Then Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַsonבִּןof NunנוּןsentיִּשְׁלַחfromמִןShittimהַשִּׁטִּיםtwoשְׁנַיִםmenאֲנָשִׁיםas spiesמְרַגְּלִיםsecretly,חֶרֶשׁsaying,לֵאמֹר“Go,לְכוּseeרְאוּthe landאֶת הָאָרֶץandוְJericho.”אֶת יְרִיחוֹSo they wentוַיֵּלְכוּand cameוַיָּבֹאוּto the houseבֵּיתof a woman,אִשָּׁהa prostitute,זוֹנָהwhose name wasוּשְׁמָהּRahab,רָחָבand they lay downוַיִּשְׁכְּבוּthere.שָׁמָּה
And it was toldוַיֵּאָמַרthe kingלְמֶלֶךְof Jericho,יְרִיחוֹsaying,לֵאמֹר“Look,הִנֵּהmenאֲנָשִׁיםhave comeבָּאוּhereהֵנָּהtonightהַלַּיְלָהfrom the sonsמִבְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלto search outלַחְפֹּרthe land.”אֶת הָאָרֶץ
Then the kingוַ מֶלֶךְof JerichoיְרִיחוֹsentיִּשְׁלַחtoאֶלRahab,רָחָבsaying,לֵאמֹר“Bring outהוֹצִיאִיthe menהָאֲנָשִׁיםwho cameהַבָּאִיםto you,אֵלַיִךְwhoאֲשֶׁרenteredבָּאוּyour house,לְבֵיתֵךְforכִּיto search outלַחְפֹּרallאֶת כָּלthe landהָאָרֶץthey have come.”בָּאוּ
But the womanוַ הָאִשָּׁהtookתִּקַּחthe twoאֶת שְׁנֵיmenהָאֲנָשִׁיםand hid them.וַתִּצְפְּנוֹAnd she said,וַתֹּאמֶר“Yes,כֵּןthe menהָאֲנָשִׁיםcameבָּאוּto me,אֵלַיbutוְI did notלֹאknowיָדַעְתִּיwhereמֵאַיִןthey were from.הֵמָּה
Whenוַיְהִיthe gateהַשַּׁעַרwas about to be shutלִסְגּוֹרat dark,בַּחֹשֶׁךְthe menוְהָאֲנָשִׁיםwent out.יָצָאוּI do notלֹאknowיָדַעְתִּיwhereאָנָהthe menהָאֲנָשִׁיםwent.הָלְכוּPursueרִדְפוּthemאַחֲרֵיהֶםquickly,מַהֵרforכִּיyou will overtake them.”תַשִּׂיגוּם
But sheוְהִיאhad brought them upהֶעֱלָתַםto the roofהַגָּגָהand hidden themוַתִּטְמְנֵםamong the stalksבְּ הָעֵץof flaxפִשְׁתֵּיthat she had laid outהָעֲרֻכוֹת לָהּonעַלthe roof.הַגָּג
So the menוְהָאֲנָשִׁיםpursued themרָדְפוּ אַחֲרֵיהֶםby the wayדֶּרֶךְto the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּןas far asעַלthe fords,הַמַּעְבְּרוֹתand they shutוְ סָגָרוּthe gateהַשַּׁעַרafterאַחֲרֵי כַּאֲשֶׁרthe pursuersהָרֹדְפִיםhad gone outיָצְאוּafter them.אַחֲרֵיהֶם
Theyוְהֵמָּהhad not yetטֶרֶםlain downיִשְׁכָּבוּןwhen sheוְהִיאcame upעָלְתָהto themעֲלֵיהֶםonעַלthe roof,הַגָּג
and she saidוַתֹּאמֶרtoאֶלthe men,הָאֲנָשִׁים“I knowיָדַעְתִּיthatכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhas givenנָתַןyouלָכֶםthe land,אֶת הָאָרֶץand thatוְכִיthe terror of youאֵימַתְכֶםhas fallenנָפְלָהon us,עָלֵינוּand thatוְכִיallכָּלthe inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵיof the landהָאָרֶץhave melted awayנָמֹגוּbefore you.מִפְּנֵיכֶם
Forכִּיwe have heardשָׁמַעְנוּhowאֵת אֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהdried upהוֹבִישׁthe waterאֶת מֵיof the Seaיַםof Reedsסוּףbefore youמִפְּנֵיכֶםwhen you came outבְּצֵאתְכֶםof Egypt,מִמִּצְרָיִםand whatוַאֲשֶׁרyou didעֲשִׂיתֶםto the twoלִשְׁנֵיkingsמַלְכֵיof the Amoriteהָאֱמֹרִיwho wereאֲשֶׁרbeyondבְּעֵבֶרthe Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןto Sihonלְסִיחֹןand to Og,וּלְעוֹגwhomאֲשֶׁר אוֹתָםyou devoted to destruction.הֶחֱרַמְתֶּם
We heard it,וַנִּשְׁמַעandוַour heartלְבָבֵנוּmelted,יִּמַּסand there did notוְלֹאremainקָמָהany moreעוֹדspiritרוּחַin any manבְּאִישׁbecause of you,מִפְּנֵיכֶםforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim,אֱלֹהֵיכֶםhe isהוּאElohimאֱלֹהִיםin the heavensבַּשָּׁמַיִםaboveמִמַּעַלand onוְעַלthe earthהָאָרֶץbelow.מִתָּחַת
Nowוְעַתָּהpleaseנָאswearהִשָּׁבְעוּto meלִיby YHWH,בַּיהוָהsinceכִּיI have shownעָשִׂיתִיloyal loveחָסֶדto you,עִמָּכֶםthat youאַתֶּםalsoגַּםwill showוַעֲשִׂיתֶםloyal loveחֶסֶדtoעִםthe houseבֵּיתof my father,אָבִיand giveוּנְתַתֶּםmeלִיa signאוֹתof truth,אֱמֶת
that you will keep aliveוְהַחֲיִתֶםmy fatherאֶת אָבִיand my motherוְאֶת אִמִּיand my brothersוְאֶת אַחַיand my sistersוְאֶת אַחְיוֹתַיand allוְאֵת כָּלthatאֲשֶׁרthey have,לָהֶםand deliverוְהִצַּלְתֶּםour livesאֶת נַפְשֹׁתֵינוּfrom death.”מִמָּוֶת
And the menוַ הָאֲנָשִׁיםsaidיֹּאמְרוּto her,לָהּ“Our lifeנַפְשֵׁנוּfor yoursתַחְתֵּיכֶםto the death,לָמוּתifאִםyou do notלֹאtellתַגִּידוּthisזֶהmatter of ours.אֶת דְּבָרֵנוּAnd it shall be,וְהָיָהwhen YHWHבְּ יְהוָהgivesתֵתusלָנוּthe land,אֶת הָאָרֶץthat we will showוְעָשִׂינוּyouעִמָּךְloyal loveחֶסֶדand faithfulness.”וֶאֱמֶת
Then she let them downוַתּוֹרִדֵםby a ropeבַּחֶבֶלthroughבְּעַדthe window,הַחַלּוֹןforכִּיher houseבֵיתָהּwas in the wallבְּקִירof the city wall,הַחוֹמָהand sheוּ הִיאlivedיוֹשָׁבֶתin the city wall.בַחוֹמָה
She saidוַתֹּאמֶרto them,לָהֶם“Goלֵּכוּto the hill country,הָהָרָהorפֶּןthe pursuersהָרֹדְפִיםwill come uponיִפְגְּעוּyou.בָכֶםHideוְנַחְבֵּתֶםthereשָׁמָּהthreeשְׁלֹשֶׁתdaysיָמִיםuntilעַדthe pursuersהָרֹדְפִיםreturn,שׁוֹבand afterwardוְאַחַרyou may goתֵּלְכוּon your way.”לְדַרְכְּכֶם
The menהָאֲנָשִׁיםsaidוַיֹּאמְרוּto her,אֵלֶיהָ“Weאֲנַחְנוּwill be freeנְקִיִּםfrom thisהַזֶּהoath of yoursמִשְּׁבֻעָתֵךְthatאֲשֶׁרyou have made us swear.הִשְׁבַּעְתָּנוּ
Look,הִנֵּהwhen weאֲנַחְנוּcomeבָאִיםinto the land,בָּאָרֶץyou shall tieתִּקְשְׁרִיthisהַזֶּהcordאֶת תִּקְוַתof scarletהַשָּׁנִיthreadחוּטin the windowבַּחַלּוֹןthrough whichאֲשֶׁר בוֹyou let us down,הוֹרַדְתֵּנוּand you shall gatherתַּאַסְפִיto yourselfאֵלַיִךְinto the houseהַבָּיְתָהyour father,וְאֶת אָבִיךְyour mother,וְאֶת אִמֵּךְyour brothers,וְאֶת אַחַיִךְand allוְאֵת כָּלthe houseבֵּיתof your father.אָבִיךְ
And it shall beוְהָיָהthat anyoneכֹּלwhoאֲשֶׁרgoes outיֵצֵאof the doorsמִדַּלְתֵיof your houseבֵיתֵךְoutside,הַחוּצָהhis blood shall beדָּמוֹon his head,בְרֹאשׁוֹand weוַאֲנַחְנוּshall be free;נְקִיִּםbut anyoneוְכֹלwhoאֲשֶׁרisיִהְיֶהwith youאִתָּךְin the house,בַּבַּיִתhis blood shall beדָּמוֹon our headבְרֹאשֵׁנוּifאִםa handיָדisתִּהְיֶהon him.בּוֹ
But ifוְאִםyou tellתַּגִּידִיthisזֶהmatter of ours,אֶת דְּבָרֵנוּthen we will beוְהָיִינוּfreeנְקִיִּםfrom your oathמִשְּׁבֻעָתֵךְthatאֲשֶׁרyou have made us swear.”הִשְׁבַּעְתָּנוּ
She said,וַתֹּאמֶר“According to your words,כְּדִבְרֵיכֶםsoכֶּןit is.”הוּאThen she sent them away,וַתְּשַׁלְּחֵםand they went.וַיֵּלֵכוּAnd she tiedוַתִּקְשֹׁרthe cordאֶת תִּקְוַתof scarletהַשָּׁנִיin the window.בַּחַלּוֹן
They wentוַיֵּלְכוּand cameוַיָּבֹאוּto the hill countryהָהָרָהand stayedוַיֵּשְׁבוּthereשָׁםthreeשְׁלֹשֶׁתdaysיָמִיםuntilעַדthe pursuersהָרֹדְפִיםhad returned.שָׁבוּThe pursuersהָרֹדְפִיםsearchedוַיְבַקְשׁוּalong allבְּכָלthe wayהַדֶּרֶךְbut did notוְלֹאfind them.מָצָאוּ
Then the twoוַ שְׁנֵיmenהָאֲנָשִׁיםreturnedיָּשֻׁבוּand came downוַיֵּרְדוּfrom the hill countryמֵהָהָרand crossed overוַיַּעַבְרוּand cameוַיָּבֹאוּtoאֶלJoshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַsonבִּןof Nun,נוּןand they toldוַיְסַפְּרוּhimלוֹallאֵת כָּלthat had happened to them.הַמֹּצְאוֹת אוֹתָם
And they saidוַיֹּאמְרוּtoאֶלJoshua,יְהוֹשֻׁעַ“YHWHיְהוָהhas givenנָתַןinto our handבְּיָדֵנוּallאֶת כָּלthe land;הָאָרֶץand alsoוְגַםallכָּלthe inhabitantsיֹשְׁבֵיof the landהָאָרֶץhave melted awayנָמֹגוּbefore us.”מִפָּנֵינוּ
