SamuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלallכָּלIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵל“Look,הִנֵּהI have listenedשָׁמַעְתִּיto your voiceבְקֹלְכֶםin allלְכֹלthatאֲשֶׁרyou saidאֲמַרְתֶּםto me,לִיand I have made a kingוָאַמְלִיךְ מֶלֶךְover you.עֲלֵיכֶם
And now,וְעַתָּהlook,הִנֵּהthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְwalksמִתְהַלֵּךְbefore you,לִפְנֵיכֶםand Iוַאֲנִיam oldזָקַנְתִּיand gray,וָשַׂבְתִּיand my sons,וּבָנַיlook, theyהִנָּםare with you.אִתְּכֶםAnd Iוַאֲנִיhave walkedהִתְהַלַּכְתִּיbefore youלִפְנֵיכֶםfrom my youthמִנְּעֻרַיuntilעַדthisהַזֶּהday.הַיּוֹם
Here I am;הִנְנִיanswerעֲנוּagainst meבִיbeforeנֶגֶדYHWHיְהוָהand beforeוְנֶגֶדhis anointed:מְשִׁיחוֹwhoseמִיoxאֶת שׁוֹרhave I taken,לָקַחְתִּיor whoseוַ מִיdonkeyחֲמוֹרhave I taken,לָקַחְתִּיor whomוְאֶת מִיhave I exploited,עָשַׁקְתִּיwhomאֶת מִיhave I crushed,רַצּוֹתִיor from the handוּמִיַּדof whomמִיhave I takenלָקַחְתִּיcompensationכֹפֶרto coverוְאַעְלִיםmy eyesעֵינַיwith it?בּוֹAnd I will return itוְאָשִׁיבto you.”לָכֶם
They said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“You have notלֹאexploited us,עֲשַׁקְתָּנוּand you have notוְלֹאcrushed us,רַצּוֹתָנוּand you have notוְלֹאtakenלָקַחְתָּanythingמְאוּמָהfrom the handמִיַּדof anyone.”אִישׁ
He saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵיהֶם“YHWHיְהוָהis witnessעֵדagainst you,בָּכֶםand his anointedוְ מְשִׁיחוֹis witnessעֵדthisהַזֶּהday,הַיּוֹםthatכִּיyou have notלֹאfoundמְצָאתֶםanythingמְאוּמָהin my hand.”בְּיָדִיAnd he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Witness.”עֵד
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלthe people,הָעָם“It is YHWHיְהוָהwhoאֲשֶׁרmadeעָשָׂהMosesאֶת מֹשֶׁהand Aaron,וְאֶת אַהֲרֹןand whoוַאֲשֶׁרbrought upהֶעֱלָהyour fathersאֶת אֲבֹתֵיכֶםfrom the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt.מִצְרָיִם
And now,וְעַתָּהpresent yourselves,הִתְיַצְּבוּand I will enter into judgmentוְאִשָּׁפְטָהwith youאִתְּכֶםbeforeלִפְנֵיYHWHיְהוָהconcerning allאֵת כָּלthe righteous actsצִדְקוֹתof YHWHיְהוָהthatאֲשֶׁרhe didעָשָׂהwith youאִתְּכֶםand with your fathers.וְאֶת אֲבוֹתֵיכֶם
WhenכַּאֲשֶׁרJacobיַעֲקֹבcameבָּאto Egypt,מִצְרָיִםyour fathersאֲבוֹתֵיכֶםcried outוַיִּזְעֲקוּtoאֶלYHWH,יְהוָהand YHWHוַ יְהוָהsentיִּשְׁלַחMosesאֶת מֹשֶׁהand Aaron,וְאֶת אַהֲרֹןand they broughtוַיּוֹצִיאוּyour fathersאֶת אֲבֹתֵיכֶםout of Egyptמִמִּצְרַיִםand settled themוַיֹּשִׁבוּםin thisבַּ הַזֶּהplace.מָּקוֹם
But they forgotוַיִּשְׁכְּחוּYHWHאֶת יְהוָהtheir Elohim,אֱלֹהֵיהֶםand he soldוַיִּמְכֹּרthemאֹתָםinto the handבְּיַדof Sisera,סִיסְרָאcommanderשַׂרof the armyצְבָאof Hazor,חָצוֹרand into the handוּבְיַדof the Philistines,פְּלִשְׁתִּיםand into the handוּבְיַדof the kingמֶלֶךְof Moab,מוֹאָבand they foughtוַיִּלָּחֲמוּagainst them.בָּם
They cried outוַיִּזְעֲקוּtoאֶלYHWHיְהוָהand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ‘We have sinned,חָטָאנוּforכִּיwe have forsakenעָזַבְנוּYHWHאֶת יְהוָהand have servedוַנַּעֲבֹדthe Baalsאֶת הַבְּעָלִיםand the Astartes.וְאֶת הָעַשְׁתָּרוֹתAnd nowוְעַתָּהdeliver usהַצִּילֵנוּfrom the handמִיַּדof our enemies,אֹיְבֵינוּand we will serve you.’וְנַעַבְדֶךָּ
YHWHיְהוָהsentוַיִּשְׁלַחJerubbaalאֶת יְרֻבַּעַלand Bedanוְאֶת בְּדָןand Jephthahוְאֶת יִפְתָּחand Samuel,וְאֶת שְׁמוּאֵלand he deliveredוַיַּצֵּלyouאֶתְכֶםfrom the handמִיַּדof your enemiesאֹיְבֵיכֶםall around,מִסָּבִיבand you livedוַתֵּשְׁבוּin security.בֶּטַח
But you sawוַתִּרְאוּthatכִּיNahashנָחָשׁkingמֶלֶךְof the sonsבְּנֵיof Ammonעַמּוֹןcameבָּאagainst you,עֲלֵיכֶםand you saidוַתֹּאמְרוּto me,לִי‘No,לֹאbutכִּיa kingמֶלֶךְshall reignיִמְלֹךְover us,’עָלֵינוּwhen YHWHוַיהוָהyour Elohimאֱלֹהֵיכֶםwas your king.מַלְכְּכֶם
And now,וְעַתָּהlook,הִנֵּהthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְwhomאֲשֶׁרyou have chosen,בְּחַרְתֶּםwhomאֲשֶׁרyou asked for;שְׁאֶלְתֶּםand look,וְהִנֵּהYHWHיְהוָהhas setנָתַןa kingמֶלֶךְover you.עֲלֵיכֶם
Ifאִםyou fearתִּירְאוּYHWHאֶת יְהוָהand serveוַעֲבַדְתֶּםhimאֹתוֹand listenוּשְׁמַעְתֶּםto his voiceבְּקֹלוֹand do notוְלֹאrebel againstתַמְרוּthe commandאֶת פִּיof YHWH,יְהוָהand bothוִ גַּםyouאַתֶּםandוְגַםthe kingהַמֶּלֶךְwhoאֲשֶׁרreignsמָלַךְover youעֲלֵיכֶםare followingהְיִתֶםafterאַחַרYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim…אֱלֹהֵיכֶם
But ifוְאִםyou do notלֹאlistenתִשְׁמְעוּto the voiceבְּקוֹלof YHWHיְהוָהand rebel againstוּמְרִיתֶםthe commandאֶת פִּיof YHWH,יְהוָהthen the handוְ יַדof YHWHיְהוָהwill beהָיְתָהagainst youבָּכֶםand against your fathers.וּבַאֲבֹתֵיכֶם
Evenגַּםnow,עַתָּהpresent yourselvesהִתְיַצְּבוּand seeוּרְאוּthisאֶת הַזֶּהgreatהַגָּדוֹלthingהַדָּבָרthatאֲשֶׁרYHWHיְהוָהis doingעֹשֶׂהbefore your eyes.לְעֵינֵיכֶם
Is it notהֲלוֹאthe harvestקְצִירof wheatחִטִּיםtoday?הַיּוֹםI will callאֶקְרָאtoאֶלYHWH,יְהוָהand he will giveוְיִתֵּןthunderקֹלוֹתand rain;וּמָטָרand knowוּדְעוּand seeוּרְאוּthatכִּיyour evilרָעַתְכֶםis great,רַבָּהwhichאֲשֶׁרyou have doneעֲשִׂיתֶםin the eyesבְּעֵינֵיof YHWH,יְהוָהby askingלִשְׁאוֹלfor yourselvesלָכֶםa king.”מֶלֶךְ
SamuelשְׁמוּאֵלcalledוַיִּקְרָאtoאֶלYHWH,יְהוָהand YHWHוַ יְהוָהgaveיִּתֵּןthunderקֹלֹתand rainוּמָטָרon thatבַּ הַהוּאday,יּוֹםand allוַ כָלthe peopleהָעָםgreatlyמְאֹדfearedיִּירָאYHWHאֶת יְהוָהand Samuel.וְאֶת שְׁמוּאֵל
Allכָלthe peopleהָעָםsaidוַיֹּאמְרוּtoאֶלSamuel,שְׁמוּאֵל“Prayהִתְפַּלֵּלforבְּעַדyour servantsעֲבָדֶיךָtoאֶלYHWHיְהוָהyour Elohim,אֱלֹהֶיךָthat we may notוְאַלdie,נָמוּתforכִּיwe have addedיָסַפְנוּtoעַלallכָּלour sinsחַטֹּאתֵינוּthe evilרָעָהof askingלִשְׁאֹלfor ourselvesלָנוּa king.”מֶלֶךְ
Samuelשְׁמוּאֵלsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלthe people,הָעָם“Do notאַלfear.תִּירָאוּYouאַתֶּםhave doneעֲשִׂיתֶםallאֵת כָּלthisהַזֹּאתevil;הָרָעָהonlyאַךְdo notאַלturn asideתָּסוּרוּfrom followingמֵאַחֲרֵיYHWH,יְהוָהbut serveוַעֲבַדְתֶּםYHWHאֶת יְהוָהwith allבְּכָלyour heart.לְבַבְכֶם
And do notוְלֹאturn aside,תָּסוּרוּforכִּיthat would be going afterאַחֲרֵיemptinessהַתֹּהוּthatאֲשֶׁרdoes notלֹאprofitיוֹעִילוּorוְלֹאdeliver,יַצִּילוּforכִּיthey areהֵמָּהemptiness.תֹהוּ
ForכִּיYHWHיְהוָהwill notלֹאabandonיִטֹּשׁhis peopleאֶת עַמּוֹfor the sakeבַּעֲבוּרof his great name,שְׁמוֹ הַגָּדוֹלforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhas been pleasedהוֹאִילto makeלַעֲשׂוֹתyouאֶתְכֶםa peopleלְעָםfor himself.לוֹ
As for me,גַּם אָנֹכִיfar be itחָלִילָהfrom meלִּיto sinמֵחֲטֹאagainst YHWHלַיהוָהby ceasingמֵחֲדֹלto prayלְהִתְפַּלֵּלfor you;בַּעַדְכֶםand I will instructוְהוֹרֵיתִיyouאֶתְכֶםin the goodבְּ הַטּוֹבָהand rightוְהַיְשָׁרָהway.דֶרֶךְ
OnlyאַךְfearיְראוּYHWHאֶת יְהוָהand serveוַעֲבַדְתֶּםhimאֹתוֹin truthבֶּאֱמֶתwith allבְּכָלyour heart,לְבַבְכֶםforכִּיseeרְאוּwhatאֵת אֲשֶׁרgreat things he has doneהִגְדִּלwith you.עִמָּכֶם
But ifוְאִםyou reallyהָרֵעַdo evil,תָּרֵעוּbothגַּםyouאַתֶּםand your kingגַּם מַלְכְּכֶםwill be swept away.”תִּסָּפוּ
