And it happened,וַיְהִיwhen YHWHבְּ יְהוָהwas about to take upהַעֲלוֹתElijahאֵלִיָּהוּin the whirlwindבַּסְעָרָהto the heavens,הַשָּׁמָיִםthat Elijahוַ אֵלִיָּהוּand Elishaוֶאֱלִישָׁעwere goingיֵּלֶךְfromמִןGilgal.הַגִּלְגָּל
ElijahאֵלִיָּהוּsaidוַיֹּאמֶרtoאֶלElisha,אֱלִישָׁע“Stayשֵׁבhere,פֹהplease,נָאforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhas sent meשְׁלָחַנִיas far asעַדBethel.”בֵּית אֵלElishaאֱלִישָׁעsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“As YHWH livesחַי יְהוָהand as your soul lives,וְחֵי נַפְשְׁךָI will notאִםleave you.”אֶעֶזְבֶךָּSo they went downוַיֵּרְדוּto Bethel.בֵּית אֵל
The sonsוַ בְנֵיof the prophetsהַנְּבִיאִיםwho were atאֲשֶׁרBethelבֵּית אֵלcame outיֵּצְאוּtoאֶלElishaאֱלִישָׁעand saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto him,אֵלָיו“Do you knowהֲיָדַעְתָּthatכִּיtodayהַיּוֹםYHWHיְהוָהis takingלֹקֵחַyour masterאֲדֹנֶיךָfrom overמֵעַלyour head?”רֹאשֶׁךָHe said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Iאֲנִיtooגַּםknow it;יָדַעְתִּיbe silent.”הֶחֱשׁוּ
Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“Elisha,אֱלִישָׁעstayשֵׁבhere,פֹהplease,נָאforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhas sent meשְׁלָחַנִיto Jericho.”יְרִיחוֹHe said,וַיֹּאמֶר“As YHWH livesחַי יְהוָהand as your soul lives,וְחֵי נַפְשְׁךָI will notאִםleave you.”אֶעֶזְבֶךָּSo they cameוַיָּבֹאוּto Jericho.יְרִיחוֹ
The sonsוַ בְנֵיof the prophetsהַנְּבִיאִיםwho wereאֲשֶׁרin JerichoבִּירִיחוֹapproachedיִּגְּשׁוּElishaאֶל אֱלִישָׁעand saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto him,אֵלָיו“Do you knowהֲיָדַעְתָּthatכִּיtodayהַיּוֹםYHWHיְהוָהis takingלֹקֵחַyour masterאֲדֹנֶיךָfrom overמֵעַלyour head?”רֹאשֶׁךָHe said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Iאֲנִיtooגַּםknow it;יָדַעְתִּיbe silent.”הֶחֱשׁוּ
Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּsaidוַיֹּאמֶרto him,לוֹ“Stayשֵׁבhere,פֹהplease,נָאforכִּיYHWHיְהוָהhas sent meשְׁלָחַנִיto the Jordan.”הַיַּרְדֵּנָהHe said,וַיֹּאמֶר“As YHWH livesחַי יְהוָהand as your soul lives,וְחֵי נַפְשְׁךָI will notאִםleave you.”אֶעֶזְבֶךָּSo the two of themשְׁנֵיהֶםwent on.וַיֵּלְכוּ
Fiftyוַחֲמִשִּׁיםmenאִישׁofמִthe sonsבְּנֵיof the prophetsהַנְּבִיאִיםwentהָלְכוּand stoodוַיַּעַמְדוּopposite themמִנֶּגֶדat a distance,מֵרָחוֹקwhile the two of themוּשְׁנֵיהֶםstoodעָמְדוּbyעַלthe Jordan.הַיַּרְדֵּן
Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּtookוַיִּקַּחhis cloak,אַדַּרְתּוֹrolled it up,וַיִּגְלֹםand struckוַיַּכֶּהthe water,הַמַּיִםand it was dividedוַיֵּחָצוּto one sideהֵנָּהand to the other,וָהֵנָּהand the two of themוַ שְׁנֵיהֶםcrossed overיַּעַבְרוּon dry ground.בֶּחָרָבָה
And it happened,וַיְהִיwhen they had crossed over,כְעָבְרָםthat ElijahוְאֵלִיָּהוּsaidאָמַרtoאֶלElisha,אֱלִישָׁע“AskשְׁאַלwhatמָהI should doאֶעֱשֶׂהfor youלָּךְbeforeבְּטֶרֶםI am takenאֶלָּקַחfromמֵyou.”עִמָּךְElishaאֱלִישָׁעsaid,וַיֹּאמֶר“Please,נָאlet there beוִיהִיa double portionפִּי שְׁנַיִםof your spiritבְּרוּחֲךָon me.”אֵלָי
He said,וַיֹּאמֶר“You have asked a hard thing.הִקְשִׁיתָ לִשְׁאוֹלIfאִםyou seeתִּרְאֶהmeאֹתִיtakenלֻקָּחfromמֵyou,אִתָּךְit will beיְהִיsoכֵןfor you;לְךָbut ifוְאִםnot,אַיִןit will notלֹאbe.”יִהְיֶה
And it happened,וַיְהִיas theyהֵמָּהwere walking alongהֹלְכִים הָלוֹךְand talking,וְדַבֵּרthat, look,וְהִנֵּהa chariotרֶכֶבof fireאֵשׁand horsesוְסוּסֵיof fireאֵשׁseparatedוַיַּפְרִדוּthe two of them,בֵּין שְׁנֵיהֶםand Elijahוַ אֵלִיָּהוּwent upיַּעַלin the whirlwindבַּסְעָרָהto the heavens.הַשָּׁמָיִם
Elishaוֶאֱלִישָׁעwas watchingרֹאֶהand heוְהוּאwas crying out,מְצַעֵק“My father,אָבִיmy father,אָבִיthe chariotרֶכֶבof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלand its horsemen!”וּפָרָשָׁיוAnd he did notוְלֹאsee himרָאָהוּagain.עוֹדThen he took holdוַיַּחֲזֵקof his clothesבִּבְגָדָיוand tore themוַיִּקְרָעֵםin twoלִשְׁנַיִםpieces.קְרָעִים
He picked upוַיָּרֶםthe cloakאַדֶּרֶתof Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּthatאֲשֶׁרhad fallenנָפְלָהfromמֵhim,עָלָיוand went backוַיָּשָׁבand stoodוַיַּעֲמֹדonעַלthe bankשְׂפַתof the Jordan.הַיַּרְדֵּן
He tookוַיִּקַּחthe cloakאַדֶּרֶתof Elijahאֵלִיָּהוּthatאֲשֶׁרhad fallenנָפְלָהfromמֵhim,עָלָיוand struckוַיַּכֶּהthe waterהַמַּיִםand said,וַיֹּאמַר“Whereאַיֵּהis YHWH,יְהוָהthe Elohimאֱלֹהֵיof Elijah?”אֵלִיָּהוּHe tooאַף הוּאstruckוַיַּכֶּהthe water,הַמַּיִםand it was dividedוַיֵּחָצוּto one sideהֵנָּהand to the other,וָהֵנָּהand Elishaוַ אֱלִישָׁעcrossed over.יַּעֲבֹר
The sonsבְנֵיof the prophetsהַנְּבִיאִיםwho wereאֲשֶׁרin Jerichoבִּירִיחוֹsaw himוַיִּרְאֻהוּfrom acrossמִנֶּגֶדand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“The spiritרוּחַof ElijahאֵלִיָּהוּrestsנָחָהonעַלElisha.”אֱלִישָׁעThey cameוַיָּבֹאוּto meet himלִקְרָאתוֹand bowed downוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּto himלוֹto the ground.אָרְצָה
They saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto him,אֵלָיו“Look,הִנֵּהplease,נָאthere areיֵשׁwith your servantsאֶת עֲבָדֶיךָfiftyחֲמִשִּׁיםmen,אֲנָשִׁיםvaliant men.בְּנֵי חַיִלPlease let them goיֵלְכוּ נָאand search forוִיבַקְשׁוּyour master,אֶת אֲדֹנֶיךָin caseפֶּןthe spiritרוּחַof YHWHיְהוָהhas lifted him upנְשָׂאוֹand thrown himוַיַּשְׁלִכֵהוּon oneבְּאַחַדof the mountainsהֶהָרִיםorאוֹin oneבְּאַחַתof the valleys.”הַגֵּאָיוֹתHe said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Do notלֹאsend them.”תִשְׁלָחוּ
But they urgedוַיִּפְצְרוּhimבוֹuntilעַדhe was ashamed,בֹּשׁand he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Send them.”שְׁלָחוּSo they sentוַיִּשְׁלְחוּfiftyחֲמִשִּׁיםmen,אִישׁand they searchedוַיְבַקְשׁוּthreeשְׁלֹשָׁהdaysיָמִיםbut did notוְלֹאfind him.מְצָאֻהוּ
They returnedוַיָּשֻׁבוּto himאֵלָיוwhile heוְהוּאwas stayingיֹשֵׁבin Jericho,בִּירִיחוֹand he saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵהֶם“Did I notהֲלוֹאsayאָמַרְתִּיto you,אֲלֵיכֶם‘Do notאַלgo’?”תֵּלֵכוּ
The menאַנְשֵׁיof the cityהָעִירsaidוַיֹּאמְרוּtoאֶלElisha,אֱלִישָׁע“Look,הִנֵּהplease,נָאthe siteמוֹשַׁבof the cityהָעִירis good,טוֹבasכַּאֲשֶׁרmy lordאֲדֹנִיsees;רֹאֶהbut the waterוְהַמַּיִםis bad,רָעִיםand the landוְהָאָרֶץcauses miscarriage.”מְשַׁכָּלֶת
He said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Bringקְחוּmeלִיa newחֲדָשָׁהbowlצְלֹחִיתand putוְשִׂימוּsaltמֶלַחin it.”שָׁםSo they brought itוַיִּקְחוּto him.אֵלָיו
He went outוַיֵּצֵאtoאֶלthe springמוֹצָאof the waterהַמַּיִםand threwוַיַּשְׁלֶךְsaltמֶלַחinto itשָׁםand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH,יְהוָה‘I have healedרִפִּאתִיthisהָאֵלֶּהwater;לַמַּיִםfrom thereמִשָּׁםthere will noלֹאlongerעוֹדbeיִהְיֶהdeathמָוֶתor miscarriage.’”וּמְשַׁכָּלֶת
The waterהַמַּיִםwas healedוַיֵּרָפוּtoעַדthisהַזֶּהday,הַיּוֹםaccording to the wordכִּדְבַרof Elishaאֱלִישָׁעthatאֲשֶׁרhe spoke.דִּבֵּר
He went upוַיַּעַלfrom thereמִשָּׁםto Bethel,בֵּית אֵלand as heוְהוּאwas going upעֹלֶהon the road,בַדֶּרֶךְsmallקְטַנִּיםboysוּנְעָרִיםcame outיָצְאוּofמִןthe cityהָעִירand mockedוַיִּתְקַלְּסוּhimבוֹand saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto him,לוֹ“Go up,עֲלֵהbaldhead!קֵרֵחַGo up,עֲלֵהbaldhead!”קֵרֵחַ
He turnedוַיִּפֶןbehind himאַחֲרָיוand saw themוַיִּרְאֵםand cursed themוַיְקַלְלֵםin the nameבְּשֵׁםof YHWH.יְהוָהAnd twoוַ שְׁתַּיִםshe-bearsדֻּבִּיםcame outתֵּצֶאנָהofמִןthe forestהַיַּעַרand tore apartוַתְּבַקַּעְנָהfortyאַרְבָּעִיםtwoוּשְׁנֵיchildrenיְלָדִיםof them.מֵהֶם
He wentוַיֵּלֶךְfrom thereמִשָּׁםtoאֶלMountהַרCarmel,הַכַּרְמֶלand from thereוּמִשָּׁםhe returnedשָׁבto Samaria.שֹׁמְרוֹן
