Portion, share: what falls to someone in a division, whether of land, food or spoil; and, by extension, what falls to someone in life. It is the noun of חָלַק (divide, H2505).

Historical and cultural background

The Levites received no land in the division: “I {am} your portion and your inheritance among the sons of Israel”, YHWH says to Aaron (Numbers 18:20).
