶץof Egypt.מִצְרָיִם
Then Pharaohוַ פַרְעֹהcalledיִּקְרָאMosesלְמֹשֶׁהand Aaronוּלְאַהֲרֹןand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“PrayהַעְתִּירוּtoאֶלYHWHיְהוָהthat he removeוְיָסֵרthe frogsהַצְפַרְדְּעִיםfrom meמִמֶּנִּיand from my people,וּמֵעַמִּיand I will letוַאֲשַׁלְּחָהthe peopleאֶת הָעָםgo,אֲשַׁלְּחָהthat they may sacrificeוְיִזְבְּחוּto YHWH.”לַיהוָה
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto Pharaoh,לְפַרְעֹה“Have the honorהִתְפָּאֵרover me:עָלַיfor whenלְמָתַיshall I prayאַעְתִּירfor youלְךָand for your servantsוְלַעֲבָדֶיךָand for your people,וּלְעַמְּךָthat the frogsהַצֲפַרְדְּעִיםbe cut offלְהַכְרִיתfrom youמִמְּךָand from your housesוּמִבָּתֶּיךָand remainתִּשָּׁאַרְנָהonlyרַקin the Nile?”בַּיְאֹר
He said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Tomorrow.”לְמָחָרAnd he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“As you say,כִּדְבָרְךָso thatלְמַעַןyou may knowתֵּדַעthatכִּיthere is no oneאֵיןlike YHWHכַּיהוָהour Elohim.אֱלֹהֵינוּ
The frogsהַצְפַרְדְּעִיםwill departוְסָרוּfrom youמִמְּךָand from your housesוּמִבָּתֶּיךָand from your servantsוּמֵעֲבָדֶיךָand from your people;וּמֵעַמֶּךָthey will remainתִּשָּׁאַרְנָהonlyרַקin the Nile.”בַּיְאֹר
Then Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהand Aaronוְאַהֲרֹןwent outיֵּצֵאfromמֵעִםPharaoh,פַּרְעֹהand Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהcried outיִּצְעַקtoאֶלYHWHיְהוָהconcerningעַל דְּבַרthe frogsהַצְפַרְדְּעִיםthatאֲשֶׁרhe had broughtשָׂםon Pharaoh.לְפַרְעֹה
YHWHיְהוָהdidוַיַּעַשׂaccording to the wordכִּדְבַרof Moses,מֹשֶׁהand the frogsוַ הַצְפַרְדְּעִיםdiedיָּמֻתוּout ofמִןthe houses,הַבָּתִּיםout ofמִןthe courtyards,הַחֲצֵרֹתand out ofוּמִןthe fields.הַשָּׂדֹת
They piled them upוַיִּצְבְּרוּ אֹתָםin heaps,חֳמָרִםheaps,חֳמָרִםand the landוַ הָאָרֶץstank.תִּבְאַשׁ
But when Pharaohוַ פַּרְעֹהsawיַּרְאthatכִּיthere wasהָיְתָהrelief,הָרְוָחָהhe madeוְהַכְבֵּדhis heartאֶת לִבּוֹinsensitiveהַכְבֵּדand did notוְלֹאlistenשָׁמַעto them,אֲלֵהֶםasכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad said.דִּבֶּר
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלMoses,מֹשֶׁה“SayאֱמֹרtoאֶלAaron,אַהֲרֹן‘Stretch outנְטֵהyour staffאֶת מַטְּךָand strikeוְהַךְthe dustאֶת עֲפַרof the earth,הָאָרֶץthat it may becomeוְהָיָהgnatsלְכִנִּםthroughoutבְּallכָלthe landאֶרֶץof Egypt.’”מִצְרָיִם
They didוַיַּעֲשׂוּso;כֵןAaronוַ אַהֲרֹןstretched outיֵּטhis handאֶת יָדוֹwith his staffבְמַטֵּהוּand struckוַיַּךְthe dustאֶת עֲפַרof the earth,הָאָרֶץand there wereוַתְּהִיgnatsהַכִּנָּםon peopleבָּאָדָםand on animals;וּבַבְּהֵמָהallכָּלthe dustעֲפַרof the earthהָאָרֶץbecameהָיָהgnatsכִנִּיםthroughoutבְּallכָלthe landאֶרֶץof Egypt.מִצְרָיִם
The magiciansהַחַרְטֻמִּיםdidוַיַּעֲשׂוּthe sameכֵןby their secret artsבְּלָטֵיהֶםto bring forthלְהוֹצִיאgnats,אֶת הַכִּנִּיםbut they could not.וְלֹא יָכֹלוּAnd there wereוַתְּהִיgnatsהַכִּנָּםon peopleבָּאָדָםand on animals.וּבַבְּהֵמָה
Then the magiciansוַ הַחַרְטֻמִּיםsaidיֹּאמְרוּtoאֶלPharaoh,פַּרְעֹה“Thisהִואis the fingerאֶצְבַּעof Elohim.”אֱלֹהִיםBut the heartוַ לֵבof Pharaohפַּרְעֹהbecame obstinate,יֶּחֱזַקand he did notוְלֹאlistenשָׁמַעto them,אֲלֵהֶםasכַּאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהhad said.דִּבֶּר
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלMoses,מֹשֶׁה“Rise earlyהַשְׁכֵּםin the morningבַּבֹּקֶרand station yourselfוְהִתְיַצֵּבbeforeלִפְנֵיPharaoh;פַרְעֹהlook,הִנֵּהhe is going outיוֹצֵאto the water.הַמָּיְמָהAnd sayוְאָמַרְתָּto him,אֵלָיו‘ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH:יְהוָה“Letשַׁלַּחmy peopleעַמִּיgo,שַׁלַּחthat they may serve me.וְיַעַבְדֻנִי
Forכִּיifאִםyou do notאֵינְךָletמְשַׁלֵּחַmy peopleאֶת עַמִּיgo,מְשַׁלֵּחַlook,הִנְנִיI am going to sendמַשְׁלִיחַon you,בְּךָon your servants,וּבַעֲבָדֶיךָon your people,וּבְעַמְּךָand into your housesוּבְבָתֶּיךָthe swarms of flies;אֶת הֶעָרֹבand the housesוּ בָּתֵּיof the Egyptiansמִצְרַיִםwill be filledמָלְאוּwith the swarms of flies,אֶת הֶעָרֹבand alsoוְגַםthe groundהָאֲדָמָהon whichאֲשֶׁר עָלֶיהָthey stand.הֵם
But on thatוְ בַ הַהוּאdayיּוֹםI will set apartהִפְלֵיתִיthe landאֶת אֶרֶץof Goshen,גֹּשֶׁןwhereאֲשֶׁר עָלֶיהָmy peopleעַמִּיlive,עֹמֵדso thatלְthere will be noבִלְתִּי הֱיוֹתswarms of fliesעָרֹבthere,שָׁםthatלְמַעַןyou may knowתֵּדַעthatכִּיIאֲנִיam YHWHיְהוָהin the midstבְּקֶרֶבof the land.הָאָרֶץ
I will putוְשַׂמְתִּיa ransomפְדֻתbetweenבֵּיןmy peopleעַמִּיandוּבֵיןyour people.עַמֶּךָTomorrowלְמָחָרthisהַזֶּהsignהָאֹתwill take place.”’”יִהְיֶה
YHWHיְהוָהdidוַיַּעַשׂso;כֵּןheavyכָּבֵדswarms of fliesעָרֹבcameוַיָּבֹאinto the houseבֵּיתָהof Pharaohפַרְעֹהand the houseוּבֵיתof his servants,עֲבָדָיוand in allוּבְכָלthe landאֶרֶץof Egyptמִצְרַיִםthe landהָאָרֶץwas ruinedתִּשָּׁחֵתbecause ofמִפְּנֵיthe swarms of flies.הֶעָרֹב
Then Pharaohוַ פַרְעֹהcalledיִּקְרָאtoאֶלMosesמֹשֶׁהand to Aaronוּלְאַהֲרֹןand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Go,לְכוּsacrificeזִבְחוּto your Elohimלֵאלֹהֵיכֶםin the land.”בָּאָרֶץ
But Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהsaid,יֹּאמֶר“It is notלֹאrightנָכוֹןto doלַעֲשׂוֹתso,כֵּןforכִּיwhat we sacrificeנִזְבַּחto YHWHלַיהוָהour Elohimאֱלֹהֵינוּis an abominationתּוֹעֲבַתto the Egyptians.מִצְרַיִםIfהֵןwe sacrificeנִזְבַּחwhat is an abominationאֶת תּוֹעֲבַתto the Egyptiansמִצְרַיִםbefore their eyes,לְעֵינֵיהֶםwill they notוְלֹאstone us?יִסְקְלֻנוּ
We will goנֵלֵךְa journeyדֶּרֶךְof threeשְׁלֹשֶׁתdaysיָמִיםinto the wildernessבַּמִּדְבָּרand sacrificeוְזָבַחְנוּto YHWHלַיהוָהour Elohimאֱלֹהֵינוּasכַּאֲשֶׁרhe tellsיֹאמַרus.”אֵלֵינוּ
Pharaohפַּרְעֹהsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Iאָנֹכִיwill letאֲשַׁלַּחyouאֶתְכֶםgo,אֲשַׁלַּחthat you may sacrificeוּזְבַחְתֶּםto YHWHלַיהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֵיכֶםin the wilderness;בַּמִּדְבָּרonlyרַקyou must notלֹאgo very far away.הַרְחֵק תַרְחִיקוּ לָלֶכֶתPrayהַעְתִּירוּfor me.”בַּעֲדִי
Mosesמֹשֶׁהsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Look,הִנֵּהIאָנֹכִיam going outיוֹצֵאfrom you,מֵעִמָּךְand I will prayוְהַעְתַּרְתִּיtoאֶלYHWH,יְהוָהand the swarms of fliesהֶעָרֹבwill departוְסָרfrom Pharaoh,מִפַּרְעֹהfrom his servants,מֵעֲבָדָיוand from his peopleוּמֵעַמּוֹtomorrow.מָחָרOnlyרַקlet Pharaohפַּרְעֹהnotאַלagainיֹסֵףdeal deceitfullyהָתֵלby notלְבִלְתִּיlettingשַׁלַּחthe peopleאֶת הָעָםgoשַׁלַּחto sacrificeלִזְבֹּחַto YHWH.”לַיהוָה
So Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהwent outיֵּצֵאfromמֵעִםPharaohפַּרְעֹהand prayedוַיֶּעְתַּרtoאֶלYHWH.יְהוָה
YHWHיְהוָהdidוַיַּעַשׂaccording to the wordכִּדְבַרof Moses,מֹשֶׁהand he removedוַיָּסַרthe swarms of fliesהֶעָרֹבfrom Pharaoh,מִפַּרְעֹהfrom his servants,מֵעֲבָדָיוand from his people;וּמֵעַמּוֹnotלֹאoneאֶחָדremained.נִשְׁאַר
But Pharaohוַ פַּרְעֹהmadeיַּכְבֵּדhis heartאֶת לִבּוֹinsensitiveיַּכְבֵּדthisהַזֹּאתtimeבַּפַּעַםalso,גַּםand he did notוְלֹאletשִׁלַּחthe peopleאֶת הָעָםgo.שִׁלַּח
