To slacken, to let go: to let drop what was held tight or gripped. Hence to leave someone, to desist, and also to lose heart: slack hands are the lack of courage to go on.

How we translate it

The verb is chosen according to what slackens: “let go” when someone is released (“he will not let go of you”, Deuteronomy 31:6), “Let me alone” (Deuteronomy 9:14), “slacken” or “go slack” when it is the hands (“Their hands will slacken from the work”, Nehemiah 6:9), and “weakening the hands” (Jeremiah 38:4). Pharaoh calls Israel “lazy” (Exodus 5:17). In Psalm 46:10, “Desist”, with a note; in Judges 8:3, “their spirit toward him subsided”.
