When the people sawוַיַּרְא הָעָםthatכִּיMosesמֹשֶׁהwas delayingבֹשֵׁשׁto come downלָרֶדֶתfrom the mountain,מִן הָהָרthe peopleהָעָםgatheredוַיִּקָּהֵלaroundעַלAaronאַהֲרֹןand saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto him,אֵלָיו“Get up,קוּםmakeעֲשֵׂהfor usלָנוּgodsאֱלֹהִיםwhoאֲשֶׁרwill goיֵלְכוּbefore us;לְפָנֵינוּforכִּיthisזֶהMoses,מֹשֶׁהthe manהָאִישׁwhoאֲשֶׁרbrought us upהֶעֱלָנוּout of the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt,מִצְרַיִםwe do notלֹאknowיָדַעְנוּwhatמֶהhas happenedהָיָהto him.”לוֹ
AndוַAaronאַהֲרֹןsaidיֹּאמֶרto them,אֲלֵהֶם“Tear offפָּרְקוּthe goldהַזָּהָבearringsנִזְמֵיthat areאֲשֶׁרin the earsבְּאָזְנֵיof your wives,נְשֵׁיכֶםyour sons,בְּנֵיכֶםand your daughters,וּבְנֹתֵיכֶםand bring themוְהָבִיאוּto me.”אֵלָי
So allוַ כָּלthe peopleהָעָםtore offיִּתְפָּרְקוּthe goldהַזָּהָבearringsאֶת נִזְמֵיthat wereאֲשֶׁרin their earsבְּאָזְנֵיהֶםand brought themוַיָּבִיאוּto Aaron.אֶל אַהֲרֹן
And he took itוַיִּקַּחfrom their hand,מִיָּדָםand fashionedוַיָּצַרitאֹתוֹwith an engraving tool,בַּחֶרֶטand made itוַיַּעֲשֵׂהוּa calfעֵגֶלof cast metal.מַסֵּכָהAnd they said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ“Theseאֵלֶּהare your gods,אֱלֹהֶיךָIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלwhoאֲשֶׁרbrought you upהֶעֱלוּךָout of the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt!”מִצְרָיִם
When Aaronוַ אַהֲרֹןsaw it,יַּרְאhe builtוַיִּבֶןan altarמִזְבֵּחַbefore it;לְפָנָיוand Aaronוַ אַהֲרֹןproclaimedיִּקְרָאand said,וַיֹּאמַר“A feastחַגto YHWHלַיהוָהtomorrow!”מָחָר
And they rose earlyוַיַּשְׁכִּימוּon the next dayמִמָּחֳרָתand offeredוַיַּעֲלוּburnt offeringsעֹלֹתand broughtוַיַּגִּשׁוּpeace offerings;שְׁלָמִיםand the peopleוַ הָעָםsat downיֵּשֶׁבto eatלֶאֱכֹלand drink,וְשָׁתוֹand rose upוַיָּקֻמוּto revel.לְצַחֵק
AndוַYHWHיְהוָהspokeיְדַבֵּרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“Go,לֶךְgo down,רֵדforכִּיyour people,עַמְּךָwhomאֲשֶׁרyou brought upהֶעֱלֵיתָout of the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt,מִצְרָיִםhave acted corruptly.שִׁחֵת
They have turned asideסָרוּquicklyמַהֵרfrom the wayמִן הַדֶּרֶךְthatאֲשֶׁרI commandedצִוִּיתִthem;םthey have madeעָשׂוּfor themselvesלָהֶםa calfעֵגֶלof cast metalמַסֵּכָהand have bowed downוַיִּשְׁתַּחֲווּto itלוֹand sacrificedוַיִּזְבְּחוּto itלוֹand said,וַיֹּאמְרוּ‘Theseאֵלֶּהare your gods,אֱלֹהֶיךָIsrael,יִשְׂרָאֵלwhoאֲשֶׁרbrought you upהֶעֱלוּךָout of the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt!’”מִצְרָיִם
AndוַYHWHיְהוָהsaidיֹּאמֶרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“I have seenרָאִיתִיthisהַזֶּהpeople,אֶת הָעָםand look,וְהִנֵּהit isהוּאa stubbornקְשֵׁה עֹרֶףpeople.עַם
Nowוְעַתָּהlet me alone,הַנִּיחָה לִּיso thatוְmy angerאַפִּיmay burnיִחַרagainst themבָהֶםand I may consume them;וַאֲכַלֵּםand I will makeוְאֶעֱשֶׂהyouאוֹתְךָinto a greatלְ גָּדוֹלnation.”גוֹי
But Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהpleaded beforeיְחַל אֶת פְּנֵיYHWHיְהוָהhis Elohimאֱלֹהָיוand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Why,לָמָהYHWH,יְהוָהdoes your angerאַפְּךָburnיֶחֱרֶהagainst your people,בְּעַמֶּךָwhomאֲשֶׁרyou brought outהוֹצֵאתָfrom the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egyptמִצְרַיִםwith greatבְּ גָּדוֹלpowerכֹחַand with a strongוּבְ חֲזָקָהhand?יָד
Whyלָמָּהshould the Egyptiansמִצְרַיִםsay,יֹאמְרוּ לֵאמֹר‘With evil intentבְּרָעָהhe brought them out,הוֹצִיאָםto killלַהֲרֹגthemאֹתָםin the mountainsבֶּהָרִיםand to consume themוּלְכַלֹּתָםfrom the faceמֵעַל פְּנֵיof the ground’?הָאֲדָמָהTurnשׁוּבfrom the heatמֵחֲרוֹןof your angerאַפֶּךָand relentוְהִנָּחֵםconcerning the evilעַל הָרָעָהplanned against your people.לְעַמֶּךָ
RememberזְכֹרAbraham,לְאַבְרָהָםIsaac,לְיִצְחָקand Israel,וּלְיִשְׂרָאֵלyour servants,עֲבָדֶיךָto whomאֲשֶׁר לָהֶםyou sworeנִשְׁבַּעְתָּby yourselfבָּךְand saidוַתְּדַבֵּרto them,אֲלֵהֶם‘I will multiplyאַרְבֶּהyour offspringאֶת זַרְעֲכֶםlike the starsכְּכוֹכְבֵיof the heavens,הַשָּׁמָיִםand allוְכָלthisהַזֹּאתlandהָאָרֶץthatאֲשֶׁרI have spoken ofאָמַרְתִּיI will giveאֶתֵּןto your offspring,לְזַרְעֲכֶםand they shall inherit itוְנָחֲלוּforever.’”לְעֹלָם
And YHWHוַ יְהוָהrelentedיִּנָּחֶםconcerning the evilעַל הָרָעָהthatאֲשֶׁרhe had saidדִּבֶּרhe would doלַעֲשׂוֹתto his people.לְעַמּוֹ
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהturnedיִּפֶןand went downוַיֵּרֶדfrom the mountain,מִן הָהָרwith the twoוּשְׁנֵיtabletsלֻחֹתof the testimonyהָעֵדֻתin his hand,בְּיָדוֹtabletsלֻחֹתwrittenכְּתֻבִיםon bothמִשְּׁנֵיtheir sides;עֶבְרֵיהֶםon one sideמִזֶּהand on the otherוּמִזֶּהtheyהֵםwere written.כְּתֻבִים
And the tabletsוְהַלֻּחֹתwereהֵמָּהthe workמַעֲשֵׂהof Elohim,אֱלֹהִיםand the writingוְהַמִּכְתָּבwasהוּאthe writingמִכְתַּבof Elohim,אֱלֹהִיםengravedחָרוּתon the tablets.עַל הַלֻּחֹת
When Joshuaוַ יְהוֹשֻׁעַheardיִּשְׁמַעthe soundאֶת קוֹלof the peopleהָעָםas they shouted,בְּרֵעֹהhe saidוַיֹּאמֶרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“There is a soundקוֹלof warמִלְחָמָהin the camp.”בַּמַּחֲנֶה
But he said,וַיֹּאמֶר“It is notאֵיןthe soundקוֹלof the shoutעֲנוֹתof victory,גְּבוּרָהand it is notוְאֵיןthe soundקוֹלof the cryעֲנוֹתof defeat;חֲלוּשָׁהthe soundקוֹלof singingעַנּוֹתIאָנֹכִיhear.”שֹׁמֵעַ
And it happened,וַיְהִיas soon asכַּאֲשֶׁרhe came nearקָרַבto the campאֶל הַמַּחֲנֶהand sawוַיַּרְאthe calfאֶת הָעֵגֶלand the dancing,וּמְחֹלֹתthat Moses’מֹשֶׁהangerאַףburned,וַיִּחַרand he threwוַיַּשְׁלֵךְthe tabletsאֶת הַלֻּחֹתfrom his handsמִיָּדָיוand brokeוַיְשַׁבֵּרthemאֹתָםat the footתַּחַתof the mountain.הָהָר
And he tookוַיִּקַּחthe calfאֶת הָעֵגֶלthatאֲשֶׁרthey had madeעָשׂוּand burned itוַיִּשְׂרֹףin the fire,בָּאֵשׁand ground itוַיִּטְחַןuntilעַד אֲשֶׁרit was fine dust,דָּקand scattered itוַיִּזֶרon the surfaceעַל פְּנֵיof the waterהַמַּיִםand madeוַthe sonsאֶת בְּנֵיof Israelיִשְׂרָאֵלdrink it.יַּשְׁקְ
AndוַMosesמֹשֶׁהsaidיֹּאמֶרto Aaron,אֶל אַהֲרֹן“Whatמֶהdid this peopleעָשָׂה הָעָם הַזֶּהdo to you,לְךָthatכִּיyou have broughtהֵבֵאתָupon themעָלָיוa greatגְדֹלָהsin?”חֲטָאָה
AndוַAaronאַהֲרֹןsaid,יֹּאמֶר“Do not letאַלthe angerאַףof my lordאֲדֹנִיburn.יִחַרYouאַתָּהknowיָדַעְתָּthe people,אֶת הָעָםthatכִּיthey areהוּאset on evil.בְרָע
And they saidוַיֹּאמְרוּto me,לִי‘Makeעֲשֵׂהfor usלָנוּgodsאֱלֹהִיםwhoאֲשֶׁרwill goיֵלְכוּbefore us;לְפָנֵינוּforכִּיthisזֶהMoses,מֹשֶׁהthe manהָאִישׁwhoאֲשֶׁרbrought us upהֶעֱלָנוּout of the landמֵאֶרֶץof Egypt,מִצְרַיִםwe do notלֹאknowיָדַעְנוּwhatמֶהhas happenedהָיָהto him.’לוֹ
So I saidוָאֹמַרto them,לָהֶם‘Whoeverלְמִיhas gold,זָהָבtear it off!’הִתְפָּרָקוּAnd they gave itוַיִּתְּנוּto me,לִיand I threw itוָאַשְׁלִכֵהוּinto the fire,בָאֵשׁand out cameוַיֵּצֵאthisהַזֶּהcalf.”הָעֵגֶל
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהsawיַּרְאthe people,אֶת הָעָםthatכִּיtheyהוּאwere running wild,פָרֻעַforכִּיAaronאַהֲרֹןhad let them run wild,פְרָעֹהto the derisionלְשִׁמְצָהof those who rise up against them.בְּקָמֵיהֶם
And Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהstoodיַּעֲמֹדin the gateבְּשַׁעַרof the campהַמַּחֲנֶהand said,וַיֹּאמֶר“Whoeverמִיis for YHWH,לַיהוָהcome to me!”אֵלָיAnd allוַ כָּלthe sonsבְּנֵיof Leviלֵוִיgatheredיֵּאָסְפוּto him.אֵלָיו
And he saidוַיֹּאמֶרto them,לָהֶם“ThusכֹּהsaysאָמַרYHWH,יְהוָהElohimאֱלֹהֵיof Israel:יִשְׂרָאֵל‘Each man,אִישׁputשִׂימוּhis swordחַרְבּוֹon his side;עַל יְרֵכוֹpass throughעִבְרוּand returnוָשׁוּבוּfrom gateמִשַּׁעַרto gateלָשַׁעַרin the camp,בַּמַּחֲנֶהand kill,וְהִרְגוּeach man,אִישׁhis brother,אֶת אָחִיוand each manוְאִישׁhis companion,אֶת רֵעֵהוּand each manוְאִישׁhis relative.’”אֶת קְרֹבוֹ
And the sonsוַ בְנֵיof Leviלֵוִיdidיַּעֲשׂוּaccording to the wordכִּדְבַרof Moses,מֹשֶׁהand there fellוַיִּפֹּלof the peopleמִן הָעָםon that dayבַּיּוֹם הַהוּאabout threeכִּשְׁלֹשֶׁתthousandאַלְפֵיmen.אִישׁ
AndוַMosesמֹשֶׁהsaid,יֹּאמֶר“Consecrate yourselvesמִלְאוּ יֶדְכֶםtodayהַיּוֹםto YHWH,לַיהוָהforכִּיeach man has beenאִישׁagainst his sonבִּבְנוֹand against his brother,וּבְאָחִיוso as to bestowוְלָתֵתupon youעֲלֵיכֶםtodayהַיּוֹםa blessing.”בְּרָכָה
And it happenedוַיְהִיon the next dayמִמָּחֳרָתthat Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהsaidיֹּאמֶרto the people,אֶל הָעָם“Youאַתֶּםhave sinnedחֲטָאתֶםa greatגְדֹלָהsin.חֲטָאָהAnd nowוְעַתָּהI will go upאֶעֱלֶהto YHWH;אֶל יְהוָהperhapsאוּלַיI can make expiationאֲכַפְּרָהfor your sin.”בְּעַד חַטַּאתְכֶם
So Mosesוַ מֹשֶׁהreturnedיָּשָׁבto YHWHאֶל יְהוָהand said,וַיֹּאמַר“Alas,אָנָּאthisהַזֶּהpeopleהָעָםhas sinnedחָטָאa greatגְדֹלָהsin;חֲטָאָהthey have madeוַיַּעֲשׂוּfor themselvesלָהֶםgodsאֱלֹהֵיof gold.זָהָב
But now,וְעַתָּהifאִםyou will forgiveתִּשָּׂאtheir sin…חַטָּאתָםand ifוְאִםnot,אַיִןblot me out,מְחֵנִיplease,נָאfrom your bookמִסִּפְרְךָthatאֲשֶׁרyou have written.”כָּתָבְתָּ
AndוַYHWHיְהוָהsaidיֹּאמֶרto Moses,אֶל מֹשֶׁה“Whoeverמִי אֲשֶׁרhas sinnedחָטָאagainst me,לִיhim I will blot outאֶמְחֶנּוּfrom my book.מִסִּפְרִי
But nowוְעַתָּהgo,לֵךְleadנְחֵהthe peopleאֶת הָעָםto the place of whichאֶל אֲשֶׁרI have spokenדִּבַּרְתִּיto you.לָךְLook,הִנֵּהmy angelמַלְאָכִיshall goיֵלֵךְbefore you.לְפָנֶיךָBut on the dayוּבְיוֹםwhen I call to accountפָּקְדִיI will call them to accountוּפָקַדְתִּי עֲלֵיהֶםfor their sin.”חַטָּאתָם
And YHWHוַ יְהוָהplaguedיִּגֹּףthe peopleאֶת הָעָםbecauseעַל אֲשֶׁרthey had madeעָשׂוּthe calfאֶת הָעֵגֶלthatאֲשֶׁרAaronאַהֲרֹןmade.עָשָׂה
