Joshuaיְהוֹשֻׁעַrose earlyוַיַּשְׁכֵּםin the morning,בַּבֹּקֶרand they set outוַיִּסְעוּfrom Shittimמֵהַשִּׁטִּיםand cameוַיָּבֹאוּtoעַדthe Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןheהוּאand allוְכָלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלand they spent the nightוַיָּלִנוּthereשָׁםbeforeטֶרֶםthey crossed.יַעֲבֹרוּ
And it came about,וַיְהִיat the endמִקְצֵהof threeשְׁלֹשֶׁתdays,יָמִיםthat the supervisorsהַשֹּׁטְרִיםpassedוַיַּעַבְרוּthrough the middleבְּקֶרֶבof the campהַמַּחֲנֶה
and commandedוַיְצַוּוּthe people,אֶת הָעָםsaying,לֵאמֹר“When you seeכִּרְאוֹתְכֶםthe arkאֵת אֲרוֹןof the covenantבְּרִיתof YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֵיכֶםand the priests,וְהַכֹּהֲנִיםthe Levites,הַלְוִיִּםcarryingנֹשְׂאִיםit,אֹתוֹthen youוְאַתֶּםshall set outתִּסְעוּfrom your placeמִמְּקוֹמְכֶםand goוַהֲלַכְתֶּםafter it.אַחֲרָיו
Butאַךְthere shall beיִהְיֶהa distanceרָחוֹקbetween youבֵּינֵיכֶםand itוּבֵינָיוof about two thousandכְּאַלְפַּיִםcubitsאַמָּהby measure.בַּמִּדָּהDo notאַלcome nearתִּקְרְבוּit,אֵלָיוso thatלְמַעַן אֲשֶׁרyou may knowתֵּדְעוּthe wayאֶת הַדֶּרֶךְby whichאֲשֶׁר בָהּyou are to go,תֵּלְכוּforכִּיyou have notלֹאpassedעֲבַרְתֶּםthis wayבַּדֶּרֶךְbefore.”מִתְּמוֹל שִׁלְשׁוֹם
Then Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַsaidיֹּאמֶרto the people,אֶל הָעָם“Sanctify yourselves,הִתְקַדָּשׁוּforכִּיtomorrowמָחָרYHWHיְהוָהwill doיַעֲשֶׂהwondersנִפְלָאוֹתamong you.”בְּקִרְבְּכֶם
And Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלthe priests,הַכֹּהֲנִים“Carryשְׂאוּthe arkאֶת אֲרוֹןof the covenantהַבְּרִיתand pass onוְעִבְרוּbeforeלִפְנֵיthe people.”הָעָםSo they carriedוַיִּשְׂאוּthe arkאֶת אֲרוֹןof the covenantהַבְּרִיתand wentוַיֵּלְכוּbeforeלִפְנֵיthe people.הָעָם
YHWHיְהוָהsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלJoshua,יְהוֹשֻׁעַ“ThisהַזֶּהdayהַיּוֹםI will beginאָחֵלto make you greatגַּדֶּלְךָin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof allכָּלIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלso thatאֲשֶׁרthey may knowיֵדְעוּןthatכִּיjust asכַּאֲשֶׁרI wasהָיִיתִיwithעִםMoses,מֹשֶׁהI will beאֶהְיֶהwith you.עִמָּךְ
And youוְאַתָּהshall commandתְּצַוֶּהthe priestsאֶת הַכֹּהֲנִיםwho carryנֹשְׂאֵיthe arkאֲרוֹןof the covenant,הַבְּרִיתsaying,לֵאמֹר‘When you comeכְּבֹאֲכֶםtoעַדthe edgeקְצֵהof the waterמֵיof the Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןyou shall stopתַּעֲמֹדוּin the Jordan.’”בַּיַּרְדֵּן
And Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַsaidיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵל“Come nearגֹּשׁוּhereהֵנָּהand listen toוְשִׁמְעוּthe wordsאֶת דִּבְרֵיof YHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim.”אֱלֹהֵיכֶם
And Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַsaid,יֹּאמֶר“By thisבְּזֹאתyou shall knowתֵּדְעוּןthatכִּיa livingחַיElאֵלis among you,בְּקִרְבְּכֶםand that he will certainly dispossessוְהוֹרֵשׁ יוֹרִישׁfrom before youמִפְּנֵיכֶםthe Canaanite,אֶת הַכְּנַעֲנִיthe Hittite,וְאֶת הַחִתִּיthe Hivite,וְאֶת הַחִוִּיthe Perizzite,וְאֶת הַפְּרִזִּיthe Girgashite,וְאֶת הַגִּרְגָּשִׁיthe Amorite,וְהָאֱמֹרִיand the Jebusite.וְהַיְבוּסִי
Look,הִנֵּהthe arkאֲרוֹןof the covenantהַבְּרִיתof the Lordאֲדוֹןof allכָּלthe earthהָאָרֶץis crossingעֹבֵרbefore youלִפְנֵיכֶםinto the Jordan.בַּיַּרְדֵּן
Nowוְעַתָּהtakeקְחוּfor yourselvesלָכֶםtwelveשְׁנֵי עָשָׂרmenאִישׁfrom the tribesמִשִּׁבְטֵיof Israel,יִשְׂרָאֵלone manאִישׁ אֶחָד אִישׁ אֶחָדfor each tribe.לַשָּׁבֶט
And it shall be,וְהָיָהwhenכְּthe solesכַּפּוֹתof the feetרַגְלֵיof the priestsהַכֹּהֲנִיםwho carryנֹשְׂאֵיthe arkאֲרוֹןof YHWH,יְהוָהthe Lordאֲדוֹןof allכָּלthe earth,הָאָרֶץrestנוֹחַin the watersבְּמֵיof the Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןthat the watersמֵיof the Jordanהַיַּרְדֵּןwill be cut off,יִכָּרֵתוּןthe watersהַמַּיִםthat come downהַיֹּרְדִיםfrom above,מִלְמָעְלָהand they will standוְיַעַמְדוּin oneאֶחָדheap.”נֵד
And it came about,וַיְהִיwhenבִּthe peopleהָעָםset outנְסֹעַfrom their tentsמֵאָהֳלֵיהֶםto crossלַעֲבֹרthe Jordan,אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּןwith the priestsוְהַכֹּהֲנִיםcarryingנֹשְׂאֵיthe arkהָאָרוֹןof the covenantהַבְּרִיתbeforeלִפְנֵיthe people,הָעָם
and whenוּכְthose carryingנֹשְׂאֵיthe arkהָאָרוֹןcameבוֹאtoעַדthe Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןand the feetוְרַגְלֵיof the priestsהַכֹּהֲנִיםcarryingנֹשְׂאֵיthe arkהָאָרוֹןwere dippedנִטְבְּלוּin the edgeבִּקְצֵהof the waterהַמָּיִם—and the Jordanוְהַיַּרְדֵּןis fullמָלֵאoverעַלallכָּלits banksגְּדוֹתָיוallכֹּלthe daysיְמֵיof harvest—קָצִיר
the watersהַמַּיִםcoming downהַיֹּרְדִיםfrom aboveמִלְמַעְלָהstopped;וַיַּעַמְדוּthey rose upקָמוּin oneאֶחָדheap,נֵדveryמְאֹדfar away,הַרְחֵקat Adam,מֵאָדָםthe cityהָעִירthat isאֲשֶׁרbesideמִצַּדZarethan,צָרְתָןand those flowing downוְהַיֹּרְדִיםtowardעַלthe Seaיָםof the Arabah,הָעֲרָבָהthe SaltהַמֶּלַחSea,יָםcame to an end,תַּמּוּwere cut off.נִכְרָתוּAnd the peopleוְהָעָםcrossedעָבְרוּoppositeנֶגֶדJericho.יְרִיחוֹ
The priestsהַכֹּהֲנִיםcarryingנֹשְׂאֵיthe arkהָאָרוֹןof the covenantבְּרִיתof YHWHיְהוָהstoodוַיַּעַמְדוּfirmהָכֵןon dry landבֶּחָרָבָהin the middleבְּתוֹךְof the Jordan,הַיַּרְדֵּןwhile allוְכָלIsraelיִשְׂרָאֵלwas crossingעֹבְרִיםon dry land,בֶּחָרָבָהuntilעַד אֲשֶׁרallכָּלthe nationהַגּוֹיhad finishedתַּמּוּcrossingלַעֲבֹרthe Jordan.אֶת הַיַּרְדֵּן
