The law and the prophets announce that, if the people turn away, they will be struck down before their enemies (Leviticus 26:17; Deuteronomy 28:25).
How we translate it
“Struck down” 22 times and “struck” 8, “strike” and “will strike” 9. In battles the same verb is kept for the defeated army: “Israel was struck down before the Philistines” (1 Samuel 4:2), as in the curses of the covenant (Leviticus 26:17); “defeated” in Deuteronomy 28:25. When it is the foot hitting a stone, “so that you do not strike your foot against a stone” (Psalm 91:12) or “will not stumble” (Proverbs 3:23); “hurt” in Exodus 21:22.
