To pour, to pour out a liquid; and, with metals, to melt them and pour them into a mold. BDB adds that what is cast becomes solid, hence the sense of being firm. From the same root is יְצֻקָה, ‘casting’.

Historical and cultural background

To consecrate Aaron and to anoint a king, oil was poured on the head (Leviticus 8:12; 1 Samuel 10:1; 2 Kings 9:3).

How we translate it

“Pour” with liquids (“poured” 17 times, “pour” 13) and “cast” with metals (“cast” 10, “he cast” 4). In Job, where what is cast is what is hard, it is rendered “firm” (4). In 2 Kings 3:11 the image “poured water on the hands of Elijah” is kept, with a note, and in 2 Kings 4:41, of the stew, “Pour out {some} for the people”.
