And the wordוַ דְבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcameיְהִיto me,אֵלַיsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Sonבֶּןof man,אָדָםpropoundחוּדa riddleחִידָהand speakוּמְשֹׁלa proverbמָשָׁלto the houseאֶל בֵּיתof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵל
and say,וְאָמַרְתָּ‘ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִהThe greatהַגָּדוֹלeagle,הַנֶּשֶׁרgreatגְּדוֹלof wings,הַכְּנָפַיִםlongאֶרֶךְof pinion,הָאֵבֶרfullמָלֵאof feathers,הַנּוֹצָהwhichאֲשֶׁרhadלוֹcolors,הָרִקְמָהcameבָּאto Lebanonאֶל הַלְּבָנוֹןand tookוַיִּקַּחthe topאֶת צַמֶּרֶתof the cedar.הָאָרֶז
The tipאֵת רֹאשׁof its shootsיְנִיקוֹתָיוit plucked offקָטָףand brought itוַיְבִיאֵהוּto a landאֶל אֶרֶץof Canaan;כְּנַעַןin a cityבְּעִירof merchantsרֹכְלִיםit set it.שָׂמוֹ
And it tookוַיִּקַּחsome of the seedמִזֶּרַעof the landהָאָרֶץand put itוַיִּתְּנֵהוּin a fieldבִּשְׂדֵהfor sowing;זָרַעit took itקָחbesideעַלmanyרַבִּיםwaters,מַיִםlike a willowצַפְצָפָהit set it.שָׂמוֹ
And it sproutedוַיִּצְמַחand becameוַיְהִיa spreadingלְ סֹרַחַתvine,גֶפֶןlowשִׁפְלַתin stature,קוֹמָהso that its branchesלִ דָּלִיּוֹתָיוturnedפְנוֹתtoward it,אֵלָיוand its rootsוְשָׁרָשָׁיוwereיִהְיוּunder it;תַּחְתָּיוand it becameוַתְּהִיa vine,לְגֶפֶןand producedוַתַּעַשׂshootsבַּדִּיםand sent outוַתְּשַׁלַּחfoliage.פֹּארוֹת
And there wasוַיְהִיanotherאֶחָדgreatגָּדוֹלeagle,נֶשֶׁרgreatגְּדוֹלof wingsכְּנָפַיִםand fullוְרַבof feathers;נוֹצָהand look,וְהִנֵּהthisהַזֹּאתvineהַגֶּפֶןbentכָּפְנָהits rootsשָׁרֳשֶׁיהָtoward it,עָלָיוand sent outוְ שִׁלְחָהits branchesדָלִיּוֹתָיוtoward it,לּוֹso that it might waterלְהַשְׁקוֹתit,אוֹתָהּfrom the bedsמֵעֲרֻגוֹתof its planting.מַטָּעָהּ
In a goodטּוֹבfield,אֶל שָׂדֶהbesideאֶלmanyרַבִּיםwaters,מַיִםitהִיאwas planted,שְׁתוּלָהto produceלַעֲשׂוֹתbranchesעָנָףand to bearוְלָשֵׂאתfruit,פֶּרִיto becomeלִהְיוֹתa gloriousאַדָּרֶתvine.’לְגֶפֶן
Say,אֱמֹר‘ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהֹוִהWill it prosper?תִּצְלָחWill he notהֲלוֹאtear outיְנַתֵּקits rootsאֶת שָׁרָשֶׁיהָand strip offוְ יְקוֹסֵסits fruit,אֶת פִּרְיָהּso that it withers?וְיָבֵשׁAllכָּלthe leavesטַרְפֵּיof its sproutingצִמְחָהּwill wither;תִּיבָשׁand notוְלֹאwith a greatבִ גְּדוֹלָהarmזְרֹעַnor with manyוּבְ רָבpeopleעַםwill it take to pullלְמַשְׂאוֹתitאוֹתָהּup from its roots.מִשָּׁרָשֶׁיהָ
And look,וְהִנֵּהit is planted;שְׁתוּלָהwill it prosper?הֲתִצְלָחWill it notהֲלוֹאwitherתִּיבַשׁcompletelyיָבֹשׁwhenכְthe eastהַקָּדִיםwindרוּחַtouchesגַעַתit?בָּהּOn the bedsעַל עֲרֻגֹתof its sproutingצִמְחָהּit will wither.’”תִּיבָשׁ
And the wordוַ דְבַרof YHWHיְהוָהcameיְהִיto me,אֵלַיsaying,לֵאמֹר
“Sayאֱמָרnowנָאto the rebelliousהַמֶּרִיhouse,לְבֵית‘Do you notהֲלֹאknowיְדַעְתֶּםwhatמָהthese things mean?’אֵלֶּהSay,אֱמֹר‘Look,הִנֵּהthe kingמֶלֶךְof Babylonבָּבֶלcameבָאto Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםand tookוַיִּקַּחits kingאֶת מַלְכָּהּand its princes,וְאֶת שָׂרֶיהָand broughtוַיָּבֵאthemאוֹתָםto himselfאֵלָיוin Babylon.בָּבֶלָה
And he tookוַיִּקַּחone of the royalמִ הַמְּלוּכָהoffspringזֶּרַעand madeוַיִּכְרֹתa covenantבְּרִיתwith him,אִתּוֹand broughtוַיָּבֵאhimאֹתוֹinto an imprecation;בְּאָלָהand the mightyוְאֶת אֵילֵיof the landהָאָרֶץhe took away,לָקָח
that it might beלִהְיוֹתa lowlyשְׁפָלָהkingdom,מַמְלָכָהnotלְבִלְתִּיlifting itself up,הִתְנַשֵּׂאthat by keepingלִשְׁמֹרhis covenantאֶת בְּרִיתוֹit might stand.לְעָמְדָהּ
But he rebelledוַיִּמְרָדagainst himבּוֹby sendingלִשְׁלֹחַhis messengersמַלְאָכָיוto Egypt,מִצְרַיִםthat they might giveלָתֶתhimלוֹhorsesסוּסִיםand manyוְ רָבpeople.עַםWill he prosper?הֲיִצְלָחWill he escape,הֲיִמָּלֵטthe one who doesהָעֹשֵׂהthese things?אֵלֶּהCan he breakוְהֵפֵרa covenantבְּרִיתand escape?וְנִמְלָט
As I live,חַי אָנִיdeclaresנְאֻםAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH,יְהוִהsurelyאִם לֹאin the placeבִּמְקוֹםof the kingהַמֶּלֶךְwhoהַmadeמַּמְלִיךְhimאֹתוֹking,מַּמְלִיךְwhoseאֲשֶׁרimprecationאֶת אָלָתוֹhe despisedבָּזָהand whoseוַאֲשֶׁרcovenantאֶת בְּרִיתוֹhe broke,הֵפֵרwith himאִתּוֹin the midstבְתוֹךְof Babylonבָּבֶלhe will die.יָמוּת
And Pharaohפַרְעֹהwill notוְלֹאwith a greatבְ גָּדוֹלarmyחַיִלand with a largeוּבְ רָבassemblyקָהָלactיַעֲשֶׂהfor himאוֹתוֹin the war,בַּמִּלְחָמָהwhen siege ramps are cast upבִּשְׁפֹּךְ סֹלְלָהand siege walls are builtוּבִבְנוֹת דָּיֵקto cut offלְהַכְרִיתmanyרַבּוֹתlives.נְפָשׁוֹת
And he despisedוּבָזָהthe imprecationאָלָהby breakingלְהָפֵרthe covenant;בְּרִיתand look,וְהִנֵּהhe had givenנָתַןhis hand,יָדוֹand has doneוְ עָשָׂהallכָלthese things;אֵלֶּהhe will notלֹאescape.’יִמָּלֵט
ThereforeלָכֵןthusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִה‘As I live,חַי אָנִיsurelyאִם לֹאmy imprecationאָלָתִיthatאֲשֶׁרhe despisedבָּזָהand my covenantוּבְרִיתִיthatאֲשֶׁרhe broke,הֵפִירI will put itוּנְתַתִּיוon his head.בְּרֹאשׁוֹ
And I will spreadוּפָרַשְׂתִּיmy netרִשְׁתִּיover him,עָלָיוand he will be caughtוְנִתְפַּשׂin my snare;בִּמְצוּדָתִיand I will bring himוַהֲבִיאוֹתִיהוּto Babylonבָבֶלָהand enter into judgmentוְנִשְׁפַּטְתִּיwith himאִתּוֹthereשָׁםfor his breach of faithמַעֲלוֹthatאֲשֶׁרhe committedמָעַלagainst me.בִּי
And allוְאֵת כָּלhis fugitives,מִבְרָחָיוwith allבְּכָלhis troops,אֲגַפָּיוby the swordבַּחֶרֶבwill fall,יִפֹּלוּand those who remainוְהַנִּשְׁאָרִיםto everyלְכָלwindרוּחַwill be scattered;יִפָּרֵשׂוּand you will knowוִידַעְתֶּםthatכִּיI,אֲנִיYHWH,יְהוָהhave spoken.’דִּבַּרְתִּי
ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרAdonaiאֲדֹנָיYHWH:יְהוִה‘And I myselfוְ אָנִיwill takeלָקַחְתִּיfrom the topמִצַּמֶּרֶתof the loftyהָרָמָהcedarהָאֶרֶזand set it;וְנָתָתִּיfrom the tipמֵרֹאשׁof its shootsיֹנְקוֹתָיוa tender oneרַךְI will pluck off,אֶקְטֹףand I myselfוְ אָנִיwill plant itשָׁתַלְתִּיon a mountainעַל הַרhighגָּבֹהַand steep.וְתָלוּל
On the mountainבְּהַרheightמְרוֹםof IsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלI will plant it,אֶשְׁתֳּלֶנּוּand it will bearוְנָשָׂאbranchesעָנָףand produceוְעָשָׂהfruit,פֶרִיand becomeוְהָיָהa nobleאַדִּירcedar;לְאֶרֶזand under itוְ תַחְתָּיוwill dwellשָׁכְנוּeveryכֹּלbirdצִפּוֹרof everyכָּלwing;כָּנָףin the shadeבְּצֵלof its branchesדָּלִיּוֹתָיוthey will dwell.תִּשְׁכֹּנָּה
And allוְ כָּלthe treesעֲצֵיof the fieldהַשָּׂדֶהwill knowיָדְעוּthatכִּיI,אֲנִיYHWH,יְהוָהhave brought lowהִשְׁפַּלְתִּיthe highגָּבֹהַtree,עֵץhave made highהִגְבַּהְתִּיthe lowשָׁפָלtree,עֵץhave dried upהוֹבַשְׁתִּיthe greenלָחtree,עֵץand have made flourishוְהִפְרַחְתִּיthe dryיָבֵשׁtree.עֵץI,אֲנִיYHWH,יְהוָהhave spoken,דִּבַּרְתִּיand I will do it.’”וְעָשִׂיתִי
