Saying,לֵאמֹר“Look,הֵןif a manאִישׁsends awayיְשַׁלַּחhis wifeאֶת אִשְׁתּוֹand she goesוְהָלְכָהfrom himמֵאִתּוֹand becomesוְהָיְתָהanother man’s,לְאִישׁ אַחֵרwill he returnהֲיָשׁוּבto herאֵלֶיהָagain?עוֹדWould notהֲלוֹאthat landהָאָרֶץ הַהִיאbe utterly defiled?חָנוֹף תֶּחֱנַףBut youוְאַתְּhave prostituted yourselfזָנִיתwith many companions;רֵעִים רַבִּיםand would you returnוְשׁוֹבto me?אֵלַיdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH.יְהֹוָה
Lift upשְׂאִיyour eyesעֵינַיִךְto the bare heightsעַל שְׁפָיִםand see:וּרְאִיwhereאֵיפֹהhave you notלֹאbeen lain with?שֻׁכַּבְתְּBy the roadsעַל דְּרָכִיםyou satיָשַׁבְתְּfor themלָהֶםlike an Arabכַּעֲרָבִיin the wilderness,בַּמִּדְבָּרand you defiledוַתַּחֲנִיפִיthe landאֶרֶץwith your prostitutionsבִּזְנוּתַיִךְand with your evil.וּבְרָעָתֵךְ
And the showersרְבִבִיםhave been withheld,וַיִּמָּנְעוּand there has beenהָיָהnoלוֹאlate rain;וּמַלְקוֹשׁyet the foreheadוּמֵצַחof a prostituteזוֹנָהwomanאִשָּׁהyou have had;הָיָה לָךְyou refusedמֵאַנְתְּto be ashamed.הִכָּלֵם
Have you notהֲלוֹאjust nowמֵעַתָּהcalled to me,קָרָאת לִי‘My father,אָבִיyou areאָתָּהthe companionאַלּוּףof my youth!נְעֻרַי
Will he keep itהֲיִנְטֹרforever?לְעוֹלָםWill he retain itאִם יִשְׁמֹרto the end?’לָנֶצַחLook,הִנֵּהso you have spoken,דִבַּרְתְּbut you have doneוַתַּעֲשִׂיevil thingsהָרָעוֹתand have had your way.וַתּוּכָל
And YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto meאֵלַיin the daysבִּימֵיof KingהַמֶּלֶךְJosiah,יֹאשִׁיָּהוּ“Have you seenהֲרָאִיתָwhatאֲשֶׁרapostateמְשֻׁבָהIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלhas done?עָשְׂתָהShe wentהֹלְכָה הִיאup on everyעַל כָּלhighגָּבֹהַּmountainהַרand underוְאֶל תַּחַתeveryכָּלleafyרַעֲנָןtree,עֵץand prostituted herselfוַתִּזְנִיthere.שָׁם
And I said,וָאֹמַר‘Afterאַחֲרֵיshe has doneעֲשׂוֹתָהּallאֶת כָּלthese thingsאֵלֶּהshe will returnתָּשׁוּבto me’;אֵלַיbut she did notוְלֹאreturn.שָׁבָהAnd her treacherousבָּגוֹדָהsisterאֲחוֹתָהּJudahיְהוּדָהsaw it.וַתֵּרֶא
And I sawוָאֵרֶאthatכִּיfor allעַל כָּלthe reasonsאֹדוֹתthatאֲשֶׁרapostateמְשֻׁבָהIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלhad committed adultery,נִאֲפָהI had sent her awayשִׁלַּחְתִּיהָand given herוָאֶתֵּן אֵלֶיהָher certificateאֶת סֵפֶרof divorce;כְּרִיתֻתֶיהָyet treacherousבֹּגֵדָהJudah,יְהוּדָהher sister,אֲחוֹתָהּdid notוְלֹאfear,יָרְאָהbut she wentוַתֵּלֶךְand prostituted herselfוַתִּזֶןtoo,גַּםshe herself.הִיא
And it happenedוְהָיָהthat through the lightnessמִקֹּלof her prostitutionזְנוּתָהּshe defiledוַתֶּחֱנַףthe land,אֶת הָאָרֶץand she committed adulteryוַתִּנְאַףwith stoneאֶת הָאֶבֶןand with wood.וְאֶת הָעֵץ
And evenוְגַםin all thisבְּכָל זֹאתher treacherousבָּגוֹדָהsisterאֲחוֹתָהּJudahיְהוּדָהdid notלֹאreturnשָׁבָהto meאֵלַיwith allבְּכָלher heart,לִבָּהּbutכִּי אִםin falsehood,בְּשֶׁקֶרdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH.”יְהוָה
And YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto me,אֵלַי“ApostateמְשֻׁבָהIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלhas shown herselfנַפְשָׁהּrighteousצִדְּקָהmore than treacherousמִבֹּגֵדָהJudah.יְהוּדָה
Goהָלֹךְand proclaimוְקָרָאתָthese wordsאֶת הַדְּבָרִים הָאֵלֶּהtoward the north,צָפוֹנָהand say,וְאָמַרְתָּ‘Return,שׁוּבָהapostateמְשֻׁבָהIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH;יְהוָהI will notלוֹאmake my faceפָּנַיfallאַפִּילon you,בָּכֶםforכִּיIאֲנִיam faithful,חָסִידdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH;יְהוָהI will notלֹאkeep itאֶטּוֹרforever.לְעוֹלָם
Onlyאַךְknowדְּעִיyour iniquity,עֲוֺנֵךְthatכִּיagainst YHWHבַּיהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהַיִךְyou have transgressed,פָּשָׁעַתְּand have scatteredוַתְּפַזְּרִיyour waysאֶת דְּרָכַיִךְto strangersלַזָּרִיםunderתַּחַתeveryכָּלleafyרַעֲנָןtree,עֵץand my voiceוּבְקוֹלִיyou have notלֹאheeded,שְׁמַעְתֶּםdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH.יְהֹוָה
Return,שׁוּבוּwaywardשׁוֹבָבִיםchildren,בָנִיםdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH,יְהוָהforכִּיIאָנֹכִיam your husband,בָּעַלְתִּי בָכֶםand I will take you,וְלָקַחְתִּי אֶתְכֶםoneאֶחָדfrom a cityמֵעִירand twoוּשְׁנַיִםfrom a clan,מִמִּשְׁפָּחָהand I will bring youוְהֵבֵאתִי אֶתְכֶםto Zion.צִיּוֹן
And I will give youוְנָתַתִּי לָכֶםshepherdsרֹעִיםafter my own heart,כְּלִבִּיand they will shepherd youוְרָעוּ אֶתְכֶםwith knowledgeדֵּעָהand understanding.וְהַשְׂכֵּיל
And it will happen,וְהָיָהwhenכִּיyou multiplyתִרְבּוּand are fruitfulוּפְרִיתֶםin the landבָּאָרֶץin those days,בַּיָּמִים הָהֵמָּהdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH,יְהוָהthey will noלֹאlongerעוֹדsay,יֹאמְרוּ‘The arkאֲרוֹןof the covenantבְּרִיתof YHWH.’יְהוָהIt will notוְלֹאcome upיַעֲלֶהinto the heart,עַל לֵבand they will notוְלֹאrememberיִזְכְּרוּit,בוֹand they will notוְלֹאmiss it,יִפְקֹדוּand it will notוְלֹאbe madeיֵעָשֶׂהagain.עוֹד
At that timeבָּעֵת הַהִיאthey will callיִקְרְאוּJerusalemלִירוּשָׁלִַםthe Throneכִּסֵּאof YHWH,יְהוָהand allכָלthe nationsהַגּוֹיִםwill gatherוְנִקְוּוּto it,אֵלֶיהָto the nameלְשֵׁםof YHWHיְהוָהat Jerusalem,לִירוּשָׁלִָםand they will noוְלֹאlongerעוֹדwalkיֵלְכוּafterאַחֲרֵיthe stubbornnessשְׁרִרוּתof their evilהָרָעheart.לִבָּם
In those daysבַּיָּמִים הָהֵמָּהthe houseבֵיתof Judahיְהוּדָהwill walkיֵלְכוּwith the houseעַל בֵּיתof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand they will comeוְיָבֹאוּtogetherיַחְדָּוfrom the landמֵאֶרֶץof the northצָפוֹןto the landעַל הָאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרI gave as an inheritanceהִנְחַלְתִּי אֶתto your fathers.אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם
And Iוְאָנֹכִיsaid,אָמַרְתִּי‘HowאֵיךְI will set youאֲשִׁיתֵךְamong the childrenבַּבָּנִיםand give youוְאֶתֶּן לָךְa desirableחֶמְדָּהland,אֶרֶץan inheritanceנַחֲלַתof beauty,צְבִיthe most beautifulצִבְאוֹתof the nations!’גּוֹיִםAnd I said,וָאֹמַר‘You will call meתִּקְרְאִי לִיMy father,אָבִיand you will notלֹאturn awayתָשׁוּבִיfrom following me.’וּמֵאַחֲרַי
Surely,אָכֵןas a womanאִשָּׁהbetraysבָּגְדָהher companion,מֵרֵעָהּsoכֵּןyou have betrayedבְּגַדְתֶּםme,בִּיhouseבֵּיתof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלdeclaresנְאֻםYHWH.יְהוָה
A voiceקוֹלon the bare heightsעַל שְׁפָיִיםis heard,נִשְׁמָעthe weeping,בְּכִיthe pleadingתַחֲנוּנֵיof the childrenבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלforכִּיthey have pervertedהֶעֱוּוּtheir way,אֶת דַּרְכָּםthey have forgottenשָׁכְחוּYHWHאֶת יְהֹוָהtheir Elohim.אֱלֹהֵיהֶם
“Return,שׁוּבוּwaywardשׁוֹבָבִיםchildren;בָּנִיםI will healאֶרְפָּהyour apostasies.”מְשׁוּבֹתֵיכֶם“Look, weהִנְנוּcomeאָתָנוּto you,לָךְforכִּיyou areאַתָּהYHWHיְהֹוָהour Elohim.אֱלֹהֵינוּ
Surelyאָכֵןfor falsehoodלַשֶּׁקֶרare the hills,מִגְּבָעוֹתthe tumultהָמוֹןof the mountains;הָרִיםsurelyאָכֵןin YHWHבַּיהֹוָהour Elohimאֱלֹהֵינוּis the salvationתְּשׁוּעַתof Israel.יִשְׂרָאֵל
But the Shameוְהַבֹּשֶׁתhas devouredאָכְלָהthe laborאֶת יְגִיעַof our fathersאֲבוֹתֵינוּfrom our youth,מִנְּעוּרֵינוּtheir flocksאֶת צֹאנָםand their herds,וְאֶת בְּקָרָםtheir sonsאֶת בְּנֵיהֶםand their daughters.וְאֶת בְּנוֹתֵיהֶם
Let us lie downנִשְׁכְּבָהin our shame,בְּבָשְׁתֵּנוּand let our humiliationכְּלִמָּתֵנוּcover us,וּתְכַסֵּנוּforכִּיagainst YHWHלַיהוָהour Elohimאֱלֹהֵינוּwe have sinned,חָטָאנוּweאֲנַחְנוּand our fathers,וַאֲבוֹתֵינוּfrom our youthמִנְּעוּרֵינוּeven toוְעַדthis day,הַיּוֹם הַזֶּהand we have notוְלֹאheededשָׁמַעְנוּthe voiceבְּקוֹלof YHWHיְהֹוָהour Elohim.”אֱלֹהֵינוּ
