Forγὰρthe one whoὁspeaksλαλῶνin a tongueγλώσσῃdoes notοὐκspeakλαλεῖto peopleἀνθρώποιςbutἀλλὰto God;θεῷforγὰρno oneοὐδεὶςunderstands him,ἀκούειbutδὲby the Spiritπνεύματιhe speaksλαλεῖmysteries.μυστήρια
Butδὲthe one whoὁprophesiesπροφητεύωνspeaksλαλεῖto peopleἀνθρώποιςwords ofbuilding upοἰκοδομὴνandκαὶencouragementπαράκλησινandκαὶcomfort.παραμυθίαν
The one whoὁspeaksλαλῶνin a tongueγλώσσῃbuilds upοἰκοδομεῖhimself,ἑαυτὸνbutδὲthe one whoὁprophesiesπροφητεύωνbuilds upοἰκοδομεῖthe assembly.ἐκκλησίαν
NowδὲI wantθέλωallπάνταςof youὑμᾶςto speakλαλεῖνin tongues,γλώσσαιςbutδὲeven moreμᾶλλονthatἵναyou prophesy;προφητεύητεandδὲthe one whoὁprophesiesπροφητεύωνisgreaterμείζωνthanἢthe one whoὁspeaksλαλῶνin tongues,γλώσσαιςunlessἐκτὸς εἰ μὴhe interprets,διερμηνεύῃso thatἵναthe assemblyἡ ἐκκλησίαmay receiveλάβῃbuilding up.οἰκοδομὴν
Butδέnow,Νῦνbrothers,ἀδελφοίifἐὰνI comeἔλθωtoπρὸςyouὑμᾶςspeakingλαλῶνin tongues,γλώσσαιςhowτίwill I benefitὠφελήσωyouὑμᾶςunlessἐὰν μὴI speakλαλήσωto youὑμῖνeitherἢbyἐνrevelationἀποκαλύψειorἢbyἐνknowledgeγνώσειorἢbyἐνprophecyπροφητείᾳorἢbyἐνteaching?διδαχῇ
Evenὅμωςlifeless thingsτὰ ἄψυχαthat giveδιδόνταa sound,φωνὴνwhetherεἴτεfluteαὐλὸςorεἴτεlyre,κιθάραifἐὰνthey do notμὴgiveδῷa distinctionδιαστολὴνin the notes,τοῖς φθόγγοιςhowπῶςwill it be knownγνωσθήσεταιwhat isτὸplayed on the fluteαὐλούμενονorἢwhat isτὸplayed on the lyre?κιθαριζόμενον
And indeed,καὶ γὰρifἐὰνa trumpetσάλπιγξgivesδῷan unclearἄδηλονsound,φωνὴνwhoτίςwill prepare himselfπαρασκευάσεταιforεἰςbattle?πόλεμον
Soοὕτωςalsoκαὶyou,ὑμεῖςifἐὰνthroughδιὰthe tongueτῆς γλώσσηςyou do notμὴgiveδῶτεan intelligibleεὔσημονword,λόγονhowπῶςwill it be knownγνωσθήσεταιwhat isτὸbeing said?λαλούμενονForγὰρyou will beἔσεσθεspeakingλαλοῦντεςintoεἰςthe air.ἀέρα
There areεἰσινperhapsεἰ τύχοιso manyτοσαῦταkindsγένηof languagesφωνῶνinἐνthe world,κόσμῳandκαὶnoneοὐδὲνiswithout meaning.ἄφωνον
SoοὖνifἐὰνI do notμὴknowεἰδῶthe meaningτὴν δύναμινof the language,τῆς φωνῆςI will beἔσομαιa foreignerβάρβαροςto the one who speaks,τῷ λαλοῦντιandκαὶthe one who speaksὁ λαλῶνwill bea foreignerβάρβαροςtoἐνme.ἐμοὶ
Soοὕτωςalsoκαὶyou,ὑμεῖςsinceἐπεὶyou areἐστεeager forζηλωταίspiritual gifts,πνευμάτωνseekζητεῖτεthatἵναyou may abound in themπερισσεύητεforπρὸςthe building upτὴν οἰκοδομὴνof the assembly.τῆς ἐκκλησίας
ThereforeΔιὸthe one whoὁspeaksλαλῶνin a tongueγλώσσῃshould prayπροσευχέσθωthatἵναhe may interpret.διερμηνεύῃ
ForγὰρifἐὰνI prayπροσεύχωμαιin a tongue,γλώσσῃmy spiritτὸ πνεῦμά μουprays,προσεύχεταιbutδὲmy mindὁ νοῦς μουisἐστινunfruitful.ἄκαρπός
Whatτίis itἐστινthen?οὖνI will prayπροσεύξομαιwith the spirit,τῷ πνεύματιbutδὲI will alsoκαὶprayπροσεύξομαιwith the mind;τῷ νοΐI will sing praiseψαλῶwith the spirit,τῷ πνεύματιbutδὲI will alsoκαὶsing praiseψαλῶwith the mind.τῷ νοΐ
Otherwise,ἐπεὶifἐὰνyou blessεὐλογῇςin the spirit,πνεύματιhowπῶςwill the one whoὁfillsἀναπληρῶνthe placeτὸν τόπονof the uninstructedτοῦ ἰδιώτουsayἐρεῖthe Amenτὸ Ἀμήνtoἐπὶyourτῇ σῇthanksgiving,εὐχαριστίᾳsinceἐπειδὴhe does notοὐκknowοἶδενwhatτίyou are saying?λέγεις
Forγὰρyouσὺ μὲνgive thanksεὐχαριστεῖςwell,καλῶςbutἀλλ’the other personὁ ἕτεροςis notοὐκbuilt up.οἰκοδομεῖται
I thankεὐχαριστῶGodτῷ θεῷthatI speakλαλῶin tonguesγλώσσαιςmoreμᾶλλονthan you all;πάντων ὑμῶν
butἀλλὰinἐνthe assemblyἐκκλησίᾳI would ratherθέλωspeakλαλῆσαιfiveπέντεwordsλόγουςwith my mind,τῷ νοΐ μουso thatἵναI may alsoκαὶinstructκατηχήσωothers,ἄλλουςthanἢten thousandμυρίουςwordsλόγουςinἐνa tongue.γλώσσῃ
Brothers,Ἀδελφοίdo notμὴbeγίνεσθεchildrenπαιδίαin your thinking,ταῖς φρεσίνbutἀλλὰin maliceτῇ κακίᾳbe infants,νηπιάζετεandδὲin your thinkingταῖς φρεσὶνbeγίνεσθεmature.τέλειοι
Inἐνthe lawτῷ νόμῳit is written:γέγραπταιByἘνpeople of other tonguesἑτερογλώσσοιςandκαὶbyἐνthe lipsχείλεσινof othersἑτέρωνI will speakλαλήσωto thisτούτῳpeople,τῷ λαῷandκαὶnot evenοὐδ’soοὕτωςwill they listenεἰσακούσονταίto me,μουsaysλέγειthe Lord.κύριος
So then,ὥστεtonguesαἱ γλῶσσαιareεἰσινa signεἰς σημεῖόνnotοὐfor those whoτοῖςbelieveπιστεύουσινbutἀλλὰfor unbelievers,τοῖς ἀπίστοιςwhileδὲprophecyἡ προφητείαisnotοὐfor unbelieversτοῖς ἀπίστοιςbutἀλλὰfor those whoτοῖςbelieve.πιστεύουσιν
Ifἐὰνthenοὖνthe wholeὅληassemblyἡ ἐκκλησίαcomes togetherσυνέλθῃin the same placeἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸandκαὶallπάντεςspeakλαλῶσινin tongues,γλώσσαιςandδὲuninstructed peopleἰδιῶταιorἢunbelieversἄπιστοιcome in,εἰσέλθωσινwill they notοὐκsayἐροῦσινthatὅτιyou are out of your minds?μαίνεσθε
Butδὲifἐὰνallπάντεςprophesy,προφητεύωσινandδέanτιςunbelieverἄπιστοςorἢuninstructed personἰδιώτηςcomes in,εἰσέλθῃhe is convictedἐλέγχεταιbyὑπὸall,πάντωνhe is examinedἀνακρίνεταιbyὑπὸall,πάντων
the secretsτὰ κρυπτὰof his heartτῆς καρδίας αὐτοῦbecomeγίνεταιevident,φανερὰandκαὶso,οὕτωςfallingπεσὼνonἐπὶhis face,πρόσωπονhe will worshipπροσκυνήσειGod,τῷ θεῷdeclaringἀπαγγέλλωνthatὅτιGodὁ θεὸςisἐστινreallyὌντωςamongἐνyou.ὑμῖν
WhatΤίis itἐστινthen,οὖνbrothers?ἀδελφοίWhenὅτανyou come together,συνέρχησθεeach oneἕκαστοςhasἔχειa psalm,ψαλμὸνhasἔχειa teaching,διδαχὴνhasἔχειa revelation,ἀποκάλυψινhasἔχειa tongue,γλῶσσανhasἔχειan interpretation.ἑρμηνείανLet all thingsπάνταbe doneγινέσθωforπρὸςbuilding up.οἰκοδομὴν
Ifεἴτεanyoneτιςspeaksλαλεῖin a tongue,γλώσσῃlet it bebyκατὰtwoδύοorἢat the mostτὸ πλεῖστονthree,τρεῖςandκαὶin turn,ἀνὰ μέροςandκαὶlet oneεἷςinterpret.διερμηνευέτω
Butδὲifἐὰνthere isᾖnoμὴinterpreter,διερμηνευτήςlet him be silentσιγάτωinἐνthe assembly,ἐκκλησίᾳandδὲlet him speakλαλείτωto himselfἑαυτῷandκαὶto God.τῷ θεῷ
Andδὲlet twoδύοorἢthreeτρεῖςprophetsπροφῆταιspeak,λαλείτωσανandκαὶlet the othersοἱ ἄλλοιdiscern.διακρινέτωσαν
Butδὲifἐὰνsomethingis revealedἀποκαλυφθῇto anotherἄλλῳwho is seated,καθημένῳlet the firstὁ πρῶτοςbe silent.σιγάτω
Forγὰρyou canδύνασθεallπάντεςprophesyπροφητεύεινone by one,καθ’ ἕναso thatἵναallπάντεςmay learnμανθάνωσινandκαὶallπάντεςbe encouraged.παρακαλῶνται
Andκαὶthe spiritsπνεύματαof prophetsπροφητῶνare subjectὑποτάσσεταιto prophets;προφήταις
forγάρGodὁ θεὸςisἐστινnotοὐa Godof disorderἀκαταστασίαςbutἀλλὰof peace.εἰρήνηςAsὡςinἐνallπάσαιςthe assembliesταῖς ἐκκλησίαιςof the saints,τῶν ἁγίων
let the womenΑἱ γυναῖκεςbe silentσιγάτωσανinἐνthe assemblies,ταῖς ἐκκλησίαιςforγὰρit is notοὐpermittedἐπιτρέπεταιfor themαὐταῖςto speak,λαλεῖνbutἀλλὰlet them be subject,ὑποτασσέσθωσανasκαθὼςthe lawὁ νόμοςalsoκαὶsays.λέγει
Andδέifεἰthey wantθέλουσινto learnμαθεῖνanything,τιlet them askἐπερωτάτωσανtheir ownτοὺς ἰδίουςhusbandsἄνδραςatἐνhome;οἴκῳforγάρit isἐστινshamefulαἰσχρὸνfor a womanγυναικὶto speakλαλεῖνinἐνthe assembly.ἐκκλησίᾳ
Orἢdid the wordὁ λόγοςof Godτοῦ θεοῦgo outἐξῆλθενfromἀφ’you,ὑμῶνorἢdid it reachκατήντησενonlyμόνουςyou?εἰς ὑμᾶς
IfΕἴanyoneτιςthinksδοκεῖhe isεἶναιa prophetπροφήτηςorἢspiritual,πνευματικόςlet him recognizeἐπιγινωσκέτωthatὅτιthe thingsἃI am writingγράφωto youὑμῖνareἐστίνfrom the Lord.κυρίου
Butδέifεἰanyoneτιςdoes not recognize this,ἀγνοεῖhe is not recognized.ἀγνοεῖται
So then,ὥστεmy brothers,ἀδελφοί μουearnestly desireζηλοῦτεto prophesy,τὸ προφητεύεινandκαὶdo notμὴforbidκωλύετεspeakingτὸ λαλεῖνin tongues.γλώσσαις
Butδὲlet all thingsπάνταbe doneγινέσθωproperlyεὐσχημόνωςandκαὶinκατὰorder.τάξιν
