ThenבֵּאדַיִןZerubbabelזְרֻבָּבֶלthe sonבַּרof Shealtielשְׁאַלְתִּיאֵלand Jeshuaוְיֵשׁוּעַthe sonבַּרof Jozadakיוֹצָדָקrose upקָמוּand beganוְשָׁרִיוto buildלְמִבְנֵאthe houseבֵּיתof Elahאֱלָהָאwhichדִּיis in Jerusalem;בִירוּשְׁלֶםand with themוְעִמְּהוֹןwere the prophetsנְבִיַּיָּאof Elah,דִי אֱלָהָאsupportingמְסָעֲדִיןthem.לְהוֹן
At thatבֵּהּtimeזִמְנָאTattenai,תַּתְּנַיgovernorפַּחַתof the other sideעֲבַרof the river,נַהֲרָהand Shethar-bozenaiוּשְׁתַר בּוֹזְנַיand their companionsוּכְנָוָתְהוֹןcameאֲתָאto them,עֲלֵיהוֹןandוְthusכֵןthey saidאָמְרִיןto them:לְהֹם“Whoמַןgaveשָׂםyouלְכֹםan orderטְעֵםto buildלִבְּנֵאthisדְנָהhouseבַּיְתָאand to finishוְ לְשַׁכְלָלָהthisדְנָהstructure?”אֻשַּׁרְנָא
Thenאֱדַיִןwe toldאֲמַרְנָאthemלְּהֹםthus:כְּנֵמָא“Whatמַןareאִנּוּןthe namesשְׁמָהָתof the menגֻּבְרַיָּאwhoדִּיare buildingבָּנַיִןthisדְנָהbuilding?”בִנְיָנָא
But the eyeוְעֵיןof their Elahאֱלָהֲהֹםwasהֲוָתuponעַלthe eldersשָׂבֵיof the Jews,יְהוּדָיֵאand they did notוְלָאmake them ceaseבַטִּלוּ הִמּוֹuntilעַדthe reportטַעְמָאshould goיְהָךְto Dariusלְדָרְיָוֶשׁand thenוֶאֱדַיִןthey should returnיְתִיבוּןa letterנִשְׁתְּוָנָאaboutעַלthis.דְּנָה
The copyפַּרְשֶׁגֶןof the letterאִגַּרְתָּאthatדִּיTattenai,תַּתְּנַיgovernorפַּחַתof the other sideעֲבַרof the river,נַהֲרָהand Shethar-bozenaiוּשְׁתַר בּוֹזְנַיand his companions,וּכְנָוָתֵהּthe Apharsachitesאֲפַרְסְכָיֵאwhoדִּיwere in the other sideבַּעֲבַרof the river,נַהֲרָהsentשְׁלַחtoעַלDariusדָּרְיָוֶשׁthe king.מַלְכָּא
They sentשְׁלַחוּa messageפִּתְגָמָאto him,עֲלוֹהִיandוְthusכִדְנָהwas writtenכְּתִיבin it:בְּגַוֵּהּ“To Dariusלְדָרְיָוֶשׁthe king:מַלְכָּאallכֹלָּאpeace.שְׁלָמָא
Let it be knownיְדִיעַ לֶהֱוֵאto the kingלְמַלְכָּאthatדִּיwe wentאֲזַלְנָאto the provinceלִ מְדִינְתָּאof Judah,יהוּדto the houseלְבֵיתof the greatרַבָּאElah;אֱלָהָאand itוְהוּאis being builtמִתְבְּנֵאwith great stones,אֶבֶן גְּלָלand timberוְאָעis being laidמִתְּשָׂםin the walls;בְּכֻתְלַיָּאandוַthatדָךְworkעֲבִידְתָּאis being doneמִתְעַבְדָאwith diligenceאָסְפַּרְנָאand prospersוּמַצְלַחin their hands.בְּיֶדְהֹם
Thenאֱדַיִןwe askedשְׁאֵלְנָאthoseאִלֵּךְeldersלְשָׂבַיָּאand thusכְּנֵמָאwe saidאֲמַרְנָאto them:לְּהֹם‘Whoמַןgaveשָׂםyouלְכֹםan orderטְעֵםto buildלְמִבְנְיָהthisדְנָהhouseבַּיְתָאand to finishוְ לְשַׁכְלָלָהthisדְנָהstructure?’אֻשַּׁרְנָא
Andוְwe askedשְׁאֵלְנָאthemלְּהֹםalsoאַףtheir names,שְׁמָהָתְהֹםto inform you,לְהוֹדָעוּתָךְso thatדִּיwe might writeנִכְתֻּבthe nameשֻׁםof the menגֻּבְרַיָּאwhoדִּיare at their head.בְרָאשֵׁיהֹם
And thusוּכְנֵמָאthey returnedהֲתִיבוּan answerפִתְגָמָאto us,נָאsaying:לְמֵמַר‘Weאֲנַחְנָאareהִמּוֹthe servantsעַבְדוֹהִיofדִיthe Elahאֱלָהּof the heavensשְׁמַיָּאand the earth,וְאַרְעָאand we are buildingוּבָנַיִןthe houseבַּיְתָאthatדִּיwasהֲוָאbuiltבְנֵהmanyשַׂגִּיאָןyearsשְׁנִיןbeforeמִקַּדְמַתthis;דְּנָהand a greatוּ רַבkingמֶלֶךְof Israelלְיִשְׂרָאֵלbuilt itבְּנָהִיand finished it.וְשַׁכְלְלֵהּ
Butלָהֵןbecauseמִן דִּיour fathersאֲבָהֳתַנָאangeredהַרְגִּזוּthe Elahלֶאֱלָהּof the heavens,שְׁמַיָּאhe gaveיְהַבthemהִמּוֹinto the handבְּיַדof Nebuchadnezzarנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרkingמֶלֶךְof Babylon,בָּבֶלthe Chaldean;כַּסְדָּאָהand thisוּ דְנָהhouseבַיְתָהhe destroyed,סַתְרֵהּand the peopleוְעַמָּהhe carried into exileהַגְלִיto Babylon.לְבָבֶל
However,בְּרַםin the firstבִּ חֲדָהyearשְׁנַתof Cyrusלְכוֹרֶשׁkingמַלְכָּאof Babylon,דִּי בָבֶלCyrusכּוֹרֶשׁthe kingמַלְכָּאgaveשָׂםan orderטְעֵםto buildלִבְּנֵאthisדְנָהhouseבֵּיתof Elah.אֱלָהָא
And alsoוְאַףthe utensilsמָאנַיָּאof the houseדִי בֵיתof Elah,אֱלָהָאof goldדִּי דַהֲבָהand of silver,וְכַסְפָּאwhichדִּיNebuchadnezzarנְבוּכַדְנֶצַּרhad brought outהַנְפֵּקfrom the templeמִן הֵיכְלָאthatדִּיwas in Jerusalemבִירוּשְׁלֶםand broughtוְהֵיבֵלthemהִמּוֹto the templeלְהֵיכְלָאofדִּיBabylon,בָבֶלCyrusכּוֹרֶשׁthe kingמַלְכָּאbrought them outהַנְפֵּק הִמּוֹfrom the templeמִן הֵיכְלָאofדִּיBabylon,בָבֶלand they were givenוִיהִיבוּto one namedלְ שְׁמֵהּSheshbazzar,שֵׁשְׁבַּצַּרwhomדִּיhe had madeשָׂמֵהּgovernor.פֶחָה
And he saidוַאֲמַרto him,לֵהּ“Theseאֵלutensils:מָאנַיָּאtake them,שֵׂאgo,אֵזֶלdepositאֲחֵתthemהִמּוֹin the templeבְּהֵיכְלָאthatדִּיis in Jerusalem,בִירוּשְׁלֶםand let the houseוּבֵיתof Elahאֱלָהָאbe builtיִתְבְּנֵאon its site.”עַל אַתְרֵהּ
ThenאֱדַיִןthatדֵּךְSheshbazzarשֵׁשְׁבַּצַּרcameאֲתָאand laidיְהַבthe foundationsאֻשַּׁיָּאof the houseדִּי בֵיתof Elahאֱלָהָאwhichדִּיis in Jerusalem;בִירוּשְׁלֶםand fromוּמִןthenאֱדַיִןuntilוְעַדnowכְּעַןit has been under construction,מִתְבְּנֵאand it is notוְלָאcomplete.’שְׁלִם
And now,וּכְעַןifהֵןto the kingעַל מַלְכָּאit seems good,טָבlet it be investigatedיִתְבַּקַּרin the houseבְּבֵיתof the treasuresגִּנְזַיָּאof the kingדִּי מַלְכָּאthereתַמָּהinדִּי בְּBabylon,בָבֶלwhetherהֵןit is soאִיתַיthatדִּיbyמִןCyrusכּוֹרֶשׁthe kingמַלְכָּאan orderטְעֵםwas givenשִׂיםto buildלְמִבְנֵאthatדֵךְhouseבֵּיתof Elahאֱלָהָאin Jerusalem;בִּירוּשְׁלֶםand letוּthe willרְעוּתof the kingמַלְכָּאconcerningעַלthisדְּנָהbe sentיִשְׁלַחto us.”עֲלֶינָא
