And whileוּכְEzraעֶזְרָאwas prayingהִתְפַּלֵּלand making confession,וּכְהִתְוַדֹּתוֹweepingבֹּכֶהand lying prostrateוּמִתְנַפֵּלbeforeלִפְנֵיthe houseבֵּיתof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםa veryמְאֹדgreatרַבassemblyקָהָלfrom Israelמִיִּשְׂרָאֵלgatheredנִקְבְּצוּto him,אֵלָיוmenאֲנָשִׁיםand womenוְנָשִׁיםand children,וִילָדִיםforכִּיthe peopleהָעָםweptבָכוּwith muchהַרְבֵּהweeping.בֶכֶה
ThenוַShecaniahשְׁכַנְיָהthe sonבֶןof Jehiel,יְחִיאֵלof the sonsמִבְּנֵיof Elam,עֵילָםansweredיַּעַןand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto Ezra,לְעֶזְרָא“Weאֲנַחְנוּhave been unfaithfulמָעַלְנוּto our Elohimבֵאלֹהֵינוּand have marriedוַנֹּשֶׁבforeignנָכְרִיּוֹתwomenנָשִׁיםfrom the peoplesמֵעַמֵּיof the land;הָאָרֶץbut nowוְעַתָּהthere isיֵשׁhopeמִקְוֶהfor Israelלְיִשְׂרָאֵלconcerningעַלthis.זֹאת
So nowוְעַתָּהlet us makeנִכְרָתa covenantבְּרִיתwith our Elohimלֵאלֹהֵינוּto send outלְהוֹצִיאallכָלthe wivesנָשִׁיםand those bornוְהַנּוֹלָדof them,מֵהֶםaccording to the counselבַּעֲצַתof my lordאֲדֹנָיand of those who trembleוְהַחֲרֵדִיםat the commandmentבְּמִצְוַתof our Elohim;אֱלֹהֵינוּand let it be doneוְ יֵעָשֶׂהaccording to the law.כַתּוֹרָה
Arise,קוּםforכִּיthe matterהַדָּבָרis upon you,עָלֶיךָand weוַאֲנַחְנוּare with you;עִמָּךְbe strongחֲזַקand do it.”וַעֲשֵׂה
AndוַEzraעֶזְרָאaroseיָּקָםand put under oathוַיַּשְׁבַּעthe officialsשָׂרֵיof the priests,הַכֹּהֲנִיםthe Levites,הַלְוִיִּםand allוְכָלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלto doלַעֲשׂוֹתaccording to thisכַּ הַזֶּהword;דָּבָרand they swore.וַיִּשָּׁבֵעוּ
AndוַEzraעֶזְרָאroseיָּקָםfrom beforeמִלִּפְנֵיthe houseבֵּיתof Elohimהָאֱלֹהִיםand wentוַיֵּלֶךְtoאֶלthe chamberלִשְׁכַּתof Jehohananיְהוֹחָנָןthe sonבֶּןof Eliashib;אֶלְיָשִׁיבand he wentוַיֵּלֶךְthere;שָׁםbreadלֶחֶםhe did notלֹאeat,אָכַלand waterוּמַיִםhe did notלֹאdrink,שָׁתָהforכִּיhe was mourningמִתְאַבֵּלoverעַלthe unfaithfulnessמַעַלof the exiles.הַגּוֹלָה
Andוַthey made a proclamation passיַּעֲבִירוּ קוֹלthroughout Judahבִּיהוּדָהand Jerusalemוִירוּשָׁלִַםto allלְכֹלthe sonsבְּנֵיof the exileהַגּוֹלָהto gatherלְהִקָּבֵץat Jerusalem,יְרוּשָׁלִָם
and that everyoneוְכֹלwhoאֲשֶׁרdid notלֹאcomeיָבוֹאwithin threeלִשְׁלֹשֶׁתdays,הַיָּמִיםaccording to the counselכַּעֲצַתof the officialsהַשָּׂרִיםand the elders,וְהַזְּקֵנִיםallכָּלhis goodsרְכוּשׁוֹwould be devoted to destruction,יָחֳרַםand he himselfוְהוּאwould be separatedיִבָּדֵלfrom the assemblyמִקְּהַלof the exiles.הַגּוֹלָה
And allוַ כָלthe menאַנְשֵׁיof Judahיְהוּדָהand Benjaminוּבִנְיָמִןgatheredיִּקָּבְצוּat Jerusalemיְרוּשָׁלִַםwithin threeלִשְׁלֹשֶׁתdays;הַיָּמִיםitהוּאwas the ninthהַתְּשִׁיעִיmonth,חֹדֶשׁon the twentiethבְּעֶשְׂרִיםof the month.בַּחֹדֶשׁAnd allוַ כָלthe peopleהָעָםsatיֵּשְׁבוּin the squareבִּרְחוֹבof the houseבֵּיתof Elohim,הָאֱלֹהִיםtremblingמַרְעִידִיםbecause ofעַלthe matterהַדָּבָרand because ofוּמֵthe rains.הַגְּשָׁמִים
AndוַEzraעֶזְרָאthe priestהַכֹּהֵןstood upיָּקָםand saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵהֶם“Youאַתֶּםhave been unfaithfulמְעַלְתֶּםand have marriedוַתֹּשִׁיבוּforeignנָכְרִיּוֹתwomen,נָשִׁיםaddingלְהוֹסִיףtoעַלthe guiltאַשְׁמַתof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
So now,וְעַתָּהgiveתְּנוּacknowledgmentתוֹדָהto YHWH,לַיהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof your fathers,אֲבֹתֵיכֶםand doוַעֲשׂוּhis will,רְצוֹנוֹand separate yourselvesוְהִבָּדְלוּfrom the peoplesמֵעַמֵּיof the landהָאָרֶץand fromוּמִןthe foreignהַנָּכְרִיּוֹתwomen.”הַנָּשִׁים
And allוַ כָלthe assemblyהַקָּהָלansweredיַּעְנוּand saidוַיֹּאמְרוּwith a loudגָּדוֹלvoice,קוֹל“That is right:כֵּןaccording to your wordכִּדְבָרְךָit is oursעָלֵינוּto do.לַעֲשׂוֹת
Butאֲבָלthe peopleהָעָםare many,רָבandוְit is the timeהָעֵתof rains,גְּשָׁמִיםand there is noוְאֵיןstrengthכֹּחַto standלַעֲמוֹדoutside;בַּחוּץand the workוְהַמְּלָאכָהis notלֹאfor oneלְ אֶחָדdayיוֹםnorוְלֹאfor two,לִשְׁנַיִםforכִּיwe have greatlyהִרְבִּינוּtransgressedלִפְשֹׁעַin thisבַּ הַזֶּהmatter.דָּבָר
Please,נָאlet our officialsשָׂרֵינוּstandיַעֲמְדוּfor allלְכָלthe assembly,הַקָּהָלand let allוְכֹלwhoאֲשֶׁרin our citiesבֶּעָרֵינוּhave marriedהַהֹשִׁיבforeignנָכְרִיּוֹתwomenנָשִׁיםcomeיָבֹאat appointedמְזֻמָּנִיםtimes,לְעִתִּיםand with themוְעִמָּהֶםthe eldersזִקְנֵיof each cityעִיר וָעִירand its judges,וְשֹׁפְטֶיהָuntilעַד לְthe burningחֲרוֹןangerאַףof our Elohimאֱלֹהֵינוּis turned awayהָשִׁיבfrom usמִמֶּנּוּoverעַד לַthisהַזֶּהmatter.”דָּבָר
OnlyאַךְJonathanיוֹנָתָןthe sonבֶּןof Asahelעֲשָׂהאֵלand Jahzeiahוְיַחְזְיָהthe sonבֶןof Tikvahתִּקְוָהstoodעָמְדוּagainstעַלthis,זֹאתand Meshullamוּמְשֻׁלָּםand Shabbethaiוְשַׁבְּתַיthe Leviteהַלֵּוִיhelped them.עֲזָרֻם
Andוַthe sonsבְּנֵיof the exileהַגּוֹלָהdidיַּעֲשׂוּso.כֵןAnd there were set apartוַיִּבָּדְלוּEzraעֶזְרָאthe priestהַכֹּהֵןand men,אֲנָשִׁיםheadsרָאשֵׁיof the fathers’ houses,הָאָבוֹתaccording to their fathers’ house,לְבֵית אֲבֹתָםand all of themוְכֻלָּםby name;בְּשֵׁמוֹתand they sat downוַיֵּשְׁבוּon the first dayבְּיוֹם אֶחָדof the tenthלַ הָעֲשִׂירִיmonthחֹדֶשׁto inquire intoלְדַרְיוֹשׁthe matter;הַדָּבָר
and they finishedוַיְכַלּוּwith allבַכֹּלthe menאֲנָשִׁיםwhoהַhad marriedהֹשִׁיבוּforeignנָכְרִיּוֹתwomenנָשִׁיםbyעַדthe firstאֶחָדdayיוֹםof the firstלַ הָרִאשׁוֹןmonth.חֹדֶשׁ
And there were foundוַיִּמָּצֵאamong the sonsמִבְּנֵיof the priestsהַכֹּהֲנִיםwhoאֲשֶׁרhad marriedהֹשִׁיבוּforeignנָכְרִיּוֹתwomen:נָשִׁיםof the sonsמִבְּנֵיof Jeshuaיֵשׁוּעַthe sonבֶּןof Jozadakיוֹצָדָקand his brothers:וְאֶחָיוMaaseiah,מַעֲשֵׂיָהEliezer,וֶאֱלִיעֶזֶרJarib,וְיָרִיבand Gedaliah.וּגְדַלְיָה
And they gaveוַיִּתְּנוּtheir handיָדָםto send outלְהוֹצִיאtheir wives,נְשֵׁיהֶםand, being guilty,וַאֲשֵׁמִיםthey offered a ramאֵילof the flockצֹאןfor their guilt.עַל אַשְׁמָתָם
And of the sonsוּמִבְּנֵיof Immer:אִמֵּרHananiחֲנָנִיand Zebadiah.וּזְבַדְיָה
And of the sonsוּמִבְּנֵיof Harim:חָרִםMaaseiah,מַעֲשֵׂיָהElijah,וְאֵלִיָּהShemaiah,וּשְׁמַעְיָהJehiel,וִיחִיאֵלand Uzziah.וְעֻזִיָּה
And of the sonsוּמִבְּנֵיof Pashhur:פַּשְׁחוּרElioenai,אֶלְיוֹעֵינַיMaaseiah,מַעֲשֵׂיָהIshmael,יִשְׁמָעֵאלNethanel,נְתַנְאֵלJozabad,יוֹזָבָדand Eleasah.וְאֶלְעָשָׂה
And ofוּמִןthe Levites:הַלְוִיִּםJozabad,יוֹזָבָדShimei,וְשִׁמְעִיKelaiahוְקֵלָיָה(he isהוּאKelita),קְלִיטָאPethahiah,פְּתַחְיָהJudah,יְהוּדָהand Eliezer.וֶאֱלִיעֶזֶר
And ofוּמִןthe singers:הַמְשֹׁרְרִיםEliashib.אֶלְיָשִׁיבAnd ofוּמִןthe gatekeepers:הַשֹּׁעֲרִיםShallum,שַׁלֻּםTelem,וָטֶלֶםand Uri.וְאוּרִי
And of Israel:וּמִיִּשְׂרָאֵלof the sonsמִבְּנֵיof Parosh:פַרְעֹשׁRamiah,רַמְיָהIzziah,וְיִזִּיָּהMalchijah,וּמַלְכִּיָּהMijamin,וּמִיָּמִןEleazar,וְאֶלְעָזָרMalchijah,וּמַלְכִּיָּהand Benaiah.וּבְנָיָה
And of the sonsוּמִבְּנֵיof Elam:עֵילָםMattaniah,מַתַּנְיָהZechariah,זְכַרְיָהJehiel,וִיחִיאֵלAbdi,וְעַבְדִּיJeremoth,וִירֵמוֹתand Elijah.וְאֵלִיָּה
And of the sonsוּמִבְּנֵיof Zattu:זַתּוּאElioenai,אֶלְיוֹעֵנַיEliashib,אֶלְיָשִׁיבMattaniah,מַתַּנְיָהJeremoth,וִירֵמוֹתZabad,וְזָבָדand Aziza.וַעֲזִיזָא
And of the sonsוּמִבְּנֵיof Bebai:בֵּבָיJehohanan,יְהוֹחָנָןHananiah,חֲנַנְיָהZabbai,זַבַּיAthlai.עַתְלָי
And of the sonsוּמִבְּנֵיof Bani:בָּנִיMeshullam,מְשֻׁלָּםMalluch,מַלּוּךְAdaiah,וַעֲדָיָהJashub,יָשׁוּבSheal,וּשְׁאָלand Ramoth.וְרָמוֹת
And of the sonsוּמִבְּנֵיof Pahath-moab:פַּחַת מוֹאָבAdna,עַדְנָאChelal,וּכְלָלBenaiah,בְּנָיָהMaaseiah,מַעֲשֵׂיָהMattaniah,מַתַּנְיָהBezalel,בְצַלְאֵלBinnui,וּבִנּוּיand Manasseh.וּמְנַשֶּׁה
And the sonsוּבְנֵיof Harim:חָרִםEliezer,אֱלִיעֶזֶרIsshijah,יִשִּׁיָּהMalchijah,מַלְכִּיָּהShemaiah,שְׁמַעְיָהSimeon,שִׁמְעוֹן
Benjamin,בְּנְיָמִןMalluch,מַלּוּךְShemariah.שְׁמַרְיָה
Of the sonsמִבְּנֵיof Hashum:חָשֻׁםMattenai,מַתְּנַיMattattah,מַתַּתָּהZabad,זָבָדEliphelet,אֱלִיפֶלֶטJeremai,יְרֵמַיManasseh,מְנַשֶּׁהShimei.שִׁמְעִי
Of the sonsמִבְּנֵיof Bani:בָנִיMaadai,מַעֲדַיAmram,עַמְרָםand Uel,וְאוּאֵל
Benaiah,בְּנָיָהBedeiah,בֵדְיָהCheluhi,כְּלוּהוּ
Vaniah,וַנְיָהMeremoth,מְרֵמוֹתEliashib,אֶלְיָשִׁיב
Mattaniah,מַתַּנְיָהMattenai,מַתְּנַיand Jaasai,וְיַעֲשָׂי
and Baniוּבָנִיand Binnui,וּבִנּוּיShimei,שִׁמְעִי
and Shelemiahוְשֶׁלֶמְיָהand Nathanוְנָתָןand Adaiah,וַעֲדָיָה
Machnadebai,מַכְנַדְבַיShashai,שָׁשַׁיSharai,שָׁרָי
Azarelעֲזַרְאֵלand Shelemiah,וְשֶׁלֶמְיָהוּShemariah,שְׁמַרְיָה
Shallum,שַׁלּוּםAmariah,אֲמַרְיָהJoseph.יוֹסֵף
Of the sonsמִבְּנֵיof Nebo:נְבוֹJeiel,יְעִיאֵלMattithiah,מַתִּתְיָהZabad,זָבָדZebina,זְבִינָאJaddaiיַדַּיand Joel,וְיוֹאֵלBenaiah.בְּנָיָה
Allכָּלtheseאֵלֶּהhad takenנָשְׂאוּforeignנָכְרִיּוֹתwives,נָשִׁיםand there wereוְיֵשׁamong themמֵהֶםwivesנָשִׁיםby whom they had hadוַיָּשִׂימוּchildren.בָּנִים
