Places in this verse
1Jordan
Today: Jordan River: Israel, West Bank, Jordan, Dead Sea
Israel's main river; it flows from Mount Hermon in the north, through the Sea of Galilee, to the Dead Sea.
Israel crossed it on dry ground to enter the promised land (Josh 3:17). Naaman was healed in it (2 Kgs 5:14), and Jesus was immersed in it (Matt 3:13).
2Gilgal ?
Today: disputed; near Jericho, West Bank
A place near Jericho in the Jordan valley; the exact site is not certain.
Israel camped there after crossing the Jordan and set up twelve stones (Josh 4:19-20). Saul was confirmed as king there (1 Sam 11:15).
3Jericho
Today: Jericho (Ariha), West Bank
A city in the Jordan valley, about 15 miles (25 km) northeast of Jerusalem and not far from the river.
It was the first city Israel took in Canaan; its walls fell (Josh 6:20). Centuries later Jesus passed through Jericho and saved Zacchaeus (Luke 19:1-10).
The context
18And it came about, when the priests carrying the ark of the covenant of YHWH came up from the middle of the Jordan, and the soles of the feet of the priests were pulled up onto the dry land, that the waters of the Jordan returned to their place and went as before over all its banks.
19 · This verse (above)
